One of the most magical times in amateur sports history, the 1980 Olympics..the Men's USA Hockey Team...sweet gawd, thoese mop-topped college kids, with no chance, were up against the mighty Russians...there was no chance for a medal, let alone beating the mighty meat-hooks for fore-arms Reds, but somehow, our lads did it, with style, grace & craic shit balls-out playin' & scrappin'...was one of the finest events I ever witnessed as a 21-year old lass, with me family...finer than fine! tbc!

americans do play hockey 350,000 players compared to Canadas 450,000. pretty close, and way more than russias 80,000. so only a handful of international medals in 60 yrs is pretty sad for usa hockey

I saw that russian team later in a game against Germany. Don't let them fool you, they were the best of the best. But Thank you God in Heaven, our boys beat their asses that day.

Canada plays both and sucks at both.. We also dominate basketball, boxing, mma, golf, wrestling, swimming, there really aren't that many other major sports.. Ya and steve nash is the only good canadian basketball player the rest are a joke.

americans do play hockey 350,000 players compared to Canadas 450,000. pretty close, and way more than russias 80,000. so only a handful of international medals in 60 yrs is pretty sad for usa hockey

Thats another made up stat LOL. Every guy in Canada plays hockey at one point in their lives.. I would say 1 in every 40 americans plays hockey.. I don't care Which country has more people. Most states have hardly any hockey at all except for, MA, Mn and Mi and maybe NY.

Maybe because they play other sports like Baseball and Basketball. Canada don't really play those sports.
I think population size does count for something. But more importantly economics seeing as Ice Hockey is a very very expensive sport to get into especially at an early age where you need to start.

@86Bruins MA, ME, NH, VT, NY, OH, MI, WI, MN, ND, CO all have the perennial college teams (BC, BU, U of Maine, U of Vermont, Cornell, Miami U of Ohio, Michigan, Michigan State, U of Wisconsin, U of Minnesota, U of North Dakota, Denver College, Colorado College, USAFA. And I'm sure I missed quite a few schools not in those states aforementioned.

I watched this live as a sophomore in high school. We were in the dumps, bad economy, expensive gas, no jobs, Russians invaded Afghanistan, Sandanistas took over Nicaragua, Ayatollah took over Iran, and this was after Reagan took over and got the hostages back, we got our pride back. I remember when they won, I ran outside and was jumping up and down, it was snowing with nobody home from work, but i didnt care.

Ya know, all the hating on each others countries is superfluous. Just appreciate what the USA did in this game, its perhaps the greatest sporting event and accomplishment in history. Given the odds and the team they were up against. These were PROFESSIONAL Russian players, playing COLLEGE KIDS at that time, and they LOST! Add to it all the socilo/political environment in those years, and this adds up to a fight between good and evil. It was and still is, an AMAZING defeat at the hands of kids.
