Carl was/is/will always be a STAR. He anchored that band to the earth for all of his precious years, as long as he was up there it was gonna be alright. I think he looks cool up there without the constraints of the guitar, though his playing is missed and I wouldn't recommend it on an every-song basis. Thanks for the video :)
es buenísimo el look "me pongo los shortcitos y me voy a jugar al tenis, de ahí a tocar, de ahí a natación, de ahí al bowling". abajo los músicos drogones; al jardine tiene actitud!
@gailmckennag Carl did at lot of production work on that album, so the band used the title as a kind of "thank you". "Carl and the passions" was the name of Carl's school band before the beach boys.
@gailmckennag No, Carl and the passions (so tough) was a Beach Boys Album from 1972. Carl's solo albums were called Carl Wilson (1981) and Youngblood (1983). What you do to me is on the second one.
I saw the Beach Boys earlier in the same tour. When Carl sang his solo stuff all the Beach Boys would walk off the stage and he would perform with just the backup band.
BTW, was it after he started using coke that Carl started slimming down? I notice he looked in really good shape around this point, when he started using heavily.
LOL to this whole video, which was a nice example at the utter dysfunctionality of the Beach Boys both professionally and personally at this point. Brian wandering the stage like the fucking absolute nutcase he was at that point. Dennis looks about ready to drop dead from alcohol abuse. Carl though at least held it down. A very professional guy, and a really nice performance vocally. I think this is the first time I've ever seen Carl on stage without his guitar.
Carl gives a superb performance while anyone who's not a Wilson would be fatally distracted by one brother stripped to underwear and another on a busy mission onstage. This is a truly great song. I'm not one of those Carl-as-angel fans, but I have great appreciation for what it took to give this performance. Holy cow.
@alburtise I agree. Carl really held it together here. Brian showed his true colors of wanting to be 'just behind the scenes', but unfortunately done in front of the camera. And those aren't underwear Dennis was wearing - those are some short shorts. It was 1983 after all!
Love Carl...love this song! I think Brian and Landy were oblivious that he was performing..no one can be that rude intentionally! He hung in there though! Good job!
yeah, the stage environment was so similar to their own livingrooms and the sound of Carl's voice just sounded like a radio on in the background. Yeah, they were oblivious. :o)
Mike wrote good lyrics, but musically he was very ignorant. Because of him the Beach Boys of the 80's turned into a travelling oldies band instead of creating new music on their special high level. Carl was very frustrated about that and left the band in the early 80's to start a solo career. He had no success and came back. Sad. He should have tried it again. I'm sure he could have made it.
How on earth Carl managed to remain professional and not get distracted with all the comings and goings onstage, is a mystery to me. It says a lot for the man. Carl, you could do no wrong in my eyes. x
@Helen25243 You're right !!! Carl was great. Eugene Landy is in the left corner and has Brian walking back and forth. I would not have blamed Csrl if he just walked off
@BeachBoysGuy1 It just goes to show just how unprofessional this Landy guy was. Anyone worth their salt would have had some regard for what was going on onstage, he showed a distinct lack of respect for Carl. He should have been struck off for his dodgy dealings with the very vulnerable Brian, who had been brainwashed into thinking he was some sort of Messiah.
You're right. He was always a very diplomatic guy, the good spirit of the band. He kept it all together, even when he was sick. God bless you, Carl Wilson, for being Carl Wilson
What is this? Carl sings his heart out and is the only person with real stage presence. The rest of the band is lifeless. Brian walks around and ignores Carl, Mike "entertains" the bored audience with stupid gags. The fall of a star of burning creativity into a dark, lost abyss full of sadness.
Mike's car engine imitation at the end of this video is a priceless example of what an embarrassing idiot he became on stage by the '80's. The crowd is looking at him like he needed to spend a few months with Landy instead of Brian!
Looks like Brian completely lost it here and just went coco on stage walking back and fourth like the koopa troopas from Mario Brothers, untill Super Landy came in and gave him a dose of his medication.
I cannot believe how the band acted on this video. Brian walking back and forth, brushing past Carl as Carl reaches out his hand to him. Band members with their backs to the audience, just acting like this was a practice session or something. Poor Carl. He looked so awkward up there like he just wanted the song over with. He did a great job with it, though.

What the hell is Bran doing????

@claromarago
If you notice, Mike & Brian go behind the others on stage and consult with Eugene Landy...probably about Brian's meds or something. lol.
Brian is trapsing around as if he's oblivious to the fact that an audience is watching his every move. lol
Must have been awfully distracting for Carl trying to sing his solo. RIP - Carl.

@Okiemom50 Must have been awfully distracting trying to be a serious musician up on the stage at some of the Beach Boys touring years.
I saw Brian Wilson go sleep behind the speakers at one show in the 80´s.
