I am obese and have lost 20kgs so far. I have worked my ass off to save up just to see a bit of the world before I die. I never travel on public transport and am spending more money trying to eat healthy. It is expensive and so is purchasing two seats. My flight alone cost $2000 for one seat and I'm petrified of someone like these people, ridiculing me about my weight. We go without so much already and have to work twice as hard to do everything, not to mention having witnesses to it all.

Really To make the seating on airplanes almost twice/three times smaller so we can get more people onto the plane and into the air is also a risk! The factors of the weight of the plane, the weight of the cargo, and the weight of the total people on the plane should be taken into consideration as well. I had to fly Southwest, and I was stuck between two fat ppl, omfg, it was ridiculous, so I have an idea, make a fat person section on the aircraft, and strategically have it set toward the middle of the aircraft to counterweight the aircraft from tipping. Fucking fat people, loose some weight, fat people are not meant to fly, btw, this comment is not aimed at ppl with glandular disorders such as thyroid or other medical conditions, only those who are truly gluttonous and lazy. Southwest is a charter flight which mean they don't have first or business class, only coach. In my opinion,If passenger feel uncomfortable in coach seat on Southwest, he/she can flight other airline with first and business class with wider seat and more food in service compare to coach class. While it is wrong for larger people to "blame airlines" like everyone thinks they're doing, they're justified in believing that they're being discriminated against, that people make fun of them, & that it is utterly demeaning to be asked to get off a plane. I've never had any of this happen to me but even if I were beside someone huge, I would stick it out because they paid just like I did to get where they're going. If it's really bad, ask a flight attendant if you can move. Not that hard.
There are SO many things to think of when addressing this. People are saying, "If fat people have $ for fast food, they have $ for seats." That in itself is a stupid, fallacious, illogical assumption. We have no idea of the larger person's background. They could have a thyroid disease & not have insurance to have it properly treated. And if it was just plain body odor it wouldn't be bad. I have similar complaint with smokers clothing, they to smell disgusting. On the other hand in tight quarters for prolong time fat people sweat and smell quickly. Example, as a commuter flights are long enough for it to progress.
Im a US size 4 so I have plenty of room on airplane seats. But seeing as though I paid for a seat I should be able to use all of it and not have to sit in an uncomfortable position because the person beside me is so fat they are taking up part of my seat. not fair at all. obese people should know that they are going to take up more than one seat and book their seats accordingly. They have enough money to spend on too much food so they surely have enough to spend on an extra seat.

What they should do, is take a row w/three seats... yank 'em out and replace them w/two larger seats. Divide the total cost for the three seats into 2 - charge more for a larger seat. So, say each seat is 100 dollars (for a three row seat), yank the three out, put in the two, and charge 150 dollars for one of the two seats. Problem solved.

I'm just a kid, but on my first trip out of the U.S. I went to England via Iceland AIr. The seats were made of high quality leather (I flew economy, and I think they bumped me up to economy premium or something on the way from Iceland to England). Even though i'm just 13, but I was around the average height of an American. The seats were fine for me, and i'm not stick thin. I got sick on the way there, and It was embarrassing... But they were very nice. Maybe you just went on a bad airline...

I have a great idea! I just made a flight from Seattle to Houston and sat next to a person who was oozing right out of their seat and into mine.... took the whole arm rest and 1/4 of my leg room. Since I paid for a whole seat and didn't get one, they should refund me a portion of my ticket since they took up their seat plus about 1/5 of mine! I fit just fine into those seats as long as I have a whole seat to sit in. Regardless of why they were overweight, they still took up part of my seat.

I am 5'10'' and dont have any problems with weight, but I do have problems flying in coach, cause I have no space for my legs to fit between the seats. I fly often and my flights take generally more than 5 hours, so you can imagine how fun they are. I always try to get a seat in an aisle to be able to stretch the legs. I think it would be nice of airlines or plane manufacturers to think about comfort of passengers (considering how much we pay for a plane ticket) for once and not about profit.

The bucket seats in my car hurt my back & many mass transit seats are not made for the average sized man.

In your scenario, my point is patronize stores/businesses that cater to your needs. Don't think every business should cater to everyone's needs. That's just not realistic. @brrtown I agree with you about people who are just plain obese, but there are other factors- What about the guy who is 6'7" , with broad hips and shoulders to match? I mean a guy (or woman) who is just genetically large, not at all fat. Despite being under 6 feet, I have shoulders which are unusually broad, and I am rarely comfortable in any airline seat. I am only very slightly over the proper weight for my height, and most of that is because of muscle. The seats need to be bigger.
Unfortunately, everything isn't for everybody. People forget that a business has a target market. If you're not the target then you'd have to find a business where you are the target. It's a painful truth. And, if that target market has needs that aren't being met, then that person should look into creating a new business. That's what an economy is....supply and demand or demand and supply.

I have over a quart of a million flight miles with united. It sucks to have somebody's side fat laying against you for 14.5 hours from sf to hong kong. You pay for a certain am mount of room on board, and you should get that room, its not fair for one person to take up his seat plus part on each side.

While it is wrong for larger people to "blame airlines" like everyone thinks they're doing, they're justified in believing that they're being discriminated against, that people make fun of them, & that it is utterly demeaning to be asked to get off a plane. I've never had any of this happen to me but even if I were beside someone huge, I would stick it out because they paid just like I did to get where they're going. If it's really bad, ask a flight attendant if you can move. Not that hard.

There are SO many things to think of when addressing this. People are saying, "If fat people have $ for fast food, they have $ for seats." That in itself is a stupid, fallacious, illogical assumption. We have no idea of the larger person's background. They could have a thyroid disease & not have insurance to have it properly treated. They could come from a family of big people. They could be unemployed, surviving on crappy cheap food. Nobody is pulling into account these possible scenarios.

First, when I was in school there was 1 maybe 2 fat kids in class. Now 1/3 of them are porkers. Second they spend plenty of money on fast food.Why can't them spend money for 1st class seats? That is true. I don't mean the retard thing either. Some over weight people do make an extra effort to ensure they are clean. Unfortunately most of them don't. And if it was just plain body odor it wouldn't be bad. I have similar complaint with smokers clothing, they to smell disgusting. On the other hand in tight quarters for prolong time fat people sweat and smell quickly. Example, as a commuter flights are long enough for it to progress.

Im a US size 4 so I have plenty of room on airplane seats. But seeing as though I paid for a seat I should be able to use all of it and not have to sit in an uncomfortable position because the person beside me is so fat they are taking up part of my seat. not fair at all. obese people should know that they are going to take up more than one seat and book their seats accordingly. They have enough money to spend on too much food so they surely have enough to spend on an extra seat.

What they should do, is take a row w/three seats... yank 'em out and replace them w/two larger seats. Divide the total cost for the three seats into 2 - charge more for a larger seat. So, say each seat is 100 dollars (for a three row seat), yank the three out, put in the two, and charge 150 dollars for one of the two seats. Problem solved.

I'm just a kid, but on my first trip out of the U.S. I went to England via Iceland AIr. The seats were made of high quality leather (I flew economy, and I think they bumped me up to economy premium or something on the way from Iceland to England). Even though i'm just 13, but I was around the average height of an American. The seats were fine for me, and i'm not stick thin. I got sick on the way there, and It was embarrassing... But they were very nice. Maybe you just went on a bad airline...

This is ridiculous - some of you asking for bigger seats. What you are demanding is a plane with all business-class or first-class seats (I flew on one of those, nice!). I have a great idea! I just made a flight from Seattle to Houston and sat next to a person who was oozing right out of their seat and into mine.... took the whole arm rest and 1/4 of my leg room. Since I paid for a whole seat and didn't get one, they should refund me a portion of my ticket since they took up their seat plus about 1/5 of mine! I fit just fine into those seats as long as I have a whole seat to sit in. Regardless of why they were overweight, they still took up part of my seat.

Solution could be: make seats for big people which cost more (since they use more space) and small seats for smaller people and charge them less....something between business and coach.

I am 5'10'' and dont have any problems with weight, but I do have problems flying in coach, cause I have no space for my legs to fit between the seats. I fly often and my flights take generally more than 5 hours, so you can imagine how fun they are. I always try to get a seat in an aisle to be able to stretch the legs. I think it would be nice of airlines or plane manufacturers to think about comfort of passengers (considering how much we pay for a plane ticket) for once and not about profit.

i'm 6'2" and i agree with Harry, it has always been uncomfortable to fly in those small seats with no leg room, the airlines just try to pack people in like sardines, they try to blame the loss in business on increased threats but the truth is no one wants to put up with their BS anymore, i havn't flown since before 9/11, i would rather take an extra day and drive and be calm than go through all the craziness of flying right now

@brrtown I agree with you about people who are just plain obese, but there are other factors- What about the guy who is 6'7" , with broad hips and shoulders to match? I mean a guy (or woman) who is just genetically large, not at all fat. Despite being under 6 feet, I have shoulders which are unusually broad, and I am rarely comfortable in any airline seat. I am only very slightly over the proper weight for my height, and most of that is because of muscle. The seats need to be bigger.
