Charles Atlas, what a striking man. Perfect features, perfect build for a body builder. He was the grand-daddy of them all when it came to building muscles and physique.
@moriya2k2 Don't get how that's sexist. They had to clarify how to answer certain questions, they also consulted over one of the men's questions as well... and do all the time on the show.
@rocknroll015 I'm talking about the "Can women take advantage of services?" question. Like the idea of a woman bodybuilder just scared the hell out of them.
I'm sorry, but Mr. X seems rather stupid . Cannot understand " Do you work outdoors?" Cannot understand or relate to " Do you wear those clothes ? "
and Dorothy's queries concerning women and 'moving about ' both had him bamboozled.............I don't get it. What's the big problem, Mr. Atlas ? I feel that my idol Mr. John C. Daly mislead and mistreated his panel in this episode.
Diana was reported being alive at the age of 89, according to a smithsonian article done on her famous father. She had declined to be interviewed for that article.
Charles Atlas was in the right place at the right time. He was in the golden age of television. He was America when America was a country to be proud to live in, before the nightmare of liberalism started rotting the very foundation of America.
lol, the kid obviously recognized him right off the bat, likely thanks to Atlas's aggressive marketing aimed at teenagers at the time - but he tried to prolong it for the sake of the game.
I am an Atlas man myself. I do enjoy pumping iron, but the Charles Atlas system still works even half a century later, and I think you are a lot less prone to being injured for life using his workout than you are if you drop a barbell on your foot.
i'm a firm Dynamic Tension man ! two years on and my body looks like a panther on the hunt from the outside and feels like a power pylon coursing with lightning from the inside ! but a word of warning - Charles Atlas's system isn't for the weak of will or the faint of heart !
other famous people used his course too, like Max Baer the boxer, Allen Wells the 1980 Olympic 100m sprint champion, Theodore Steinway, the piano manufacturer, Bertil Fox, former Mr. Universe, and Robert Riplyey of "Ripley's Believe it or Not!"
Its true that his method has "no implements", it doesn't use barbells and such, the Atlas method involves push ups and similar type movements to build muscle. I wonder if his ads are still in the back of comic books?
I've haven't seen them on the backs of comic books in many years. There is a website for Charles Atlas should you be interested in his exercise program.
Loudthebody - You are right on. The Atlas course has stood the test of time and gave me wonderful results. He was very very humble man and really didn't want to keep up with his buibess after his wife died in 1965. I know his son, Charles Jr, who will be 90 years of age on December 12th.
@colotron There was a film made in 1955 called Geordie which starred Bill Travers as a Scotsman called Geordie who took a correspondence course in body building devised by "Henry Samson" (guess who inspired this character). When cheering him on the the hammer throwing at the local Highland games and the 1955 Olympics, his mother and girlfriend would say "Come on my wee Geordie".
@Cool2BCeltic - I took the Atlas "Dynamic Tension" course in 1975 and put 5 inches on my chest and 2 inches on each bicep. I went on to place in the NABBA Jr. Mr. Scotland title. The winner that year was Kenny Paterson from Glasgow. Kenny died at 21 from complications arising from steriod abuse. At 52, I'm still here and training again! I also had the privilege of knowing Atlas' son, Charles Jr, for the last 11 years of his life. He passed away in 2008 aged 89.
Charles Atlas was the real deal. He lived a clean lifestyle, was a devout Christian, and loyal family man who shunned the limelight. Many athletes used his program, including Joe Louis and Rocky Marciano. The concepts of his program still apply today.
Great post, thanks. There really isn't a lot of video on Charles Atlas. This is very rare. He seemed like a very humble gentleman. I read somewhere that he sold his business and didn't really want to be bothered much anymore after his wife passed away back in the 60's. For anybody who wants to get back in shape and can't go to a gym, The Charles Atlas course is very good. I had it for years and never looked at it. I started using it about 4 months ago and I'm getting great results. No joke.
I Always wanted to see the WML episode broadcast the day after I was born. Now I have. Thanx for posting this. This episode illustrates why WML was both interesting and educational -- Charles Atlas, followed by a wig maker, culminating in a mystery guest appearance by Jane Powell. Alexrod exhibits smarts and charm: too bad he did not appear more often on the panel.
@soulierinvestments Wow, you were born one week before me! All this time I've watched your clips and read your WML comments, I never dreamed we would be so close in age. Are the other segments of this program available on YouTube? I'd love to see the wigmaker segment.
Bright guy that screen and play writer Axelrod.

He was born in Italy, just found that out.

they might have guess bodybuilder if he hadn't said no when they asked if he used implements
but it was technically right since he used his dynamic tension method, and had only lifted weights in the past.

Yes, he was very devoted to his wife. One thing I must say, whenever his name is mentioned in Scotland people still say "Come on my wee Geordie!"
