Maybe it's just me, but I've always thought the characterization of Bugs in this short really anticipates the later Chuck Jones version of Daffy Duck. There's the same misplaced arrogance, the same mounting frustration as things start going wrong, etc.
Sometimes I can imagine an alternate LT/MM history, in which Daffy becomes the unflappable winner and Bugs the angry loser.
Violence galore is the theme in most of these cartoons of the '40s and '50s. Beat-'em-up, shoot-'em-up, torture, and kill. Ironically, this was the era when theatrical movies were under the strict Hays code in which intense violence, strong language, and sexual situations were forbidden. These cartoons broke the barrier, and many of them originally contained graphic violence, nudity, and some swearing. What we actually see is the "tame" versions of these shorts, which are still very violent.
Great choice on Clampett's part at 2:02 . He has Rod Scribner animate as Bugs is showing his rage, which makes it all the more distorted; yet at the crucial moment when Bugs calms and says "and I will, too!" he switches to Bob McKimson's animation, which is much more calm and consistent.
I've been trying to be more aware of things like that, and of how directors would "cast" different animators for different scenes according to how each animator's particular strengths would serve the story.
You wouldn't think Scribner's wild rubbery stuff and McKimson's calm, solid stuff would work well together, but Clampett knew just how to conduct the two and have everything function smoothly.
OMFG! 7:33 Guns in a cartoon?! Surely that generation of Americans must have turned out clinically insane!!! No wonder they took these terrible cartoons off of the air!
Sorry about my sarcasms, but the ridiculous amount of political correctness now a days makes me freakin' ill.
These were real cartoons, unlike SpongeBob Homosexual-Undertone Pants. Just let your kids watch the episode where SpongeBob and Patrick enter a gay realationship to raise a baby clam 24/7 and see how they turn out.
@departed402 These cartoons have been back since March on Cartoon Network (if you get the channel). But I agree to an extent, because that end scene would always gets cut out when it airs, it happened in the 90s too.
@departed402 So you think Bugs and Daffy crossdressing and acting like women is not gay at all, but a silly exaggerated portrayal of a family in a modern-day cartoon is?
Go fuck yourself. You want edginess? Watch Regular Show.
The rabbits thinking Bugs is the turtle when he moves so fast and thinking Cecil is the rabbit when he's moving so slow! What a bunch of idiots! But Cecil said,"I told you rabbits aren't very bright." Yeah, not bright enough to see through those costumes.
Bugs apparently got hold of a "C" ration sticker (his secret weapon) which was only available to Doctors and other people with occupations with travel deemed essential to the war effort and were very hard to get. The "A" sticker that he also holds next to it was one that was what most people had. With an "A" sticker you only were entitled to 4 gallons of gas per week. A little WWII inside humor for the audience from Bugs.
Bugs: Toitle smoitle! I'm the Rabbit! Gang: You're the toitle! Bugs: Rabbit! Gang: Toitle! Bugs: Rabbit! Gang: Toitle! Bugs: RABBIT! Gang: TOITLE! Cecil: *munches on carrot* Yep, that's the toitle. I spell turtle toitle because that's what it sounds like their saying. RABBIT!
Bugs Bunny has evolved during the years. And some consider certain bugs as the best. Like the newest bugs bunny on cartoon network now adays a horrible mistake that should never have been made.
Okay okay. Cecil won. But hey, that's like what? One loss on Bugs' part, out of like 500 wins.

7:33 :O I had seen that ending only ONCE years and years and years ago on TV!
When I saw the cartoon several times later (with that scene edited out), I had actually thought I had imagined seeing them shoot themselves!
SO glad to actually find the uncut version (and prove I didn't imagine it)!
