May be the structural damage/weakness in this version can be explained by the wood structure of the Mosquito, less strong than metal seen in its german counterpart, the Me-410 Hornisse. While the Mosquito did suffer structural damage with the 57mm cannon, the german plane had a bomber killer version, the Me-410 B2U4, armed with a 50mm canon(25 rds),2 30mm, 2 20mm, 2 13,1mm guns firing ahead, 2 to rear defence and 4 210 mm rockets, what is more than 3 times the offensive power of Tse-tse Mossie.
@LeoAndRas The whole reason the Mosquito was built was because of it's wood design It saved metal for production of other aircraft And alliled countries like mine Produced many of them To the amazment of the pilots The mossy took damage some times better then the Avg plane The wood took holes were metal panels would of been torn off As for the Me-410 The the loss of the Goldschmitt Tego-Film factory Meant The glue needed for the 410 was lossed and other glues failed on 90% of the 1,000 planes
You´re making a mistake, because the german plane built in wood wasn't the Me-410 Hornisse, but the Focke-Wulf Ta-154, called by Goebbels "The German Mosquito". Was this plane that had its development, production and service life broken by the bombing of Tego-Film glue factory. I said that the german plane in service that was more closer of Mosquito performance was the Hornisse. Even in design, and in much points the Me-410 really was much alike. Compare the Me-410 and Mossie designs.
@LeoAndRas Maybe you then need to read up what your talking about I'm not mistaking anything The ME-410D = also replaced portions of the outer wing panels with ones made of wood to conserve strategic materials. Several were built, but like many other attempts at wood construction with Poor glue These planes fell a part some times in mid air There fore your comment about the Mosquito was stronger then the 410 It never fell apart while flying
I already know that was tried to make parts of Hornisse in wood, but the german plane that was since the beginning built in wood,in Mosquito class wasn't the Me-410,but the Focke-Wulf Ta-154. The glue produced in Tego-Film factory was much more useful to Ta-154 than to the Hornisse and Me-109,that also had parts built in wood to save wieight and strategic materials. Look, one thing is a plane, the Hornisse, with some parts in wood, and another completely different was the Ta-154,all built in wood.
@LeoAndRas Aillies bombed the Tego film factory to the ground The Ta-154 was useless thus why i never talked about There's no comparing it to the Mossy same go's for the Hornisse The makers of this plane tried to save it from being scraped aswell thus why there where making parts from wood saving metal..That failed and the Hornisse was scraped to make way for much needed 109's and 190's Count how many were many compared to the 109 or 190 or light german bombers
@LeoAndRas Your whole point of the Hornisse VS Mosquito fails ..A mossy could out run a spitfire by 20 mph and the first ones made never had guns at all ..They never needed them They could carry 4,000lbs bombs Fly 100 ft from the ground Carry rockets, bombs 30mm cannon, Radar, Camaras, And land on a aircraft carrier This plane could do what most could not do Your hornisse top speed was 388 mph 45 Mph slower then the mossy never seen a flight deck take off or carried a 4,000 lbs bomb
Much specialists compare Hornisse with Mosquito in terms of lenght, wingspan, weight, bombload, engine power and range. You're talking about the Hornisse be slower than the Mosquito, but in much books is said that in normal circunstances the speeds of both was very similar,as in the other points that I said. So,with similar weights, engines power higher in Hornisse B2,1900hp against 1710 hp in Mossie MK 30, how Mosquito could be so more faster as you said ?
@LeoAndRas The originally planned 1,900 hp (1,400 kW) DB 603G engine was cancelled in early 1944, so all Me 410Bs used DB 603A or DB 603AA engines Which were 1730Hp - The Mossy NF MK 30 "Nightfighter" Never had Bomb loads or a 30mm cannon to weight it down Radar and 6 front machine guns in a light wooden airframe would still out match a Heavier 410. 85 Squadron flying a Mosquito XII on a night interception patrol shot down a Me 410 The first one of the war 2 more were shot down that week by moss
With engines having almost the same power, you should look less the material that was built the planes, and more to the maximum operational weight of each plane. What matters the construction material - wood to the Mosquito and metal to Hornisse - if each one took off with same weight and power ? You say that Mossie were lighter than Hornisse, but seems to forget what was the take off weight to each one. If were near the same the performance would be very closer.
@freakyflow Not sure where you're getting your 6 machine guns from. The early (NF II) ones had the "standard" Mosquito armament of 4X.303 machine guns and 4X20 mm cannon. The later NF 19 with the bigger radar dish in the "bullnose" had just the 4X20 mm cannon. This version was by far the best night fighter of the war bar none. It had the longest range, the best radar, the highest speed, a highly effective armament and better manouverbility due to not having to carry external big radar aerials.
@PenzancePete your right night fighter variants: armament consisted of four 20 mm Hispano cannon and four .303 in (7.7 mm) Browning machine guns Which were built in my city in Canada I was thinking the B-25 mitchell with 6 50 Cal. in the nose like the one on display here ..many of the radar mossys were also from Canada due to having the American Radar installed in them
@LeoAndRas ME-410 Max load at take off 24,700Lbs Mosquito 25,000Lbs So if the 410 had more power why cound it only take off at max 24,700? The mossy was lighter and used better octane then Germany had Oil production factories in German were rare The result was Sync, Octane Add supercharges to this ..also your looking at a plane that was in the air 3 years before the 410. There's a mossy air worthy flying this year in Canada only 1 in the world

Just read somthing about this gun , the Tetsi version, apparently it only has 1 recorded sinking of a U boat to its kill claim.
It was more sucessful against shipping, but the recoil caused structural damage so
rockets become a better option.
