@GarbageRock Not a complete asshole, he was one of the first major influences in the American black rights movement. Apart from that I think he was an asshole.
I was at one of Randy's concerts in the mid-seventies with my best buds. Just before the line, "Go on and love me, I don't care", my friend, Kim, (who wasn't as clued in to Newman as some of us) yelled, "I love you Randy!!!!. Hilarious. Love it.
Confessions of a music geek: I'm reading Randy's Newman's Bio. (American Dreams) and lovin' all the back stories to all the songs. Never knew this was written about Frank Sinatra for Frank Sinatra. But Frank rejected the song.
"I was gonna make this solo more exciting, but for television I had to calm it down a little"--- LOL! Didn't he also do "Rednecks" on this show? He didn't calm THAT one down a little if he's concerned about what will fly on TV!
@mythillogic well when he did this it was a different time and the word he used in the song rednecks was acceptable in those days sadly enough.. Today it's like people saying black folks on tv. He wasn't trying to be racist in the song but simple minded people took it that way..
I really can't stop of listening to this song. I have thought of a million coverages our band can do but this is unique. An Andy Warhol and a Woody Allen combination... Fantastiko!
They are of the same generation. Newman feels comfortable behind the piano. Dylan uses it as an instrument to compose on. That's good but it's a performance instrument.
@grainofsandfan -- I agree with you about Dylan, it would be great to see him play some more piano. I imagine you like his 'New Morning' album; if you haven't heard it, go get it immediately. GREAT album, my favorite Dylan. I had never thought about it, but it is kind of similar to Randy Newman's stuff in some ways.
20 oscar nominations.... i think that says it all

A very underrated singer/songwriter. His dry lyrics are brilliant! Love him!

Wish Dylan would sit at the piano and sing.
They are of the same generation. Newman feels comfortable behind the piano. Dylan uses it as an instrument to compose on. That's good but it's a performance instrument.
Get with it, Bob. You can do it. You can.
