last comment a year ago, this needs to be advertised so others can feel and shear in it. just one beggar telling others were food can be found!!!!!!!!!!!!!! this cut threw the world to the heart and bleeds others pain so we know we are not alone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and Mary is a gift from the intelligent maker!!!!!!!
Great interpretation. Well done. So expressive. I bought a cassette of Mary Black music a few years ago. It had a sticker on it with a quotation from Sean Connery saying "Surely this is the voice of God."
Sorry for being maudlin but this song got me through some tough times and for that alone I'll always be grateful. The fact that I can now listen to it and remember the better times is testament to the singer and the songwriter, bravo. Nothing can trigger the memory quite like a song :-)
her control over her voice is amazing her voice is so natural nt forced at'll she just unbelievable amazing id listen to her all day evryday this is music the is a singer ive never heard anyone sing live as amazing as her not whitney nor maria is that good shes out of there league mary is a true perform true singer shea an insperation to me im 20 and think shes incredible!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!xX
It's been more than 15 years since an Irish friend of mine introduced me to Mary Black -- and in particular to this song. It's been nearly that long since I've heard it and I was so pleased to find it here. Thanks, stillhardlife
i much prefer marys version to nancy griffiths who has an irritating edgy voice , Mary Black expresses the song beautifully without offending my ears.
This is a favourite song of mine and believe me the innocent vocal delivery of Nanci Griffith brings the song to life and cannot be bettered - even by the most accomplished singer. Sometimes the definitive version of a great song (albeit quite simple) smacks you in the face, and I still wear Nanci's bruises proudly.
I agree. I saw Nanci Griffith in concert about 20 years ago, and it was an absolutely thrilling experience. Yes, sometimes her voice gets harsh, but there's something she puts into her singing that really grabs me. And this is perhaps my favorite song that she does.
Yeh, seasoned performance and great diction. I rate this pretty highly because when you've left the site, you're humming it for days and it makes you want to go out and replicate the moment. Compares very favourable with the Naci Griffith. I like the backing too. There's always a danger you can over cook a song like this but the balance was all there.
take my breath away u are so lucky to make us feel like this thanks

@kierabyrne09 I love Mary Black 2, but dont u think her voice is styled and sometimes too much verbrato to the detriment of the melody?

Mary Blacks version is 100 times better than Nanci Griffiths! Love it, defo a favourite

I have to disagree with you on that. Mary's performance is perfect, and so is Nanci's. There many, many variations of perfection.

Her finest moment in my humble opinion.

I must agree with res57 to a degree. Mary does it nicely, but the Nanci Griffith version really can't be beat. Still nice though!

Well, technically it is a Pat Alger song and Mary acquits herself quite well thank you very much.
