Ken's book "Out of Our Minds" changed my perspective of the world and changed my life. He is truly an inspiration, and I can't get enough of his work.
what he saw, most parents/teachers did not. that might be reason why some of us walk trough life like they are in someone else's skin and afraid to be what they always wanted
I've always hated the education system, thinking about how it only produces robotic beings.... Now after hearing this man's righteous words, i completely have a new sense of realization. I'll keep at it in earning my degrees and such, But i'll have this speech in my mind so as not to lose my mind really.
This man is a genius. He said just about everything I needed to hear. See, my mother is very adamant about me expressing myself, and trying to make use of my passions and hobbies as a career because she believes that it'll be hard for me to survive on my own doing what I do (art, by the way). I really wish to get into graphics design or making comic strips/books like Stan Lee and Aaron McGruder did, because I have all these stories and characters I can't lose. Thanks for uploading this, Robert.
Home educators understand this very well... children need freedom to find out who they are, and what they are meant to be. Forcing notions about what they should be doing upon them is counter-productive.
this gives me entire new outlook on life basically everyone who ever told me different can go fuck themselves excuse my launguage but yea....=) =) =) =)
this is so true! I hated school, even though I did really good. and I couldnt wait for friday's which was the days that we had arts only for a fuckign hour. =/
He talks about some boring stuff, but I was hooked and listened carefully because he blended it in a perfect way, adding humour. Man, he has a grand talent for speeches, this man.
Everything this man is saying is what I've been feeling and thinking since I started to drift away from formal education. I love literature and art. I've always been lost somewhere in my own world, shunned for not paying attention. Somehow I always thought something was wrong with me. Thank god my parents didn't know what ADHD was. I'd like to see more ppl like him speak up about creativity the way he does, because people like me need it.
I always felt that music, arts and dance completed the way we took in the rest of our education. I hope that this video inspires more governments to maybe shell out some dough toward these programs. Even if funds are thight it's always worth it to know that someone passed all their subjects just to be able to do art like I did rather than not making it at all.
i couldn't stop smiling at the end when he said that she became a multimillionaire because of her "condition" and how now we just put people like her on medication and tell them to settle down. it's funny how society works like that, how society views many artists of all kinds as "problems in the system" when in all reality the artists are the ones who need to be allowed to flourish so that they can become successful and not to have their talents muffled with medication and theories.
if we could now make this happen, no doubt that the governing bodies behind education have not seen this... it's too late for me now since im at uni but i hope they get their act together quickly and act on this man's words, especially since my degree its gonna be pointless if every1 has a degree... here's to hoping
That was fabulous! My high school has some programs but they are going no where but down hill because of lack of funding and interest. It is my hope that things will get better. It is because of that situation that I grew up in that I am becoming a music teacher to help out where I have seen others go wrong.
It's so refreshing to hear someone feel the way I do about not just the educational system but intelligence and how there's different definitions and ways of expressing one's intelligence. Really something important to know is that if we don't learn from our past mistakes in history and in life in general, then we're doomed to repeat them by passing it on to our children and our children's children.
oh my..... so inspiring seriously... loved it i wish i've heard it sooner. i wish that my formers teachers had heard it.... thank you rob for post it here... this it's what i call public service.
I cant believe I have only just seen this. Every word he spoke was so true. I feel the education system is flawed. The high school I attended had basically no arts what so ever, you could take art but that was about it. No drama, no dance, It didnt even have a choir. Even with sports, It had a basketball team and a netball team, and the netball team was all the lasted. Heres hoping things change for the future.
Great speech. I'm glad I had great art teachers. I'm not famous or anything but I believe music, art, dance, etc. Should be in every school. I mean we all live on the media so why not endorse more people to produce it.
I think the arts always take a back seat to the content core classes, simply because for the average person, math, english, science, and social studies are just more applicable for the average job out there.. I mean if you're inclined artistically more than academically there are always performing arts school that will serve you better...just my opinion.
Brilliant. Absolutely awesome. If there wasn't choir in high school I would not have made it through. They almost had to cut it at one point but we fought back and got them to keep all of the arts. And thank God for that.
What the hell is this ?????? this crapppppp I HATE THIS SHIT...YOU THINK IM GOING TO SIT HERE AND LISTEN TO THIS SHIT ???? WAS THAT THE JOKE ON US? OH YOU SUCK
I go to an art university, and this makes so much sense. Everyone always pushed me to be academic, and I almost lost my drive to become a photographer/graphic designer. And people still think me going to art school is a way to slack off, but let me tell you, art school is about as hard as medical school. With less sleep, no right answers, and more caffeine. Just because you're an artist or creative, does not mean you're doing nothing with your life. This video needs to be posted everywhere!
This guy talks alot of sense. The Arts aren't taken seriously in a lot of schools, which is sad. I have always been interested in the Arts, e.g Drama and Film. But i have had so many people telling me i took the dumb subjects. I saw my cousins school performance today, it was all based on Dance. And they were all Amazing. The amount of effort and time they put into it deserves to be recognized just as much as anything else studied in school.
Finally someone speaking out on what I have been trying to tell everyone all along... I wish I could have shared with this with my dad 10 years ago...
!!!!!!!this idea will save the world and us if we will try to bring it to others who doesn't want to listen and keep their eyes shot.
i wanned to dance and draw too but my parents told me it's not serious and it's not a job and that i wont b able to make a career being a dancer or a painter and made me to enter the Pharmaceutical university! a lot of children in the world have the same situation!!! we have to do something!!!
It is so true what he says about degrees!! I am a Speech and Hearing Science major and I can't do jack sh*# with that degree until I get my masters in Speech therapy or my doctorate in Audiology. It kinda sucks. Luckily I know I love this line of work and I want to do it for the rest of my life. Robert, your videos are great, hilarious, and every other compliment you can think of, however, this is one of the best videos you have posted!!!
If I wasnt encouraged to be creative at home I would of never have been creative in school. Teach your children at home and they'll carry it everywhere.
this man is brilliant! its true what he says about lecturers being walking heads - i feel myself becoming more and more like that too. im glad im a science kid: education worked out for me. i'd hate to think how awful itd be if school had neglected what i was interested in.
As someone who was artistic and academic in school, I can relate to what this clip is saying. I am also a teacher. I know that in my own practice I will be introducing my students to as many different types of art as possible. This clip was shown to me at a staff meeting at an elementary school that I was working at. Rest assured that we in the education system are aware and doing something about it!
When Gordon Brown mercifully has a heart attack and while Cameron is making a fool of himself... slide this guy into number 10. I bet he can put the Great back into Britain.
hey... i too, am one of those who love acting! but my parents never allowed me to join performing arts & all... It's true... the creativity side never gets attention at all... this man is awesome... because everything he says is based on true experience... "nobody knows how god looks like" "They are gonna"... hehe...
i absolutely loved this speech... i was one of those students who loved the arts and hated math and science and english... and no not everyone has to dance through math class... but i think dance and the arts should be recognized more within society and valued like any other education..there are tons of ppl out in this world with amazing mind and creativity in the arts...not only with P.H.D's or masters degrees
Wow, I'm just finishing my Masters and on my way to become an university professor, and this got me really depressed. I think this guy is mostly right, but I wouldn't agree that our educational system is wrong in principle. I don't think everyone should dance as they should learn math. And I don't think our school is that effective on killing creativity. We still got dancers... our friend Rob is one of them. But yeah, makes us wonder.
he's absolutely right. about academic inflation, about the arts, about everything. i don't know how i could get through my academic classes without my painting and i know my best friend could not get through her classes without her dance. i can't imagine what it'd be like to not have those things, to not have been introduced to them. but like he says, most people aren't introduced to them, and it's a direct result of how schools are set up.

Flyonthewall, what's your problem? If you don't wanna listen to this video, simply go to another web page. Not that hard. I'm sick of these stupid negative comments. Gosh.
don't like it? don't watch. it's that simple. don't like his other videos? don't watch them either, and go get a better sense of humor while you're at it. clearly you need one.
okay first, this happens in monterey?? no way. i live in monterey and didnt know anything about this.
second, this is absolutely correct. schools do revolve around core subjects as they call it. although i am one of those people who dont have trouble with academics, i agree that schools strip away creativity. i used to be so artistic- dance, music, and art. now all i can do is write a grammatically correct paper.
thank god we have colleges to choose from to persue what we wish...
absolutely great speech and also very true i hope that a lot of people realize.....btw, this guy is funny, he can make people laugh unlike others who just talk and makes every single moment really boring
Im studying visual arts and education and they definitely have us think critically about the education system that were in, and finding out how rigid and restricting it can be. Also, how education is no longer for the sake of learning, but for the preparation of a future career. Teachers are also learnings, and the process of learning is a complex activity...

noodle089 3 years ago 2
Flyonthewall, what's your problem? If you don't wanna listen to this video, simply go to another web page. Not that hard. I'm sick of these stupid negative comments. Gosh.

Dude, chill nobody put a gun to your head and forced you to watch it.

don't like it? don't watch. it's that simple. don't like his other videos? don't watch them either, and go get a better sense of humor while you're at it. clearly you need one.

okay first, this happens in monterey?? no way. i live in monterey and didnt know anything about this.
second, this is absolutely correct. schools do revolve around core subjects as they call it. although i am one of those people who dont have trouble with academics, i agree that schools strip away creativity. i used to be so artistic- dance, music, and art. now all i can do is write a grammatically correct paper.
thank god we have colleges to choose from to persue what we wish...
great post

same. I'm a really good student but it annoys me when you can't think outside the box.

Spot on! I hated school, too. Now I know why and like to think I turned out pretty well in spite of it. :)

Great post Rob but it's Sir Ken Robinson (British author). Not Ted Robinson (NBC sportscaster).

This speech is so true, structured school is so repressive to creativity and it has too many boundaries.... Ted Robinson, freaking genius.

Im studying visual arts and education and they definitely have us think critically about the education system that were in, and finding out how rigid and restricting it can be. Also, how education is no longer for the sake of learning, but for the preparation of a future career. Teachers are also learnings, and the process of learning is a complex activity...
neway, this was helpful~ cant wait to see more of punchrobert videos though!
