By conflicting identities I mean British and Irish, "settler" and "native", Nationalist and Unionist- national and political identities, not religious affiliations. Sectarian differences have acquired their significance only as a result of their correlation with the national identities

@vicbakerboy We don't need to be atheists. I myself am a agnostic but at the same time have very anti-religious beliefs. Without religion, we'd have good people doing good things, and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.

Creation of Northern Ireland broke no laws at the time, Nor does it's existence currently violate any known international laws or treaties. Indeed, the only know legal objections (Articles 2, 3 of the Republic of ireland's constitution) Were repealed as a political expediency to satisfy a few ranting unionist MPs which to me, shows they weren't worth the paper they were written on. Ireland had it's chance to unify in WW2 and chose to remain neutral, while courting Nazi Germany. Dry your eyes.

All I say is I thought the book was fantastic and the film looks amazing a real look into the time of when it was all kicking off in Northern Ireland in the eighties, it shows the strains and struggles from both apposing sides whether you are fore or against the actions of the IRA or the British government, it just proves nothing good comes from violence nor greed. A great true story, by a brave man.
