thats so awesome. i have a guitar im making right now and its currently unfinished. i have a local guy who says he can do some cool stuff like that for me. he says that he can do th ecustom stuff before i finish the guitar. but the thing is i dont know if itll show through the solid white finish i plan to do. anyone know about this stuff?
Nasty. Striping should accentuate a guitar's lines, not be the star itself. Tom should design a few guitars instead of covering other people's.
I've been in the sign business for thirty years or so, and have designed a ton of guitars, so I know whereof I speak.
Also if that's One-Shot he should NOT be paletting that brush between his fingers, it's got lead in it and fingertips are the best place shy of eating paint to absorb VOCs and toxins. Get some gloves, man. And show some restraint.
Nope, but bands shouldn't have it, and striping should. Look I'm not trying to be mean, I just think the object that's being accented is more the issue. Guitars are generally fairly beautiful. What one doesn't do is more important than what you do add, and that's a hard thing to learn..
I mostly don't care for striping, but have several friends and colleagues who do it well, check out John Hannukaine, Todd Hanson, Russ Mowry,Bob Behounek-- SignCraft magazine is a good place to find 'em.
u must read this. once u have started there is no turning back. a little 10 year old girl was raped and murderded in 1945. her body was not found until 1947. then a boy last week read this and did not copy and paste this message. the dead girl appeared in his room haunting him and killed him. if you do not copy and paste this onto 10 vidoes in 30 minutes the dead girl will apear in your room tonight and haunt you and kill you. well you
so you are applying 1-Shot lettering enamel over the original enamel of the guitar? how permanent is this? do you have to add anything over it? does it smear?
It'll hold up pretty good (especially if you waxed it occasionaly) but it would be better if it were cleared over with some sort of poly-urethane. It would last as long as the guitar paint.
From what I know the best way to make this permanent would be to first scuff the original surface lightly with 1000 grit sandpaper (assuming it has the usual lacquer finish) then pinstripe, then clear coat the whole thing again with lacquer. (3 coats, then scuff lightly, then 3 more.)
That's the normal process except that you can't put lacquer over urethane or straight enamel. Lacquer can only be used over lacquer. 1-Shot is alkyd enamel but if you use the hardener you can clear over it with urethane, just wait a day or two after 'striping to aply the clear.
This is amazing! Straight lines and I have never worked very well so I'm enamored with how good you are! Anyway, i have a baby taylor that I want to paint some swirl-things on. I don't want to do the whole guitar, just certain sections and I was wondering what paint to use, if I need to sand, and also what clear coat? Also, would paint pens work, or should I just stick to straight forward paint? Thanks!!!!
I use 1-Shot lettering enamel. I sand only when I am going to use a clear-coat (some sort of urethane clear). Also when you use clear over straight enamel you must use 1-Shot hardener(#4007)in the 'striping paint. Don't know 'bout paint pens, I only use a 'striping brush. You don't have to use hardener in the paint if you aren't going to clear but it will hold up and last longer if you do. The only permanent 'striping is under clear.
I use 1-Shot lettering enamel used for sign painting. Yes you can do it yourself (I've been doing myself for 29 years. Mom caught me doing it myself once and said I'd go blind so I told her that I'd stop when I needed to wear glasses).
Nice clean classic lines Tom...however, palettizing the brush with fingers would drive me nuts. ;P To each his own brutha!

Lol at the people who say this is a fake guitar. Obviously it's real, strings are removed to maximize hand space. And Some pinstriping is there too.

I use auto-air car paint for quitars and I just use dupli-color clear coat (also for cars) on it. It's lacquer and the auto-air is water based.
