  • Many Thanks! GREAT VIDEO. I have an 2002 with 294,000 miles. The engine and TCS came on at about 175,000 miles. Took to two separate Honda Dealers both told me the valves needed to be adjusted (engine codes telling them adjust them-1 dealer told me they had never adjust them on that motor before ). Still wouldn't guarantee me the lights would go off after the $600.00 to do it. So I passed. Like other commenters mine was 100% clogged and all the holes were clogged as well. LIGHTS GONE! THX!

  • I've had very little problems with my 2002. The EGR thing is "normal" and just like replacing timing belts every 100,000 miles you can expect to need to do it. I've got 260,000 miles on mine and it's going strong. Starting to leak a bit of power steering fluid around the hoses and pump but I just watch the level. The only other thing is that the sliding passenger door bushings will eventually wear and need replacing. I'll buy another odyssey when/if this one ever dies.

  • Thanks so much for posting this. I have an '03 with a check engine light on and this has to be what the issue is. Also, THANK YOU big time for explaining that the '02 had the improved access to the manifold, because I was watching the other videos thinking I didn't want to bother pulling all the hoses and screws out. I am NOT a handyman/mechanic, but this looks like something I can easily handle.

  • I can not thank you enough! I was thinking I needed to remove the manifold and pleased when I spent a little more time researching and found your video. I have a 2002 odyssey and it would have been a mistake to remove the manifold as your video points out. I did the procedure that you recommend and it worked perfectly! The van is running great! I really appreciate you taking the time to post this and save me lots of money. THANK YOU!!! I will definitely pay it forward.

  • This was an awesome video! Very detailed, explicit, and accurate. Thank you so much for posting. My '02 Ody with 108K was exactly as you described and I used your exact method to clean it. I'm a good tinkerer, but truly not a mechanic, and this operation took me exactly 1 hour start to finish with no glitches and flawless results.

  • Thanks so much for the detail instructions. Just did mine today, will check the gas mileage to see if it makes a difference. In any case, I need to do it since my 03 Ody got 120K already and it looks exactly what's in the video

  • What a great video. My 2002 was 99.9999% blocked in holes and air ways as shown on this video. Spent a total of 45 minutes to complete and saved at least 3-400 dollars in garage. Thanks so much!!!!!

  • @mrzscience ...I totally agree. This video helped me in seeing what is under the cover & what to look for.  The replacement cover & gasket cost me no more than $20 and well worth it. I just took the cover off today & ALL six ports were heavily caked up with carbon. And the cover was nasty. I am glad I just got a replacement cover vs using elbow grease to clean the existing cover.

  • I want to do the same for my van. Instead of cleaning the upper intake manifold cover like you did, I am going to replace the cover with a new one.

    What I wanted to find out was did you need to disconnect any cables or hoses before pulling off the cover? Are there additional steps other that just unscrewing all ten bolts that I need to do so that I don't hurt myself or damage the engine?

    Thanks. Any information you can give me will be greatly appreciated.

  • @ahaolelo It was a while ago but as I recall there weren't any hoses or cables. We just removed the top cover. I wonder what the cover costs? Cleaning wasn't all that hard. Just takes a can of carb cleaner and patience ;-)

  • @iPhoneCzar ....Thank you. I got a cover online for $15.00. I think this is well worth it because I can only guess how much carbon is built up on my cover. I will still go ahead & get the carb cleaner for the port that is on the manifold itself. I am also going to change out the EGR valve at the same time. Now that was kinda expensive at $110.00. Much appreciated the video.

  • Do you think it would be a good idea to use carb cleaner and a pressure washer to clean the buildup on the underside of the cover?

  • @redlense4 I think that would be fine although we found the carbon so "caked" that we had to scrape it loose with a screwdriver. I didn't think of soaking it in Carb Cleaner and then pressure washing it but that might have worked if your pressure washer can do at least 2500 PSI (g). I don't think those wimpy electric ones would have enough moxie but in the end it either cleans or doesn't so couldn't hurt to try.

  • What were the symptoms that made you attack the EGR?

  • @tillman40 The Check Engine Light came on and the code translated to "Insufficient EGR flow" or something similar on my code reader.

  • How quickly can this job be done? 2 Hours?

  • @exclusivebuyersagent Disassembly and assembly probably take 15 minutes each. The cover containing the EGR channels to be cleaned is right on top and easy to remove. Remainder of time depends on how much carbon there is to remove but if I'd had this video I'd say it would have taken no more than an hour tops (30 minutes worth of carbon scavenging) for the whole job.
