in chilhood we sang this when it didnot rain.... our mother used to tell us to sing this song. she used to say if little girls sing this song then it rains... miss her and punjab tooooo.....
@NewZealandAri : The singer "Sukhwinder" is asking God for rain on his terrace. His heart dezires to blow with the wind coz his luck has brought pleasant times. He wants to spread happiness.
The song shows what happens in a typical " Big fat Punjabi Wedding ". Full of life, colors and joy.
there's no difference between punjabi's whether muslim punjabi, hindu punjabi, sikh punjabi............before division whole pakistan and indian punjab was one.........whole punjab was having punjabi muslim in majority, punjabi hindu & sikh in minority..........all having same culture & tradition ..only religion is different among all.......punjabi spoken language is spoken even before guru's in punjab....everyone has own script for writing....but spoken is common
kawa = crow, hes tellin the crow ..that he feels like dancing and singing tday coz all the luck and happiness surrounds him tday..he wants to fly like a bird..and wishing for it to rain..
@rohufish4 I actually didn't. I have always wondered what that could mean. One word sounds like 'reejaan' which means desires/wishes. But, I am not sure. I don't know what the next word is.
@rohufish4 The nights part has the implicit meaning that life is so full of brightness and joy that the darkness of the night seems unfamiliar. Now, with better Punjabi than mine could bust this translation:). The sound is a bit unclear, so I am guessing a bit of the lyrics. This seems to be the gist. I am not 100% sure though.
Like I said, to each his own. If you like your lyrics, go for it. You're clearly much more Punjabi than I am, so maybe you're right. To me the crow symbolism is not very appealing. No need to prove each other right/wrong, my friend, lets both enjoy the beautiful song in our own ways.
Like I said, to each his own. If you like your lyrics, go for it. You're clearly much more Punjabi than I am, so maybe you're right. To me the crow symbolism is not very appealing. No need to prove each other right/wrong, my friend, lets both enjoy the beautiful song in our own ways.
@rohufish4 :), It's all good if you don't find it appealing. I am just saying that the word in the lyrics is 'kaawaan' that's it:). Let me translate it for you, from what I hear it is: Sade vehre wajan shehnaiyaan ji, khushiyan nachdiyan ... (unclear) aayiaan ji, saariyan/kaliyaan rataan lagan paraiyan ji which, should mean that shehnai is being played in the backyard (lol), Happiness dances forth into our life, the nights don't seem familiar anymore.
You're welcome to think about black crows during a wedding if that gives you happiness, but I'm pretty happy with my interpretation - it fits the context very beautifully! To each his own.
@rohufish4 It's not about 'interpretation'. It's called getting the lyrics wrong. Someone has described the context beautifully a few comments below. You are free to be happy with your misinterpretation. Nobody's stopping you. Kawaan Kawaan is a boli. It's addressed to a crow- if you have any knowledge of Punjabi folk, you should know that this is a common invocation. Crow just stands for bird heret just makes sense lyrically and musically to say Kaawaan instead of kabootar or chidi or bateer.
@rohufish4 btw, it;s a frivolous assumption that I am happy to think of black crows at weddings. Anyway, I am not trying to convince you. If you wish to be ignorant about that part of the lyrics, go for it:). I'd rather talk about lyrics with someone who understands folk symbolism.
@rohufish4 btw, it;s a frivolous assumption that I am happy to think of black crows at weddings. Anyway, I am not trying to convince you. If you wish to be ignorant about that part of the lyrics, go for it:). I'd rather talk about lyrics with someone who understands folk symbolism.
the title of this song is almost universally misspelt and misunderstood. it is "gaavaan gaavaan" (nasal -aan end) which is the punjabi for something to the effect of "i feel like singing my heart out today" (gaavaan gaavaan, aj mera ji kardaa). "gaavaan" is the punjabi verb for "gaana" i.e. singing. some duffer wrote it wrong on the CD sleeve, and its become 'kawa kawa' - sounds like a crow cackling. the lyrics of the song are actually beautiful and joyous if you translate them properly.
@rohufish4 , He is saying "Kaawaan" not Gaavan:). I have heard this 8 times after reading that it was misspelt. In a lot of Punjabi bolis, references are made to crows and chidis and so on. It''s just punjabi folk singing. This is sort of reminiscent of a kaan (I am assuming you are punjabi) sitting on the chhat, in the monsoon. It makes more sense for it to be gaavan, but it is Kaavan. I am 110% sure. So, please don't be so confident about your (mis)assertion.
@rohufish4 He also says "Rabba Rabba mi barsa, saadi kothi daane pa" - daane pa is in reference to the Kaan (Kaavan), or throwing daane to the crow. You don't have to interpret it as the crow crackling. It's just imagery. A crow sitting on a banera:)
And, it's not LUT jaan naal hawaavan at any point in the song. It's always UDD jaan naal hawaavan. trans: I feel like FLYING away with the wind, not let the wind steal what I have??Come on!
actually there is a huge difference between indian punjabi and pakistani culture. even they way we speak punjabi is largely different. Bhangra, Giddah are all creations of sikh's during festivals in the indian punjab.
this is the irony of fate that all the punjabies from either side of border relate this song so deeply as their very own. punjabi culture has very deep and sound roots even after 60 odd years of separation almost every thing is done by the punjabies in the same way. there is nothing different in punjabies as long as the culture is concerned.
i think the problem is lack of exposure. media bans in either side leaves us unaware about each other specially in india where no pakistani channel i think is not allowed to go on air and pakistani film industry is almost dead. so they hardly get any cjance to know about pakistanies except what there media tells them. i personally follow the indian news papers online and find them quite piercing when they try to present pakistanies in one way only anyways.
yeah, true again but I do not agree with Indian media showing only dark side of pakistan... number of shows u see ppl frm other side of border performing and the other gud stuff they shw abt Pakis.... BUT I guess its abt things which common janta remembers MORE than this stuff....That stuff is boring...ppl getting closer etc.... its just not as worth of MASALA as watchin Atif getting insulted by judges or showing Mr. Zaid Hamid talking abt times of stone age...
watching Namastay London i hardly find any difference between 2 sides of punjabi cultures except openly drinking. every other thing and every character can be found easily in every punjabi house in pakistan too. Harbhajhan Mann's movies are watched here with families and really accepted as own.
Jatt people are the best in the world. Only the men drink. You are right though we are strongly advised not to drink but jatts aren't very religous, they are more into culture than religon.
i'm an american woman of color and i love this song...it is very soulful and always makes me want to dance and feel good. I admire the joy in the punjabi culture.

i completely agree with u ...i m proud to be a punjabi ...ppl here in canada often say that punjabis r the best looking ppl from south asia ...and oh man my mother tongue is soooo beautifullllllll
Today I wish to distribute happiness(my bounty) all around on the way, for my destiny has bestowed cooling shade(good fortune) upon me, today I feel like soaring in the sky.....
brilliant translation griffzen!!!! thanks a ton. Although i knew the meaning of the song, a few punjabi words were not clear. i think this is the only song which can make me close my eyes and dance like a mad maniac as if nobody's watching!
Today the beloved has arrived at my abode accompanied by flutes (seheniayan) Dancing and laughing..happiness has descended upon us. The dark nights have dissipated - (become strangers), now sing the songs to celebrate(commemoerate) the various festivities of the occasion (wedding), to your hearts content.
Kaavaan kaavaan kaavaan, ajj mera jee karda main udd jaan naal hawawaan
ke ajj meri kismet ne karr diteeyaan thandiayaan chaawaan....
The poet addresses the bird kaan (crow/raven), that he too feels like soaring/flying away with the wind, for destiny has bestowed a cooling shade upon him i.e good fortune
Rabba Rabba meenh barsaa, saadi kothi daane paa...
This song has punjabi folk base.
The poet asks for the bounty of Rain from the Almighty (a boon for the parched plains after harsh summers in semi-arid plains), so that his abode is filled with prosperity (symbolically - grain(daanae))
awesome! This is the second song ( Aaj Mera Jee Kardaa (Today My Heart Desires))on the album. I have the whole album on my site( h.t.t.p//hungayinlondon.multiply.c.o.m/music/item/1952

Ajj verae sajjan sehnaiyian ji,
khushyian hasdiyaan nachdiyan aayeaan ji,
sarian raataan lagann paraayeaan ji
Gaayo doreeya, reejaan bhorean
