In 1966 they gave a free concernt in San Diego as part of the pilot for their show. We were told when to scream and to look as if we were at a BEatles concert. Jan had his accident and they scrapped the show, deciding to go with 'unknowns' which is when they formed the MONKEES...it was originally supposed to be a show about Jan and Dean.
This video features some of the best musicians from the 60's--The Wrecking Crew--I see Hal Blaine on drums and Tommy Tedesco on guitar. I wonder if Carol Kaye was there playing bass?
Wow! They even threw in a Beatles number, "Hide your love away", and they did it well, too. Young adults were a bit more innocent back then, which is actually good, IMHO.
I saw them in '80 and during the spoken portion of "Dead Mens Curve" Jan forgot the words so he began to sing "Love Me Tender". Yes it was funny but I had to give him credit for coming back at all after that '66 car accident.
The blond girl looks love sick but I cant blame her for that. If I had been that close to Jan Berry I would have peed my pants, lol lol lol. Nothing wrong with sweet Dean just Jan is / was my favorite.
This is edited from the T.A.M.I. show. The First Concert film 1964. They had the top acts at the time. Go to wikipedia where you can read the bands and set list.
@SixtiesPopGold Thanks, a pilot for what? A TV show? Sure looks like it was a real concert. The complete footage must be out there somewhere..Another ?? who is the girl on the cover of Popcicle?
Just finished "When We Get To Surf City" by Bob Greene (Chicago Trib/Esquire columnist) and really enjoyed it. It's about his time as a guitarist and backup singer with Jan & Dean's band off and on between '94 and '03, A wonderful way to keep the summer of 2010 alive just a little longer.
