The majority of society does not believe it is okay to attack someone due to race, religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation etc. Thus laws are passed to dissuade this from happening.

msm318. Hate crimes legislation is not discriminatory. We take intent into account in many crimes. Run a person over with your car on purpose and it's murder. By mistake, it's no crime, or vehicular manslaughter at worst. Hate crimes leg. is the same. The intent to harm because of race, etc. ratchets up the punishment, exactly the way intent to run over the person ratchets up the penalty.

msm318 - Let me clarify my point - when you select a victim because of his race, gender,etc., the INTENT of the crime becomes to intimidate and repress an entire class of people. You no longer have just one victim. A lynching in the old south had one physical victim - but an entire community was really the victim because it sent a message of intimidation to them - "Stay in your place.
