I can live with the added CGI used to improve SOME of the effects (E.g. Lightsabers, Death Star Explosion, etc). What annoys me is when the changes ruin the story of the movies.
Take the added Jabba scene in 'A New Hope'. First off, it's a pointless scene that ruins the pacing, but also Jabba's character is nothing like he was in ROTJ, instead he's a complete push-over.
Then their's the terrible musical number in Jabba's Palace and now Vader screaming 'No' making ROTJ a complete joke.
Lucas is a perfectionist, it's that simple. If his opinions don't gel with you, there is an option on the DVD to watch the original theatrical release (at least, I have that option on mine).
Only George Lucas, could look at one of the most beloved movies ever made, and say, "It's not as good as I wanted it to be" If the movie wasn't a hit with fans or critics, and if it tanked at the box office, I could see why he'd be upset.
So George Lucas says in this video that the 2004 DVD Versions of The Star Wars Trilogy were the final versions of the films, the changes made to that release were the final changes. But then he goes and makes more changes to the films for the Blu-Ray Versions.
I didn't but the Blu-Ray set because I am tired of all the changes made to the trilogy. I am going to wait for a better release of The Star Wars Films on Blu-Ray. Hopefully with the Original Versions restored in HD.
NO! the unaltered versions were released as a legitimate digital transfer on dvd in, I think, 2007. I remember this specifically because my local FYE was advertising the event.
@brainboob there was no dvd transfer for the unaltered versions, just the nonanamorphic laserdisc version as a bonus on one of the releases. Lucas basically said that he wanted the original versions to disappear off the face of the Earth.
He's full of shit. The story didn't actually change with the Special Edition. He changed a lot of visuals, replaced an awesome song with a shit one (Jabba's palace) and things of that ilk ... but the story, the actual narrative itself, was in no way hindered by the old technology. The speeder bikes were better to watch than the podracers. The space battles were more interesting. If anything, the 'shit' technology probably helped his movies from sucking cock.
I get that some of you grew up with those original unaltered versions, and I get that you don't like the special editions, but the original unaltered versions are still out there; if I'm not mistaken, then on the latest special edition saga.

@Coolyfett Story wise and character wise the older films are much superior... alot of the characters in the new films almost seem like excuses for toys and merchandising... like Darth Maul, he didn't even speak in the movie, the story would of been just as crap without the inclusion of characters like him that are only there for the purpose of fight scenes.
If he was limited by the technology when he made the first three films, I don't want to imagine what he would have come up with instead. Aside from a few tweaks here and there (like Ian McDiarmid as the Emperor's hologram), and cleaning up the look, what could have possibly needed improving upon? I think CGI made George lazy and he forgot he needed an actual script and acting for the prequels.

I'm really perplexed these days by people on forums claiming such movies have "obviously fake CGI" and trashing CGI of certain levels of detail and rendering and motion capture that have only been around for barely over 10 years. What, pray tell, are some examples of CGI that is good? What impossible standard are you guys measuring CGI against? Or do you just hate all CGI period?

@RevanGabriel , I don't think all of the movies were made worse, but I do honestly believe the changes in The Empire Strikes Back were almost all bad. Especially editing in unnecessary items, like the shot of Darth Vader going into his ship being added right into the final chase, pretty much ruining the pace of the last scene.
In EMPIRE I like how they expanded Cloud City rather than just seeing white walls for most of it. We got to see how glamorous the city was Lando had built it up to be in his dialogue. I don't care for the Vader going into his ship shot either though I don't think it was godawful or anything. I thought adding Ian McDiarmid in was fine for continuity reasons as he plays him in all the other films. Were there any changes I missed?
@SLPIFan, I have to say I like how they expanded Cloud City. The other change I didn't like was the extended scene on Hoth in the cave. It was much better when you saw less of the snow creature (Luke was in the cave hanging upside down). In the extended version, there is much more footage of the creature eating his catch with a lot of blood and tissue being shown.
Can anyone tell me why it is that Lucas decided to add more muppets and cartoons to Jedi when what the movie REALLY needed and STILL needs is some brushing up for certain FX which were difficult to achieve back in the 80's. Most notably the Star Destroyer crash and the melting Carbonite. Really, can anyone explain this to me?

George Lucas had his original script turned down by Fox because it ripped off the Green Lantern Corps. He then ripped off Glen A Larson's ideas and along with Fox he slaved to get "his" project on screen before Larson, giving the false impression that he came up with it first. It's really no wonder that Fox insisted he not direct Empire or Jedi, two movies that were FAR better for not having his meddling fatass at the helm!

Lucas has talked a lot about the "small movies" he intended to make after he was finished with Star Wars. I don't see anything like that on the horizon, but I'm fascinated by what he might be capable of these days without the use of special effects.
@Eywa355 actually the changes were completely unnecessary and the digital effects are extremely dated by today's standards and it sticks out like a sore thumb. it all looks so fake. but it's just wrong to do this. these movies changed peoples' lives and for 20 years, they watched these movies the way they remembered it. Lucas took these movies and basically turned them into experiments in hopes of gaining more technological recognition. the SE is basically a big "fuck you" to the audience

George talks about "improvements" but ROTJ is unbearable to watch now. The "music number" is far more objectionable than Jar-Jar in TPM. And replacing Sebastian Shaw at the end of Jedi is nothing short of butchery.

because special effects (specifically bland, uninteresting, clearly fake CGI) doesn't carry a movie. the prequels are poorly written, poorly acted, and i don't think George Lucas put any heart or soul into the movies. it's just his way of saying "my computer is better than yours."

However there is something special about the PT for me because I was a kid growing up with those movies. PT is amazing visually and has a very political story that I love. I love OT, but PT is more complexly structured and there is more to it than just the simple story of the OT, which is not bad.All in all, I love Star Wars

@MozTS indeed. i think Gary Kurtz deserves the most credit for Star Wars. in interviews he talks about how sometimes George would be willing to keep mediocre shots during the editing just because they were running short on schedule and Gary fought with him a lot. Gary Kurtz is the real reason why Star Wars is just so good. he put in so much work and was so hands on and wouldn't allow anything to be mediocre, unlike George.

Lucas was an executive producer, which basically means that he put up the money for it, and in Lucas's cases, provided ideas for the story and was involved in post-production. he rarely came on set. Kurtz was on the set so much more working with Kershner.

Lucas discribes in detail how efects but also acting worked and wwhat they mean, and even talked about the costumes Aldo excecutive producer is ver iportant.

Kurtz was much more concerned about making a good movie. Kurtz also realized before production that the number one thing on Lucas's mind was merchandising, not a film that could match ESB

He's full of shit. The story didn't actually change with the Special Edition. He changed a lot of visuals, replaced an awesome song with a shit one (Jabba's palace) and things of that ilk ... but the story, the actual narrative itself, was in no way hindered by the old technology. The speeder bikes were better to watch than the podracers. The space battles were more interesting. If anything, the 'shit' technology probably helped his movies from sucking cock.

If he was limited by the technology when he made the first three films, I don't want to imagine what he would have come up with instead. Aside from a few tweaks here and there (like Ian McDiarmid as the Emperor's hologram), and cleaning up the look, what could have possibly needed improving upon? I think CGI made George lazy and he forgot he needed an actual script and acting for the prequels.

I'm really perplexed these days by people on forums claiming such movies have "obviously fake CGI" and trashing CGI of certain levels of detail and rendering and motion capture that have only been around for barely over 10 years. What, pray tell, are some examples of CGI that is good? What impossible standard are you guys measuring CGI against? Or do you just hate all CGI period?

Especially editing in unnecessary items, like the shot of Darth Vader going into his ship being added right into the final chase, pretty much ruining the pace of the last scene.

In EMPIRE I like how they expanded Cloud City rather than just seeing white walls for most of it. We got to see how glamorous the city was Lando had built it up to be in his dialogue. I don't care for the Vader going into his ship shot either though I don't think it was godawful or anything. I thought adding Ian McDiarmid in was fine for continuity reasons as he plays him in all the other films. Were there any changes I missed?

@SLPIFan, I have to say I like how they expanded Cloud City. The other change I didn't like was the extended scene on Hoth in the cave. It was much better when you saw less of the snow creature (Luke was in the cave hanging upside down). In the extended version, there is much more footage of the creature eating his catch with a lot of blood and tissue being shown.

Can anyone tell me why it is that Lucas decided to add more muppets and cartoons to Jedi when what the movie REALLY needed and STILL needs is some brushing up for certain FX which were difficult to achieve back in the 80's. Most notably the Star Destroyer crash and the melting Carbonite. Really, can anyone explain this to me?

George Lucas had his original script turned down by Fox because it ripped off the Green Lantern Corps. He then ripped off Glen A Larson's ideas and along with Fox he slaved to get "his" project on screen before Larson, giving the false impression that he came up with it first. It's really no wonder that Fox insisted he not direct Empire or Jedi, two movies that were FAR better for not having his meddling fatass at the helm!

Lucas choose not to direct the sequels cause he found directing too stresull and exhausting, but he still lead the mkings versaw production, and istructed and closely superised the dirctors even uncreditcly co-directing the film and directing the second unit plus he still served as excecutive producer wrote the stories abd co-wrote the screnplays!!!!!!!!!

Lucas has talked a lot about the "small movies" he intended to make after he was finished with Star Wars. I don't see anything like that on the horizon, but I'm fascinated by what he might be capable of these days without the use of special effects.

@Eywa355 actually the changes were completely unnecessary and the digital effects are extremely dated by today's standards and it sticks out like a sore thumb. it all looks so fake. but it's just wrong to do this. these movies changed peoples' lives and for 20 years, they watched these movies the way they remembered it. Lucas took these movies and basically turned them into experiments in hopes of gaining more technological recognition. the SE is basically a big "fuck you" to the audience

he shouldve just left them alone, when i watch star wars, i wanna see it the original way: retro, i dont wanna watch a 30 year old movie that looks like it was made yesterday. plus he only directed the first of the original movies so he is messing up the vision of the other 2 directors as well> but i guess at this point whos gunna question him?

@pnaught1 Actually there are DVD's of the Theatrical Versions, although they haven't been restored, so the quality isn't very good (so I've heard). You can buy them individually, and they each come with their respective Special Edition as well.

George talks about "improvements" but ROTJ is unbearable to watch now. The "music number" is far more objectionable than Jar-Jar in TPM. And replacing Sebastian Shaw at the end of Jedi is nothing short of butchery.
At least ESB is left mostly untouched...

@gaozhi2007 For your information the new series is @#!*% awesome. In fact, all of his Star Wars films are epic in their own way. Everybody seems to think that the prequels @#!% up Star Wars. All of the films were astonishing even before he remastered them. How can episodes 1,2,and 3 suck when he produced them with better technology than the first three??? The special effects are remarkable. If anyone out there agrees with the REAL Star Wars fans, plz "vote up" this message!!!

because special effects (specifically bland, uninteresting, clearly fake CGI) doesn't carry a movie. the prequels are poorly written, poorly acted, and i don't think George Lucas put any heart or soul into the movies. it's just his way of saying "my computer is better than yours."

@pnaught1 I don't I was just wanting to see how many people would get pissed off and make a big deal about it. I see Star Wars as one big movie and love all of the episodes. However there is something special about the PT for me because I was a kid growing up with those movies. PT is amazing visually and has a very political story that I love. I love OT, but PT is more complexly structured and there is more to it than just the simple story of the OT, which is not bad.All in all, I love Star Wars

Well, the verdict is in. With the assistance of talented scriptwriters and directors to fix everything, Lucas can create a fantastic movie, the SW originals demonstrate this. Left to his own devices, he produces turd after turd. Oh, for the days when the man was forced to give up certain areas of control at the command of studios which spotted him for the talentless hack that he is!

@MozTS indeed. i think Gary Kurtz deserves the most credit for Star Wars. in interviews he talks about how sometimes George would be willing to keep mediocre shots during the editing just because they were running short on schedule and Gary fought with him a lot. Gary Kurtz is the real reason why Star Wars is just so good. he put in so much work and was so hands on and wouldn't allow anything to be mediocre, unlike George.

He had easy talking, if the film went over schedule and was never rreleased it wouldn`t cost him anything and he wouldn`t be responsible, Lucas would be and would lose a lot. 2. the idea Lucas left in mediocre stuff is rediculous, he found his own effecs company, annd strugled to create the newest effects, and he pushed the crew around, did location ambition shooting.........

@pnaught1 , story and screenwriter, and the excecutive producer, why wouold wwhen Luxcas wants to be lazy and Kurt too work hard, why would Kurt get his wish. Lucas was his boss so could just tell him no, and if Kurtz would try to quote fight him, he would atomataicly lose. Boss wjho hires prroducer andf pays him and owns projec vbeing worked on beats employe producer. Also Kurtz only co-producer altough credited as full propducer Empire. Cause halfway Howard of Jedi replaced him when he left.

@reviewreviewer1 wow...that's the dumbest thing i've ever heard. you really need to read some Kurtz interviews. you're giving Lucas way too much credit...yeah he did a lot of hard work on ANH, but Kurtz did so much more work on ESB than Lucas. Lucas was an executive producer, which basically means that he put up the money for it, and in Lucas's cases, provided ideas for the story and was involved in post-production. he rarely came on set. Kurtz was on the set so much more working with Kershner.

@pnaught1 uh why should I watch urts intervirews when re has no credibility cause he just takes personal maters public. Lucas actualy hweavily involved with ESB. Both Kishner and Kurtz take his credit away. It seems astough Lucas somehow let`s ythis go by cause hw saus similar stuff, but when yo watch ausfio commentaries it just fals apart. Lucas discribes in detail how efects but also acting worked and wwhat they mean, and even talked about the costumes Aldo excecutive producer is ver iportant.

@reviewreviewer1 it was actually during ESB post-production when Lucas would allow for mediocre shots to go unfixed by saying, "it's good enough." and Kurtz fought him on that and he WON. do some reading buddy. Kurtz was much more concerned about making a good movie. Lucas really didn't have a whole lot to be worried about anyway considering the shit loads of money he was going to make from merchandising AND ESB.

@reviewreviewer1 Kurtz left after ESB because Lucas was convinced (and this is all factual, not just speculation) that the audience was really only there for the thrill and not so much for the story. the original story for ROTJ was basically thrown in the trash (which Kurtz was a huge part of) and just turned into a big rollercoaster ride. Kurtz also realized before production that the number one thing on Lucas's mind was merchandising, not a film that could match ESB

@reviewreviewer1 Lucas hardly ever came on set during ESB. at one point, he tried to edit the film his way and Kershner and Kurtz just laughed at him because it was horrible. Lucas even admitted that doing that was a mistake. even during ANH, Kurtz was much more hands on with the cast and crew because Lucas wasn't very good at dealing with them, especially the actors.
Kurtz put so much effort into Star Wars and ESB, and will never get the credit he deserves because Lucas takes it all
