Beautiful! On the left side of the lower unit there should be a door that has two flat head screws. If you take this off you can put a standard set of rabbit ears on it for water rather then a bin. Made things alot easier for mine. :)
According to my original 1960 Johnson/Evinrude shop manaual your engine pumps water the way it was designed to. the thermostat closes at low RPM to keep engine at proper running temp. (assures smooth running at low speeds.) The engine will spit droplets of water like you described and sometimes steam. like in your video. I had a 1967100 hp Evinrude and it performed the same way. Enjoy your Johnson. They are great engines. post more pics. ;^)
Another boating summer coming to an end and it was another great summer on the water! I guess I should make more videos...I belong to Golden State Glassics here in CA. We all own 1950's-60's fiberglass boats and the majority sport vintage motors as well.
Many of the guys/gals shoot videos on the water during our camping weekends and day runs. Also, documenting restoring of our Classics.
And YES! I have and will continue to take good care of my Johnson!!!!
Yes I do! In fact we chose the Elgin back in 1986 for its size as the only tow vehicle we had was our 67' VW bus. You just have to know what your doing considering the motor is in the back. Get a lot of funny/disbelieving looks on the launch ramp through the years. Back it in til the tailpipe touches the water and your good to launch.
According to my Johnson/Evinrude shop manaul (actual shop manual from the 1960's) your engine pumps water the way it was designed to. The thermostat closes to assure proper temp @slow speed. (so engine runs smoother) You will see small droplets of water at the exaust hole and sometimes some steam, (according to the manaual). I had a 100 hp 1967 Evinrude. It performed the same way. Enjoy your Johnson. They are great motors. Post some more pic's. :^)
LOVE your vid. My dad had the 60hp version which was a smaller block. It only lasted 10 years then he sold it and got a 1976 85, then a 1978 140. Best engines ever made. Take care of it, ok?
I love my bus! Owned her since 1984 and got her for $750 and 12pk of Bud! She didn't look like she does now back then, but loved her that way too! I am a member of "Team Johnson" of CA.....we don't hang those black things on our beloveds! LOL Oh, and I out ran one of those black things on a speed boat with my Johnson! HeHe
The 66 Johnson has a thermostat, until it opens there is no water pumped. I always hold my breath until it does I am ready to shut her down quickly. Plus during idling very little comes out, it just kinda spits. Under a load more is pumped out. ON my 1961 Elgin 40hp (Scott Built) man, now that thing throws water! Each outboard is different.
you need to change your impeller then, if your getting satisfactory water flow at higher rpm but not much at lower rpm thats not good for your motor.... ill bet the mist at low rpm's is very hot as well, either your impeller is bad or you may have a bad seal and the water is not filling up the block correctly
Thank you for your concerns.....the impeller was recently replaced, however it was just for good measure since we were replacing the lower unit seals. The one that was in there was in great shape, but figured since we were there. The flow you see is the same as it has been since 1986. We are careful just for good measure to always check the heads for hot when we do our shake downs. They feel warm, but never hot. Just seems to be the nature of my beast.
I've got the same motor on my boat, mine has electric shift. I got the thing 6 years ago on a 1967 boat, and 6 years later the thing is still running great. A new coat of paint and decals, and mine looks and runs brand new. These things are bullet proof!
Mine is electric shift as well. Great motors! Mine hangs on a 1963 Elgin which was sold through the Sears catalogs. I replaced the floor in her a few years back and now she is solid as a rock. Had a video up on my floor replacement, but after years of being up it got zapped a couple of months ago because the music was by Matchbox 20. I guess I need to redo it and put another song on there.....maybe some AC/DC!
i had a 68 model 65 HP.I bought it on a 14ft runabout. For less than $600.Took it home without spark.Checked the points gap to big .New set of points and it didn't miss abeat.Still wish i had that beast.Best motor i ever owned.

why does your engine not appear to be pumping water?
