When I was five, on Saturdays, the kids who lived across the street used to open all the windows and the front door to their house, turn their stereo up to full volume, and blast this song. Of course, that was after their mother had gone to work. haha!
"Yes, this is the Ghetto"...."Where I was slippin into Darkness"....Just before I went to " War"....where I was dodging all that "Cosmic Slop" Where I found out, what does it take to win your Love for Me!"
Now this is music, it expressed everyday struggles and real life of the ghetto, music of the early days was so a awesome because it came to where we live, it told our stories of struggles, suffering, freedom and love.
TO FIND YOUR PURPOSE IN LIFE IS TO BE FOUND IN GOD OUR MAKER, THE LORD JESUS CHRIST!!! HE CAME THAT YOU AND I NIGHT BE FREE!!
old music, is old. really. from the impressions, to the temptations, to the ohio players, it keeps coming at us.and it only gets better! btw...aretha's "mary don't you weep" is so awesome!
Yes mayena, the amazing Leroy Hutson did co-write this and you can see his influence all over it I think. He is possibly the most under-rated soul great of the 70s.
@kmashers Every morning before we went to school, we would listen to the radio KDIA 1310 - S.F Bay Area, and would hear this song. I grew up in the ghetto back then & where it says "leave her alone", that really happened. There were certain things men wouldn't do 2, or in front of girls & women. What happened?!!!
Now I've always aspired to gems like this, but I never knew Too Short and Gerald Levert remade this (while addin Short's lyrics)... love conscious musicianship. For conscious music = MUSICIANSHIP.
To scsoXtreme, I say RIGHT ON! It is nice for young adolescent men listening to the artists that cleared the way for their own generation. Young men like you are to be commended.
@scsoXtreme Not at all. It's good for someone as young as yourself to learn/respect the history of music... and the message behind it. Good for you. Stay educated.
No body does it like Donny. You left too soon. He is one of my top 2 all time favorite male vocalist. Just his vocals were what others attempted to reach. If you are on this page you would see my other top 2, Curtis Mayfield, two of the very best that ever decided to vocalize. Down to earth and with a message, if you just listen.
Thank you for being in my era of this life. Too bad others could possibly never know about you two.
This and Runaway Child were the two greatest soul songs ever made in my opinion. The combination of the music and the vocals were unsurpassed. I could lisren to these at any time and still love them forever. There will never be another Donny.
Estimated friend, if you want to listen again this song and an endless number of successes of the love I suggest you to visit Radio MUSICA PARA MIMOS - looks for his direction URL in Google ( search Musica para Mimos in Google)-. best romantic music of all the times in Internet, is great, is very good ...!!!
Hello firstchoice1956, Man I used to work at WUNR-AM and WTBS-FM back then. On WUNR Super 16 we had James Lewis "The Love Man", Dawud Abdullah, Bobby G (Soul Man), and Me as "Rick Brisbane" and "Dr K" on Sweet 16 Soul Automation. We played soul music from 11pm - 4am on 1600 am WUNR Super 16. James Lewis the 3rd was the MC at the Sugar Shack on Boylston Street. So many artists came through: Harold Melvin, The Delphonics, Blue Magic, etc.
@fnels I used to listen to WUNR when I was a teen in the early 1980's from Summerside, Prince Edward Island, Canada. (Look it up on google maps). I loved the Soul/Funk music that wa splayed in the early hours of the morning... I once requested a tape of some of the music, Grandmaster Flash, One Way, D-Train etc... and I got one in the mail from Dawud Abdullah in 1983. I still have the cassette... Good times... :)
Reminds me of Living in the Boston, DC and Baltimore Neighborhoods. You did not go into Cherry Hill unless you knew someone up there or had kin folk there.
Wow...this takes me back to my on air radio days at WTBS in Cambridge, MA. Seven nights a week at 12 mid THE GHETTO by DH played in it's entirety. The show (The Ghetto) instilled pride, was an institution, and rocked the airwaves of Boston, MA. Fans recorded the show on cassette and played it back during the day. Back then there was no fulltime Black station in Beantown. James Clarke , DK Gilmore, Frankie Nelson, Starchild, Reggie Moseley, etc were the DJs that kept Black music on the air.
@fnels Hey! I lived in Cambridge and listened to WTBS myself. I remember when this was played and I remember JC The Master Blaster, James Eric and co. What a small world. The only other stations back then were WILD and WUNR (which came a bit later) but WTBS was what was happening back then.
Don't tell me all this great black music from my teen years has been replaced by gangstar rap crap?!? You can really groooooooooooove to music like this . . . complete with its snap-crackle-n-vinyl-pop!
@TommyVF i'm pretty sure it is somewhere.....i think it was just the lp version which as a 45 single (if you remember what those were) was probably split in two as an a and b side.
DJ's in the clubs and socials would always extend the song even longer then it already played. Whistles were heard on the dance floor, cause that was a fade back then.
I remember dancing to this in the clubs and big socials when it forst came out. We had a certain dance that went with it's deep beat. Our afro's tightening up because of the sweat. We had soooo much fun. We even danced in the aisles at his concerts.
