  • Trying to get people to appreciate avant garde jazz is like trying to "get" how you feel when you have an emotional reaction to seeing a film that noone else seems to have, because they themselves have never experienced that which the film evoked in you. Getting people to show respect to music they dislike/do not connect with, especially on youtube, is an exercise in futility. Best to ignore it. .. Groove on what you groove on, and that is good enough.

  • jajajajajajajajajajajaja what shitty music

  • This is like the Insane Clown Posse of Instrumental music: it is music by definition, but people dont enjoy it as such.

  • i miss suzie!

  • Actually this kind of music requires higher concentration than usual music, it is more a specialist affair. Some can be astonished by the technical skill of mr braxton, and some can make fun of this "experimental" music and wonder how we can make such a noise and been paid for this. I am more on the first side of these two situations but I understand that some people can find it boring.

  • WTH is Parker doing by the end.

  • Contrabass clarinet! Fantastic!! If only people would simply listen to the sounds rather than criticizing this stuff for not being something else.

  • WTF!!!!

  • Oh my god, WIlliam Parker plays the shakuhachi! That is awesome! He never ceases to amaze me.

  • you centric MF'S, the guys responding to other comments, should get back to listening. All of you all...

  • He's making those bird noises right?

  • 3. you should be clever enough and show your ignorance about reed playing: mr. braxton can do very difficult things in a wide range of reed instruments. very few people in the world have his same facility. Plus, he has a huge knowledge of jazz tradition. I am saying all this as a composer, a reed player, a jazz player, an improvisor, and because i had the oportunity to play with mr. braxton.

    so please show respect.

  • 2. the most money mr. braxton is making does not come from his records, which sell still very little, compared to standards of commercial music (please note here i am not intending "commercial" as "bad", it is just a different point of view in making music). Mr. braxton gets the most of his economical incoming from teaching at university and from concerts.

  • the first thing i have to say to those saying bad things about mr. braxton's music is that you guys should show respect to people before they are artists. I don't like, f.ex. jennifer lopez music, but i would never say that she is a bad person, or that her music is shit. i would respect her even if she's making a billion times the money mr. braxton is making.

  • all these people saying negitive remarks to genius show the socity we live in today. If a person plays a "ugly" melody it is considered crap. What a shame

  • close-minded people can have their opinions, the music exists and the walls of Jericho come tumbling down

  • Yes!! This is such an adorable complete performer, this is 21st century, impeccable technique & an imagination to match! Thank You for putting this vid up,

    Markus

  • Hamid Drake...dude is ridiculous!!!! fuck...

  • Ends too soon.

  • check the Cuarteto Impromuzak

    saludos

  • thank you!

  • I love to LISTEN as much as I love to play.

    PAUL.

  • Yes, Braxton plays the contrabass clarinet, a Leblanc model. He is great. Listen to the albums "In the tradition" (vol.1&2) to hear him play standards on the instrument.

  • Looks to me like Braxton is playing a contrabass clarinet.

  • A double-bass saxophone...harder to play than anything else.

  • No, it's a Bb contrabass clarinet.

  • beautiful .takes me to the amazon in an iridescent magic cape of humming bird feathers.

  • You nailed it, man. Amazonian. The low notes are the anaconda creeping through the wetlands.

  • It is my honor to say that Hamid Drake (on drums) is my father-in-law. Thanks to all of you for your comments. I'll make sure he sees them.

  • THANK YOU for posting this.

  • Anybody know which diagram this compostion has?

  • T-H=I.S IS S-H'I=T

  • Y.O-U A=R.E A'N I=D-I.O'T

  • and some people are still convinced that the only thing that's music is stuff they're used to hearing.

just because it's different doesn't mean it's not music.

  • Braxton will be in history books as a innovator (as a matter of FACT, he already is). Your top 40 tunes, well they never even made it on MTV. You are NOTHING! Nobody cares about your ignorant comments, so comment on Madonna, or something you understand. Because this is way OVER your head.

  • you probably dance to victor wooten---

    son!

  • i don't think this composition has a diagram. actually i think they are just improvising. plus mr. braxton does not just "diagrams" in his music. he calls different sounds and way to produce it called language music. plus there's the written music which is close to the traditional written music. and there's the ghost trance music which is made mostly of symbol. do some research if you're interested

  • The cbcl is awesome :D

  • did this trio ever make an album together?

  • Drake and Parker are such a brilliant pair with pretty much anyone I've heard them with. Their discs with Frode Gjerstad are especially searing! I wish I'd been at this show though.

  • real sound

  • Thank you for sharing this with world. I've seen Drake and Parker together a dozen times, but never with Braxton! Make me feel good all over once again...

  • Yes, it was a great concert. See the new video I uploaded!

  • This is SO COOL! Thanks man.

I've heard this same rhythm section play with Peter Brotzmann - it was incredible.
