I don't approve of the death penalty and I don't have the best argument because I'm only a 13 year old girl. Most people believe we don't have opinions but I feel killing someone does not teach them a lesson and it's just wrong. Why kill someone who's killed because then A) they don't learn anything and B) it's hypocritical. Let me make my case against the death penalty. The innocence project has proved that there are innocent people that are put to death wrongfully accused. Two if you put a person in jail for life you make him think about his crime for the rest of his life and pay for that crime. Is the death penalty cheaper? I think it isn't if you look at figures. Also, the victims need justice and putting a man behind bars for life is just that.

If you mean cost-wise, keeping someone a live for a lifetime can't be cheaper than a fatal injection. Justice is nuetralizing the injustice. I've always wondered why people believe that the taking of a life is inherently wrong regardless of the circumstances. It can have just as many positives and negatives as saving a life. In the vast majority of cases this is not their first offence. By the act of releasing them from jail the first time often after feigning recovery, people have been killed/raped etc. but it's more important to protect repeat offenders than to protect their victims. And honestly, life imprisonment is crueler.

I respect the victims as well. Unfortunately, people have made mistakes that have resulted in innocent people being sentenced to death. These are also innocent victims. Innocent people have been convicted and put to death, but exact numbers are unknown because this is a criminal justice solution where the police and prosectors get to bury their mistakes.
Innocent have been kept in prison against their will, and have been tortored, beaten, raped, and violated. Even if they are released and pardoned later, they still have a stigma attached to them for life. So the solution to that is to eliminate the prison system,right?

The capital justice system is a system created by people. Therefore, it is not infallible. About 60 inmates are executed each year in the U.S. If only half of 1% of these people were innocent, 3 innocent people would be executed each year. That may seem like a low number, but think about it. Really think about it. That's three perfectly innocent people each year. And that, quite simply, is capital murder.
There is an over-representation of minorities on death row. People who are unable to afford good lawyers also face an unfair disadvantage. In order to be juror in a capital punishment trial, the individual must be pro capital punishment... they can't even be undecided. So going into a trial, a defendant already has the cards stacked against him as he faces a jury of hardcore capital punishment supporters - arguably depriving him of his civil right to a fair trial.
This is one of the main reasons I hate America so much. Who do they think they are murdering people and claiming they are a good country? They are playing God. And yes, I know murderers take peoples lives and are just as bad, but it makes me so fucking angry.

Anyone ever heard of Kerry Max Cook? He was a man who spent 22 years on death row for a crime he didn't commit. If I recall correctly, there were 55 cases of procedural and prosecutorial misconduct in his case. As someone who spent over two decades on death row and knows what it's like, Mr. Cook believes that if you really want to punish a murderer, make him spend the rest of his life in prison. There is nothing worse than living without freedom.

The New York Times (that real hard right conservative paper) said that there have recently been 13 studies about capital punishment and all agreed that the death penalty prevents about 3-17 murders per scumbag executed on death row. Lets get death row moving again. 3 executions a day and see if the crime goes down. Can't say it doesnt work if "trying" it means 1000s of appeals and them dying of old age before they are executed!!

Most people believe we don't have opinions but I feel killing someone does not teach them a lesson and it's just wrong. Why kill someone who's killed because then A) they don't learn anything and B) it's hypocritical. Let me make my case against the death penalty. The innocence project has proved that there are innocent people that are put to death wrongfully accused. Two if you put a person in jail for life you make him think about his crime for the rest of his life and pay for that crime. Is the death penalty cheaper? I think it isn't if you look at figures. Also, the victims need justice and putting a man behind bars for life is just that.

I've always wondered why people believe that the taking of a life is inherently wrong regardless of the circumstances. It can have just as many positives and negatives as saving a life. In the vast majority of cases this is not their first offence. By the act of releasing them from jail the first time often after feigning recovery, people have been killed/raped etc. but it's more important to protect repeat offenders than to protect their victims. And honestly, life imprisonment is crueler.

And for each time it doesn't work despite the truth, it's a miscarriage of justice. A glitch in the judicial system. Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. Just because some dude can afford a good lawyer doesn't mean that someone who is truly mentally ill should be executed just because he doesn't have that type of money.

The people with less money are usually the ones that commit capital crimes, so accept. Even if the occasional rich man gets off, that is the way society works. It's called the Golden Rule; whoever has the gold makes the rules.

It may be the way it works, but not the way it should work. Like, de facto segregation may still occur, but that doesn't mean it is right. Perhaps with enough perseverance and enlightenment of all, the inequality and injustice can be almost eradicated.

Kerry Max Cook came within eleven days of being executed for a crime he didn't commit. He got out thanks to Centurian Ministries and the overwhelming mitigating evidence that was hidden by police and prosecutors. During his 22 years on death row, he knew of at least one innocent man who was executed, and two who he believed to be innocent. See the full story in Kerry's book, Chasing Justice.

I respect the victims as well. Unfortunately, people have made mistakes that have resulted in innocent people being sentenced to death. These are also innocent victims. Innocent people have been convicted and put to death, but exact numbers are unknown because this is a criminal justice solution where the police and prosectors get to bury their mistakes.

Innocent have been kept in prison against their will, and have been tortored, beaten, raped, and violated. Even if they are released and pardoned later, they still have a stigma attached to them for life. So the solution to that is to eliminate the prison system,right?

Well, not letting people have children will ensure that none of said children will become murderers, because these parents can't corrupt the children with abuse or even just neglect.

Some people become murderers for various reasons, and the purpose death penalty is to punish them after they have committed that crime. Let's not forget child molestors. Do you think someone who penetrates an innocent child has a right to live? We are talking tabboo here.

i DO think he has a right to live. I do not advocate what he did, but neither I nor the govt has the right to "play God" by deciding who gets to live and die. If someone can rise up from child abuse, molestation, and even mental illness, props to him/her, but a lot of molestors, rapists, murderers, etc have come from such a background. So... let's kill neglectful/abusive parents and (anyone with) mentally illness, as they have erred just as heinously to contribute? I don't think so.

Well, that's why police carry Tasers now, instead of guns. I think what Adrienne meant to say is that capital punishment may lead to a slippery slope (as it has in history, i.e. ancient China), though executing someone who should, in theory, be equally guilty as a murderer.
I must also give congrats to ma7799, as he has been civil and hasn't done silly things like cuss someone out just because of disagreement. He has used reason instead of saying "FU!" and making himself look a fool.

The capital justice system is a system created by people. Therefore, it is not infallible. About 60 inmates are executed each year in the U.S. If only half of 1% of these people were innocent, 3 innocent people would be executed each year. That may seem like a low number, but think about it. Really think about it. That's three perfectly innocent people each year. And that, quite simply, is capital murder.

There is an over-representation of minorities on death row. People who are unable to afford good lawyers also face an unfair disadvantage. In order to be juror in a capital punishment trial, the individual must be pro capital punishment... they can't even be undecided. So going into a trial, a defendant already has the cards stacked against him as he faces a jury of hardcore capital punishment supporters - arguably depriving him of his civil right to a fair trial.

This is one of the main reasons I hate America so much. Who do they think they are murdering people and claiming they are a good country? They are playing God. And yes, I know murderers take peoples lives and are just as bad, but it makes me so fucking angry.
May God take mercy on all those who support, carry out or have any connection with capital punishment. You will come to see the evil of your ways.

I don't think you see my point. Someone kills someone, so the authorities kill the murderer. The message seems to be that it's ok for you to take a life, but not the murderer, and that's a pretty mixed message if you ask me.

Anyone ever heard of Kerry Max Cook? He was a man who spent 22 years on death row for a crime he didn't commit. If I recall correctly, there were 55 cases of procedural and prosecutorial misconduct in his case. As someone who spent over two decades on death row and knows what it's like, Mr. Cook believes that if you really want to punish a murderer, make him spend the rest of his life in prison. There is nothing worse than living without freedom.

but you can't deny the statistics. it is not an effective deterrent. the USA still has higher murder rate than many countries without capital punishment. the ones with lower AND with the capital punishment tend to be ones in Asia, where their culture actually acts as a deterrent instead. I would know. I am Asian.

Let's get onto the ethics of this thing. I don't agree with the Catholic Church about much, but I agree with them on this point: we don't have the right to say who lives and who dies. Even someone who has committed a horrible crime has the potential to do good in the future: The classic example is Robert Stroud, the Birdman of Alcatraz. It didn't make him a good man, but if we'd killed him we'd be minus some knowledge and a book.

And you've failed to point that New York at it's worst had no death penalty. You also failed to point out that Mexico, Colombia and Russia DON'T have the death penalty. Mexico is the kidnapping capitol of the world, Colombia is the Cocaine capitol and Russia home to the most violent crime family ever.

The New York Times (that real hard right conservative paper) said that there have recently been 13 studies about capital punishment and all agreed that the death penalty prevents about 3-17 murders per scumbag executed on death row. Lets get death row moving again. 3 executions a day and see if the crime goes down. Can't say it doesnt work if "trying" it means 1000s of appeals and them dying of old age before they are executed!!

Haven't seen it, but I also haven't seen any 13 studies about capital punishment that agree on anything. Unless there are 13 other studies that contradict them and you're not telling us about. It sounds very unlikely: we don't have a death row in Canada, nor does any other civilized, developed country, and our murder rate is 1/3 of yours (in Greece, 1/6). Even in Finland, which has the highest murder rate in W. Europe, it's still 35% less than yours. How do you explain that?

Conclusions from the stats I quoted: liberal places abolish the death penalty and have low murder rates, conservative places keep the death penalty and have high murder rates. I believe it's the conservative eye-for-an-eye macho kill-em-all mindset that creates murderers. Us liberals don't have that problem.

You are introducing all kinds of uncontrolled variables here. I was comparing societies with roughly similar socioeconomic levels. New York has a homicide rate of 4.8, about the national average, despite Puerto Rican gangs. The 2nd-highest rate is MD (9.3), which has none of the problems you mention, & CA, which does, is only 8th. 6 of the top 10 are in the Deep South, not a major place for immigrants or gangs. And do learn how to spell capital.
