Jeff was my first boyfriend, when I was 5 years old, we lived next door to each other, in Hartford, CT. His Father, Joe, played the the drums, with The Hartford Symphony Orchestra. And he was awesome, and his son's, Jeff, played the drums, Steven played the guitar, and Micheal, played the synthesizer. They were a great family. Just before Jeff, passed on, I was thinking of writing him a letter, and regretting it, that I never did....My Mom tried to keep in touch with the family...
Great tribute to the greatest drummer of all time, Jeff Pocaro. But maybe it would be better if you used a track he drummed on, Bottom Of Your Soul was off of the album Falling In Between, which was recoded close to 15 years after Jeff's death and features Simon Philips on drums.
Great feel for the instrument...Jeff...thanks man, you make music for god now...he obviously wanted you to make heaven a better place...I will join you one day and well ratchet it up when I get there ok? keep practicing
Had a great tour with jeff and Toto in ´76 and will never forget the fun at Alte Oper Frankfurt in ´81 Love you groove Jeff ...R.I.P. Steve and Mike your brotzher was the coolest...
The coolest cat to have ever walked the planet. In the drummer's dictionary, when you look up "groove", it should simply have a picture of Jeff Porcaro. RIP Jeff, love from all your fellow drummers!!!!!
Wonderful. He plays on 2 Les Dudek..yes...Les Dudek songs one is City Magic. You should hear this!!! Jeff was probably 17 years old and he rips!!! You get a whole new perspective on his playing when you hear City Magic. Amazing RIP Jeff
In my book the two class acts of drumming in the last decade or so: Jeff Porcaro and Larrie Londin, both were shining lights who will never extinguish. We all miss you both.
Bon Voyage once more, Mr. Jeff Porcaro. The Philippines grieved then when you passed on more than a decade ago. We still grieve now but we're happy with the truth that your legacy and your talent will live on......FOREVER!
He told me that he started to have trouble breathing and developed chest pains. Just then he collapsed into asystole (flat line). We immediately started CPR and assumed he would not be a difficult save because we were right there to attend to his needs and CPR was started within seconds. He never had any type of heart rhythm at all on scene (nothing to shock with a defibrilator). We loaded him into the ambulance and continued CPR To West Hills hospital.....
I was one of the last people to talk to Jeff seconds before he collapsed. I was a medic for Pruner Ambulance in CA. I remember getting a call for a person with chest pains. We responded and arrived at his home. He was in his home studio music room. I remember looking at all the albums on the walls and wondering who he was. I asked him what seemed to be the problem and he held up a gallon size container of Ortho bug pesticide and he said he was spraying it in his yard......
he was king of the bernie perdue shuffle beat and a ground-breaker in his own right...a truly awesome and versatile drummer...don't believe me? check out his long, long list of credits, including jazz, rock, gospel...you name it!
I have played drums since 1970. When I first heard Steely Dan's Aja I asked myself, "who is this amazing drummer"? I was hooked from that point on. To this day, regardless of how hard I try, I just cannot put the soul into the Rosanna groove like he did. He was one of the greatest drummers in modern music. His death was a great blow to millions of loyal fans. Toto would not have been half the bad it was without him. Rest in Peace Jeff
I'll let you in on something- don't know Jeff's beliefs- assuming some G-dly influences@home or someone. Anyone, regardless of history,HERE, if in the last minuites of death,& moments after, CALL out the name "Jesus, help me" I need you. He will take your hand & carry you out of the crossroads between heaven & hell. His Name Alone, will Save you. Trust me!!!!even at the very interval, many don't,they curse him as they enter Hell. Too proud&bitter.Beleive NOW. rewards will come later.
Many get hook, if true,.Loving people all over can get hooked. I';m sure if true, Jeff hated it. stuggles. regrets,. If not true. excuse my words.Jeff was extemly gifted ,sensitive inside, held it back, as an Aries Born April 1, a doulble leader, as a Pieces MOON, tender, caring, endearing, Strong outwardly. Kind yet mood inside. This melancolly mood is what makes for creative skill. The Aries sun ,makes it happen. G-d Bless him.
I will get in trouble for this but yes, major coke head, check his drum clinic class on video and see it! Sweet sweet man and gone wayyyyyyyyy before his time.
Tindrum what's the point of that comment? This is a tribute to his amazing talent. Does it feel good to say something negative about him for everyone to see, true or not? He has family and friends who have feelings who know a lot more than you about this beautiful man. Would you like someone to say something like that about your family member or friend? Check his ...... and see it! Is that what does it for you? This is a tribute to a beautiful person and a great drummer. Thanks a lot.
Very sweet tribute. Loved the rare pictures of Jeff on his 37th birthday and the ones of him as a baby. Music hasn't been the same since he left....at least we have the memories and music.
One of my favorite grooves by Jeff was the song "Gaucho" by Steely Dan. It was absolutely impeccable, as smooth as glass, sublime and tasteful. Check it out if you havent heard it.

I heard that he died from accidently inhaled cleaning solvents while cleaning something at his house. i know it sounds weird, cuz i thought it was from cocaine as well - but David Paiche commented on his death years later - after speculation. Whatever the case, we lost one of the best.
pestisides were used outdoors while a big wind came up and drenged his shirt ( lost by the corner office- yeah right- Dupont probably paid for the shirt) But cocaine was found in the system so a combination effect is possiable.

Oh you said it so right Csapulette, people just say stuff without thinking. These are human beings we're talking about with lifes of their own and thank God for the fact that TOTO is still around and playing and making the greatest music. I loved Jeff too and still do and listen to his playing. How sweet to see him when he was little and already into music, amazing.
You guys talk of replacement, do not forget that the world tour was already in motion with preparations when Jeff died, do not forget mouths have to be fed, the tour made sure Christopher, Miles and Nico were looked after finance wise, there is still a percentage of Toto music that goes to Suzanne and the children. Steve said that !
Replacing Jeff was and is never possible but Simon does a hell of a job trying and he is still with the band right ????
jeff porcaro show us his talent and all over the world his name won't be forgotten...he left us so much quickly. for me he will stay one of the best drummer i heard in my life.rest in peace jeff thomas porcaro
Bollocks! Why shouldn't they? Life doesn't stop for them just because he died. You think they should remain in stasis to pander to your fantasies? They're musicians and should keep playing til they drop. You think Porcaro would stop if it'd been Lukather who died?
idk... if I was in the band and Jeff died I'd would continue the band under a different name at least, in respect to an irreplaceable drummer. IMO they put his whole legacy at stake by just replacing him like that, and handing all his beats and the whole role straight over to phillips, and imo jeff's entire legacy was compromised when they did this.
His legacy is unchanged by what they do now, he's either great or he isn't. If they carry on with a great drummer like Phillips or if they were to use a lousy one people can always listen to the Porcaro material. He won't be forgotten simply because they continue without him.
yeah, I still think it was completely disprespectful. they should have discontinued like led zeppelin, or at least change their name. I heard toto (of the 80's) for the first time a few weeks ago and immediately I fell in love with Jeff's sound. I did a little research on the band and found out the great simon phillips is their current drummer, who I've heard a lot about I had never even heard of a "Jeff Porcaro" prior to my discovery of toto. Jeff Porcaro isn't forgotten, just unknown.
Yeah Simon Phillips is a hero of mine. Btw, search for Gregg Bissonette and you can see clips of him playing with Toto too in 1995 when Phillips had back problems.
no wonder you're so defensive of phillips. personally I don't like simon phillips that much. technically he's as good as almost anyone, but I love Jeff's sound and overall musicality so much more than Simon Phillips'. I also flat out don't like how Simon Phillips tunes his drums. doesn't sound good to me, but that's just my taste.
Actually I don't like Phillips as Toto's drummer and always thought he was wrong for them - it was the general principle of whether a band should continue or not that was my argument. However I love his sound! Specially with the Who which is another band people think he shouldn't have played with:-)
Very nice video! I really miss Jeff! My favourite drummer! I met him 1991, very nice cat, very varm person. I never gonna forget that day! Thanks for sharing this with us!
Thank you! This tribute is soooo beautiful! Great job...one to be very proud of.I did get teary-eyed.You also provided us with some rare photos. Jeff is smiling-I know it!
this is the best video with the best soundtrack!!! great photo...I think that "rethakul" was a very friend of Jeff!!!
I have some suspect from Buddyloverethakul...there'is only one special man in this world that use this name or another one that would be him. In anycase "why is the one that we love are the one that will never come home?" Jeff live in our hearts forever and in all toto works.
This video was incredibly moving! It brought back so many wonderful memories of this incredibly talented man. I was fortunate to meet him before a concert in the early 80's and told him how much I admired all his session work as well as what he did with Toto. He was very gracious and also shared a laugh to two with me during our brief time together. This was a moment in my life I will never forget.... May God bless Jeff Porcaro.
Excellent compilation of a man who have touch us all. Those pictures are very rare and cant help but to think. Trully a legend and a remarkable man. Thanks a lot for posting!
This was a very touching video for all of us.!THERE WILL BE NO OTHER LIKE JEFF!I can't find his playing among todays drummers.WE MISS HIM.... In this song it's Simon playing. You could find something from Jeff's sweet 16th note.Anyway it is excelent. Thanks!!
Buddy! This video made me cry. Really, I miss Jeff so much. He had so much left to give. And this says it all. I have thought about making a video like this myself, but I don't have nearly as much material as you do. I'm gonna check the video on the Network too, but I need lots of time to catch up after being away for four weeks:-)
Hey Buddy! I saw your original version on TotoNetwork ... I was amazed then, but this one's even better. Fabulous work! I like how the pictures are all "sepia"/b&w ... really goes with the mood. (And when I first heard "Bottom of Your Soul" on Toto99, I thought they'd written it for Jeff...)
Great man!!!

Replacing Jeff was and is never possible but Simon does a hell of a job trying and he is still with the band right ????

it's disrespectful how toto continued without him.
MikeyFlorida 4 years ago
Bollocks! Why shouldn't they? Life doesn't stop for them just because he died. You think they should remain in stasis to pander to your fantasies? They're musicians and should keep playing til they drop. You think Porcaro would stop if it'd been Lukather who died?
paviatomsk 4 years ago
idk... if I was in the band and Jeff died I'd would continue the band under a different name at least, in respect to an irreplaceable drummer. IMO they put his whole legacy at stake by just replacing him like that, and handing all his beats and the whole role straight over to phillips, and imo jeff's entire legacy was compromised when they did this.
MikeyFlorida 4 years ago
His legacy is unchanged by what they do now, he's either great or he isn't. If they carry on with a great drummer like Phillips or if they were to use a lousy one people can always listen to the Porcaro material. He won't be forgotten simply because they continue without him.
paviatomsk 4 years ago
yeah, I still think it was completely disprespectful. they should have discontinued like led zeppelin, or at least change their name.
MikeyFlorida 4 years ago
Yeah Simon Phillips is a hero of mine. Btw, search for Gregg Bissonette and you can see clips of him playing with Toto too in 1995 when Phillips had back problems.
paviatomsk 4 years ago
no wonder you're so defensive of phillips. personally I don't like simon phillips that much. technically he's as good as almost anyone, but I love Jeff's sound and overall musicality so much more than Simon Phillips'. I also flat out don't like how Simon Phillips tunes his drums. doesn't sound good to me, but that's just my taste.
MikeyFlorida 4 years ago
Actually I don't like Phillips as Toto's drummer and always thought he was wrong for them - it was the general principle of whether a band should continue or not that was my argument. However I love his sound! Specially with the Who which is another band people think he shouldn't have played with:-)

this is the best video with the best soundtrack!!! great photo...I think that "rethakul" was a very friend of Jeff!!!

Buddy! This video made me cry. Really, I miss Jeff so much. He had so much left to give. And this says it all. I have thought about making a video like this myself, but I don't have nearly as much material as you do. I'm gonna check the video on the Network too, but I need lots of time to catch up after being away for four weeks:-)
Cya on the network, man. And thank you.
