This tour was THE tour for me. Neil's drums went from "pretty in pink" (HYF tour), to this badass purple, but were still Ludwigs. They were getting airplay. And, there were the BUNNY'S on this tour. The bunny's literally rocked. It was so cool. I was in college during this time of no youtube and we would have had to pay big money for a copy of this! Yes, people sold boots back then..... Amazing piece of history here.
Man, I totally forgot how utterly unique Geddy's black Wal bass sounded during the early 90's. It had super thin strings and active pick-ups and sounded like no other bass in the world. Amazing!
@SuperMrMalibog if Guns and roses had 1/10th the talent rush has, they would still be a band, instead, that loser axel rose is a strung out coke head.
Alex is not just noodling, setting up a delay could be a real pain in the ass, even at home with a stomp box delay, it needs fine tweaks to get it right, and Alex here is setting his rack delay which is about 10 times more complex. those things are like computers without the GUI.
to the person who asked about neils previous drumsets.... several were auctioned off for charity, some were given to school musical depts as odds and ends.. thats neils way of giving back
@TheWitchOvAgnesi it really doesnt have anything to do with warming up or rehearsal..The soundcheck is for the sound-engineer to mix the proper sound in evry arena `cos they are all different.. Geddy,Neil and Alex warm up an hour b4 the show backstage anyway.
I was at the show that night. They kicked major ass. (As usual)
As a guitarist/gearhead, it's cool to watch Alex tweak his system. The black tarped box behind his amps are home to the 20 ft inflatable bunnies they used when they played "Presto". They had them dancing alone to the beat of the song. Hilarious...
Presto was the tour where they began to get back to their heavier roots and started diggin out 70's epics, like Xanadu and By-Tor ...
This video is priceless. Never saw Alex noodling around with effects in a non-live setting or Geddy sing Subdivisions like that. Nice start to my day..
At 1:00 sounds like Geddy was either saying a verse of "Thriller" or Maidens Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner? I saw Tony G in there carrying a keyboard! Neil and his tech were just dying to play frisbee with that splash! lol
God Alex takes forever programming his sounds. He's like me! I think the crew finally got impatient and moved his pedalboard so they could continue working on the stage lol
@ShyNirvanaDemon I guess everyone is different at their upper levels of rock stardom. I did a tour as a tech touring alongside Steve Vai for his 1996 Fire Garden tour. There was no arbitrary moving of anything of his, not even for us, the opening act that played all the same shows, and who shared one Mike Keneally who played in both bands. Rush seem to be some rather kind fellows, and have a good rapport with their longtime crew, but usually headliners don't just get out of the way for openers.
Alex really had it out for his echo set-up there! never realized he laid echo down like that on the Xanadu intro, not sure if that's on the studio version, or at least not that much but it sounded good, i'll have to try that!
damn, wish they would just let us hardcore fans into the soundchecks, charge us $10 and give it to charity or something! i've heard several from outside ampitheaters but would love to be inside watching!
"Back in the day" as in the late-'80s & early '90s in my late teens/early 20s, afternoons of big rock shows at the Hampton Colisuem in Va, I'd dress up in nice dress slacks (or my best Miami Vice outfits) and drive around the back of the venue in one of my dad's nicest cars (BMW, etc) by the tour busses and just walk in the back door next to where load-in was going on. I'd walk STRAIGHT to the payphone by the stage ramp/right and fake a phone call until I was comfortable nobody was watching...
(cont'd)...then walk around the venue faking confidence as if I was supposed to be there. If roadies got suspicious, I'd keep looking at my watch and then look at the exits as if waiting for someone to meet me. When actaul soundchecks started, all the attention was always on the band members and sound, and I'd wait til it was over then go outside and hang out for a few minutes and try to catch band members coming out. Then I'd go home, nap, meet up with friends, get drunk, & see the show!
This is amazing on so many levels. Look at how particular Neil and listen to how amazing Geddy's voice sounds in the check alone...
Thanks AGAIN Femurs! How do you get these videos? Do you just duct tape yourself to Rush's tour bus and refuse to leave the stadium/arena until you get a video for your minions like us that NEED to see these videos? You are da man Femurs!
I'm gonna grab my Signals CD & give it a crank. Thanks for posting this wonderful video. Even in soundcheck, Rush sounds far better than most of what passes for "music" nowadays!
Now this is a lot more interesting, seeing them checking out their instruments, looking to get the right sounds... good pull, wherever you got it from, RTF.
haha great video man!!!you arn't secretly alex's guitar tech are you,as it would explain how you manage to put all of these awesome rush vids on youtube;-)peace!!!
shows how hard it is to set a delay!!!!!

@primarybs I remember Geddy breaking a string on his Wal during this tour in Baltimore. I didn't think such a thing was possible.
