Luther is probably a modded Tubescreamer for sure but it sounds good. Hot Cake has its own unique sound and sounds realy good. Which version is this? A standard one with presence or is it the blueberry one?
I think Dr. Z amp produces a fine tone with any pedals. In the comparison of these two pedals, Hotcake sounds richer , smother and more detailed and the Luther drive is more powerful in middle range and distorted to me.
I've a Crowther hot cake and one of Jack Black's Luther Drives :). They complement each other nicely. Personally I wouldn't compare them directly, unless you happened to be the maker. Ah...
I'd say the hot cake has a better bass response, and it also sounds a bit more compressed. A true adtantage seems to be its drive range, that really goes from subtle overdrive to big distortion, and each step seems to be usable.
purenectar... there used to be 3 different models of hotcakes. normal, bluesberry & bass. There's only one now with internal switches to the bluesberry & bass modes. If yours is a bluesberry hotcake, i doubt if it'd have the switches.
He say's that the luther won in round 4 but it had it's drive and level at 1-2o'clock whilst the Hotcake's drive and level were only at noon. The Hotcake will roar when level and drive are cranked a bit past noon. My favourite posish! Luther drive is pretty darn cool though!
Both cool in their own regards. I did prefer the Hotcake in this comparo though. Had a nice creamy fuzzy distortion that still bit through pretty well until the really high gain stuff near the end. I'd say if your pickups are morelow end/muddy than the Luther would be the better choice, but if not, the Hot Cake is the way to go. Good stuff GMD, I'm loving these reviews!
I love you gearmandude but the Hotcake wins this shootout. It's got a bit more gain and on several tests you had to turn up your knobs to make it fair. I'd rather have the option of more then less. The Hotcake had this deep creaminess while the Luther had a more high end crunchiness. Both great and I'm sure I could use either depending on the circumstance.
sound similar and both very good but the crowther has a very fuzzy quality. that luther sounds great because it has something of an acoustic, less distorted quality when saturated.
I got a LUTHER from GDM because it sounds great. The response sounds pretty flat- doesn't mess with the frequencies too much. And the price is right. Yeah, it does have a nice 'transparent' quality. Cool. -doug
You can't go wrong. For overdrives, the LUTHER and OD808 are all I need. They're very different. I'm putting together a YouTube to show how the LUTHER enhances my Big Muff Pi.
Paul Crowher was a member of Split Enz, A New Zealand band. He creates the Hotcakes & deals with customers directly. Popular with some big names. Good post thanks.
I think the hot cake is slightly smoother and rounds up more nicely. Luther works better in the leads tho.

I love the Hot Cake in the higher gain settings, but not so much when just needing a little extra push.

I'm pretty sure that Les Paul wins this shootout.

Hot Cake - a little more transparent and trebley the rounds 1-3. Has more gain, but the Luther wasn't designed as a high gain pedal
Luther Drive - a little more fuzzy sounding around the edges, the final tone sounds amazing!

I own them both. Two different pedals buddy. Too different period.
And I don't have a problem as far as mid-hump with the Hot Cake, as someone mentioned.

I prefer the hotcake because of its drive range...it sounds like a fuzz at higher levels!

wrong. The switch is by where the battery is. Unscrew the back/bottom and you'll see the little black switch..

I liked the Luther Drive better. While the Hot Cake is "ganier," it also colors the sound a LOT...very, very mid-rangy.
The Luther Drive does not color the sound; add to that that you don't need as much gain as you think, and you've got a great pedal.
I'd buy the Luther before the Hot Cake.

Hotcake for sure. The Luther puts a blanket of compression on the sound while the Crowther allows the original round guitar sound through.

cool 'Luther Drive' gearmandude, nice and fuzzy in the right places.
thanx for the straight forward demo of the Hotcake... this pedal rocks and i can't wait to try one myself.

at higher gain settings definitely liked the Luther the best. Not so dirty, more of the guitar`s own sound showing through.. great job GMD!
