there could be iron based life on mars (we are carbon based)
we NEED to colonize another planet! the moon isnt a very suitable place for human life, but mars definitely is. if a big enough asteroid hits earth, the human race could become extinct. but if we colonize mars, we would stand a chance.
I didn't say Mars wouldn't be hit by an asteroid. I'm just saying, if we did colonize Mars, and one of the planets, Mars or Earth, gets hit by an asteroid, we still have a second chance for mankind because we colonized two planets. It's very unlikely that an asteroid will hit Mars and Earth in a time span of 100, or even 1,000 years.
Why would anyone care if the species survives?? I'm speaking from a scientific point of view. The care of species survival is an instinct and therefore insignificant when it comes to science.
Actually there is a near earth asteroid which is capable of a planet-wide mass extinction. Though, it's said that if it is going to hit, it'll be at least 800 years from now.
our travels to mars are the next step. we're stagnating here, finding reasons to fight and consume. we could be exploring if we started another space race
We need to fucking GO there, C'mon humans get a move on... Jeez!
Fuck Iraq, Conquer Mars!
For all our sakes we need a seperate human society on another planet that can function independently, incase we fuck this planet up any more than we have and all go bye-bye.
I realize how old that comment is but it's too stupid not to reply too...
First off, we don't have the power to bring humans there, if we did, we would be there already instead of just sending rovers. Second, how the hell would we get a separate human society there? There's no air and suits are expensive, there's no food and eventually we would run out, and finally it's FROZEN.
I respectfully disagree, do some research, you'll see that colonizing places we aint suppose to be is in our nature.
We'll adapt, have some faith in humanities ability to overcome diversity. It requires political incentive to explore space manualy, were to busy fighting fictitious wars of bullshit.
We teraform, if you'd look at the chemical composition of Mars you'll see its too cold and the atmosphear is to thin, BOTH can be changed to our favour. We do it here on Earth with Global warming.
True, but still, think about how long it took for Global warming on Earth, long time. Just think about it in space where it's probably 10x colder. It could be too late. Also, think about how it has the potential to kill us on Earth, so if we use it to our advantage by the time it will be ready it could be dangerous. And once again I bring up oxygen, it's limited and plants can't be grown as they need CO2 and we're a source for that, but we need air so we use the suits which block out the CO2.
The chemical composition of the Martian atmosphear is CO2, the only factor is temperature, you raise this by increasing Mars' ability (because of its inability), to trap the Suns heat, as we know greenhouse gases are sublime at this. temperate weather (artificialy induced) + CO2 + metabolizing organisms = Oxygen! It may take a few hundred years but thats an eye blink in geological terms. And a component of Water is?
1) We do have the power to get there; it's the getting back that's the issue.
2) That would depend on the size of the society. We would have to build an enclosed habitat and grow food from seed.
3) There are places on earth that are frozen year-round in which people still manage to live.
That said, I think colonizing Mars would be a major PITA. I think we'd better off trying to come up with a way to teraform Venus, since it's almost the same size as Earth.
I doubt Venus would be easier, but we should be giving it more attention than we have in modern history. The planet is very much alive and is the closest living planet to us. There is a lot that we could learn.
Yes. I'm not saying it would be easier. I'm just saying that Venus has already proven that it has enough gravity to hold on to an atmosphere; unlike Mars where the atmosphere it too thin to breathe. It makes more sense to me to invent a way to convert the Venutian atmosphere into one which would support human life, rather than live in bubbles on Mars.
Well, are we looking for a way to terraform or colonize Venus? Just colonizing it would be a lot easier, but it would be the same bubble scenario as Mars. Anyway, it's really hard to compare these two because they are at the opposite ends of the spectrum. I see the greatest issue with Mars being the acquisition of the needed resources. Venus would be the construction of a massive infrastructure around the planet. Either way SSP looks like it will be the first step.
Mars would be easier to colonize if you're going with the bubble method. Venus currently has a surface temp of ~900°F, rains sulphuric acid, and has an atmospheric pressure roughly equivalent to being under the sea on Earth. Long-term, terraforming Venus makes more sense because of its size and the fact that it can actually hold an atmosphere.
SSP is an acronym with which I am unfamiliar. Enlighten me, please?
I didn't mean the colonization would be exactly the same. It would have to be in the atmosphere. Either way you end up in a bubble.
Solar Space Power or Space-based Solar Power (SBSP). The technology needed to do anything with either planet falls in line with that that we would need to develop to create a workable SSP array. It is believed that by taking on this project we will begin a fundamental transition to being a true space fairing race.
Right, right. I got what you meant. I'm just saying if we can figure out how to fix Venus, we'd have a whole new Earth-like planet to live on, out in the open. No bubbles. Granted, it might be a 100+ year process, but well worth it in the end.
Ah, ok. Yes, that makes complete sense. I think we'd be doing a heck of a lot more solar on Earth right now if it weren't for the oil lobbyists. I'm working on saving enough cash to panel my roof. A lot of potential up there.
Colonizing Venys. Why would someone go to all that trouble? Its a deadly gaseous world, but all the same if we could cool down the surface of Venus--it might be possible. I only wish the orbit of Venus would be closer to us. It could be made into a 2nd Earth, but needs a dramatic makeover.
I didn't say it would be easy :-) The reason though, is the size. It's roughly the same size as earth, with roughly the same gravity. The other bonus is that it can obviously hold atmosphere, where mars is debatable.
If we could condense the venusian atmosphere back into liquid water, the surface temp would drop to habitable. It's the thick greenhouse gasses that are making it so hot.
Oh okay, But it's the atmosphere that keeps it so hot, I watched another YT video saying that Earth was also inhabitable then it rained for years in a row or something, Maybe venus has to do that.
@D34dFilms just need to shake a large volume of space centred at the sun, like when you shake a funnel containing a marble and the marble's orbit increases, sure we be able to do that in a couple of years
Right. It's wayyyy to hot. Now. But with all of that atmosphere creating all of that heat, there is potentially a second earth-like planet there, just waiting to have the atmospheric gases condensed back into liquid water and breathable air. It would take technology that we don't currently have, but it would be well worth it in the end.
that was just what i said. but i could add grossly out of proportion relative the the earths atmosphere. but look at the animation that chute is way to small to do any good
or we could NUKE the planets ice caps make the planet flood itself and grow trees and plants and weird ugly ass animals and stuff and move in, but WHAT IF, the trees dont grow they way they do here...they might not be green or have bark hell the bark part could be the branches and the tree part (leaves and stuff) could be bark for all we know, easier to eat the leaves when were hungry lol, or it might be...Iron like metal Iron that pops out thats how Alien it could be and thats how stupid we are
HMGen14.. what the HELL are you talking about? lol..
the same species would grow just the same in different locations.. they aren't going to suddenly stop using chlorophyll and create some new way of obtaining energy.. :P
(it DEFINITELY won't be made out of or start producing iron.. ;P~)
"and thats how stupid we are"
that statement did not even remotely logically follow ANY of the statements in the preceding paragraph. i repeat, what the HELL are you talking about? =P
could it also be possible that all the crap we've sent to mars was carrying some form of methane producing bacteria and since these multiple landings has become so numerous that it now produces vast quantities of methane?
the methane there is being recycled over and over again so what ever is producing it is using it and it has been that way for a long time im not tlaking 50 years either
why waste time on a barren rock when we could be looking for more powerful compunds to fuel ships, which in turn we could find a planet that IS already inhabitable...
seriously? think about the kind of stuff on that planet... there could be more radioactive elements to use as fuel, or there might be other species close or even smarter than us...

haha i like how u phrase the question "do shit on that planet" lol. if ur talking about human exploration missions..thats not til a while..cuz we first need to design a suitable spacecraft, next the problem is the fuel, then the next problem is the cosmic rays which are very harmful to the skin, then the problem is prolonged exposure to zero gravity which can decrease bone density if ur in space too long..and a voyage to mars will take like a couple of months to a year.
lastly thers the issue of psychological effects, it may seem irrelevant but the lack of gravity can have psychological effects, so yea as u can see theres a lot of issues that need to be addressed..id say in the next few decades 20-30 years we might see the first exploration mission.
How do you think any life from mars could affect beings from earth at all if you constider that those are two totally diferent evolutionarry trees undependant on each other.
The only way the life on mars could be dangerous to us is with long time interactions with us.
And because of that the chance for a dangerous virus for us to appear is the same as if a virus on earth mutates to vipe us out.

And behold,a lot of rocks appeared.
The Lord created the microbes after his image.
"Thou shalt eat dirt and fart methane."

crazy, if theres water does it mean we can eventually do shit on that planet?
Slik2015 3 years ago
haha i like how u phrase the question "do shit on that planet" lol. if ur talking about human exploration missions..thats not til a while..cuz we first need to design a suitable spacecraft, next the problem is the fuel, then the next problem is the cosmic rays which are very harmful to the skin, then the problem is prolonged exposure to zero gravity which can decrease bone density if ur in space too long..and a voyage to mars will take like a couple of months to a year.

lastly thers the issue of psychological effects, it may seem irrelevant but the lack of gravity can have psychological effects, so yea as u can see theres a lot of issues that need to be addressed..id say in the next few decades 20-30 years we might see the first exploration mission.

responce to sarimakbar. The ISS crew uses weight training to keep the bones just fine.

if they do find something on mars, i hope its like not a virus that wipes out earth lolz
DisturbedSoul360 3 years ago
How do you think any life from mars could affect beings from earth at all if you constider that those are two totally diferent evolutionarry trees undependant on each other.
The only way the life on mars could be dangerous to us is with long time interactions with us.
And because of that the chance for a dangerous virus for us to appear is the same as if a virus on earth mutates to vipe us out.

Life doesn't have to carbon and water based. I'm hoping that mars has some non carbon and water based life, just to make things interesting.
