Her first album........produced by Dwight Yoakum's guitarist and recorded in California. Joy Lynn White and Jim Lauderdale on background vocals, Lucinda Williams' band playing back-up. Then she went to Nashville and got hooked into the pop country scene. Ah, if she'd only stayed true country...........I love her voice and rate her up there with Martina McBride and Patty Loveless.
I got the cassette single (who remembers those?) of this song for free, I think, and WORE IT OUT, waiting until this album was released. I remember going to the record shop immediately after school, and buying the CD the Tuesday it was released. The album definitely delivered on my expectations. It is solid, and remains one of my all time favorite albums to this day.
you are correct, when asked what the meaning of country music was to him, he replied, it's just three chords and the truth.
Later on Harland Howard repeated the quote in front of a Gibson executive and that executive liked the quote so much he had Gibson build Harland a Gibson j200 with only three frets in the cowboy position. .
An all-time classic. I still think her first album is her best. And the quote from Harlan about "three chords and the truth" being what makes a good country song is just a fantastic idea for a tune.
wow i didn't know this song was so old......i just heard this one tonight on the radio (Go Country 105 in Los Angeles!! woot woot) and i think i assumed that since i am familiar with the majority of Sara's stuff, this must be a new song because i was NOT familiar with this one. Beautiful!!!!!
Most will not know but after Sara released this single Nashville said she was too country and just that fast her music career almost ended. I remember when I first heard this song. I fell in love with her instantly. She is a great talent and Nashville and bite me.
golly geez, slap batman, what a voice, oh yeah and what a beautiful lady. i've not heard this in quite along time, thanks. I think I love this lady, I better check with my wife first, though?
I sang this song in a High School Talent show! This is the most heartfelt song I have ever heard! If country music could still be like Sara, Dottie West, Kitty Wells, George and Reba!
Sara has been my favourite country singer for awhile and in my opinion, this song is one of Sara's best. Her voice is stunning, as are her looks! I prefer some of her older tunes to her more recent work, but new or old, she is great. If you get a chance, check out her version of Imagine That - outstanding!!
You said it. I think this is the most genuine country song Sara sings. Too bad she doesn't sing them anymore. She does have a beautiful voice well suited for singing country.
I have to say that country is not my favourite music, but when I do listen to it, I prefer real country to "today's country" which, for the most part, is just bad pop music with big hair. Give me Marty Robbins, Johnny Cash, Emmylou Harris and Lyle Lovitt any time. This woman is a bit "twangy" for my taste, but it's a good song with superb musicianship.
The Country Radio stations are a racket, there are some great songs just like this one and they never gave it a chance. They feed the public a bunch of BULL SHIT! and they say this is country and you will listen to what we play. This is pure Country, not what the Radio Stations play. I love this.
OMG!!!! You have NO idea how happy I am to see this! This was my absolute *favorite* song back then, and I lost that cd years ago. Wow! THIS is what country is all about!
umm so i just realized that three chords and the truth is under the RCA label while all her stuff after is RCA NASHVILLE so maybe since her youtube channel is mannged by RCA Nashville they don't include this...too bad!!
I just wish she woulda made a video for "the week that the river raged".....It's on this record.......its a killer song......I would love to see her either perform it live...or as a video!
The song was partially written by her ex husband and there is a battle between them and she won't sing it live, by request or re-record. The reasoning behind it is still a mystery, My thought is it may be too painful for her to sing it.
Classic stuff, thanks for posting. I don't see why this song and the album didn't do better on the charts. Doesn't matter I guess, Sara made it big anyway.
Lord, I love this song. I heard it the first time when Sara sang it on the great but short-lived George Jones Show. I've never heard her do anything as good as this since then. Thanks for posting it.
I live on the mason dixon line. Not a northerner nor a southern guy. But now I know. I love a mountain twang!!! I believe heaven is gonna be a lot like the south, full of sweet people with a twang. lol
The best Sara Evans song ever. Her voice is just amazing whilst the Harlan Howard's comment that a decent country song is just "three chords and the truth" just makes such a brilliant line for a song.
We do have it! Be course I write it... Only problem is the right persons don't listen to them.

It's a great song, she was really genuine before she sold out.
She said the "voice on the radio, sweet and low" part is a reference to George Jones.
At least that's what she told him on his TV show .
