Batavia(Jakarta) was conquered in 1619. Part of Sumatra, Kalimantan, West Java were added into VOC from 1801 until 1870. And the whole West Indies (currently Indonesia) was falling into Dutch hands between 1871 until 1942.

Indonesia is a country where there is basicaly everything. Indonesia is a very rich country. But the sad thing is that everything in Indonesia such as natural resources including oil & gas are given away by force from the Dutch and other foreign countries. When the Dutch step foot in Indonesia they took everything and the Indonesians have to work like crazy for them. Forced Labour. Basically guys if no foreign countries come to Indonesia. Indonesia would be great. No poverty. No corruption.

Don't know why, but the most of the dutch think, it was better under the dutch in Indonesia. But it wasn't! It was worse!! Indonesia starts with zero and the dutch always tried to split and rule after 1945. Right now Indonesia grows, even with all the problems a young country has. The economy is increasing , the educational level as well. So, it is much much better then it was ever under the dutch.

A bunch of problems waiting to be solved. But the progress is getting better from year to year. Our minister of enviroment is a Papuan :) The South Moluccans wants to stay in Indonesia, Aceh too :) Indonesia grows together. Uhh, nope.
The KNIL actually beat the Indonesians time after time in 1945-49, it was just too weak to control anything besides the cities because it was the post-war years and it was severely weakened.

The KNIL itself was by 1942 and ill equiped and untrained army, only 85,000 strong, if it had been equipped properly it could've beaten the Japs.

my grandfather been there. should post some pictures up. though against his own will just like 40% of the soldiers who had to go there because they were fighting against the indonesians who fought for their own. Unfortunately retarded people here still think dutchmen are bad.

You do know that the capture of Singapore was a huge bluff on the part of the Japanese, do you? It was a giant error on the part of the allies to surrender while they held 2.5 to 1 numerical superiority.

they are very meaningful. I was born and raised in Semarang, a city full of dutch history and culture. And I was always fascinated with these old buildings, wonder how they must have looked like when they were newly built and fully functional and occupied.
War certainly was not something pleasant to remember, but we all do suffer because of it. Let's not spread hatred and stop discussing about politic and religion here!

Nothing to be thanked to the japanese except their preparation of the sense of pride among indonesians. Of course more good things had been done by the dutch. If you look deeper on the history of Indonesia during the turbulent era, it was the dutch (government) in the netherlands who could not read where the wind blow after the japanese surrendered. The wars thereafter were an unnecessary waste of lives. Hope this wont repeat. Too bad that the Dutch must leave, but it was their choice too.

Lansanak thinks the Japanes were honest frank and brave and forgets about romushas. In WW2 in Java, between 4 and 10 million romusha were forced to work by the Japanese military. About 270,000 of these Javanese laborers were sent to other Japanese-held areas in South East Asia. Only 52,000 were repatriated to Java, meaning that there was a death rate of 80%.

what do you mean by thank you japan?. my grandpa said it was much better to live under the dutch colonialization instead of japan. even one of the indonesian founding father, Bung Hatta said so. unfortunately dutch didn't inherit good things as much as uncountable commodity had taken for his country. less indonesian speaks dutch after those long occupied. weird huh?

The Kingdom of Acheh is included in the agreements despite the fact that it has never been formally incorporated into the Dutch colonial possession. MrBurit, I think you got me wrong. Indeed Aceh people have shown an extreme courage and sacrifice in fighting the Dutch. Because of that bravery, the guerrila war never ceased. It kept going all the way to 1910. Dutch was very barbaric in conducting the war. For example, Van Heutsz (governor) ordered Colonel Van Daalen destroyed several villages, killing at least 2,900 Acehnese, among which were 1,150 women and children. Dutch losses numbered just 26, and Van Daalen was promoted.

Yup, I can take that. That was Kuta Aneuk Galong. But the Dutch killed more than that.The British authorize the Dutch to invade Acheh, possibly to prevent French annexation. This begins the Acheh War, which lasts INTERMITTENTLY from 1873 to 1942. It is the longest war ever fought by the Dutch. And also costing them over 10, 000 lives.

In the Netherlands at the time, van Heutsz was considered a hero, named the 'Pacificator of Aceh' and was promoted to become governor-general of the entire Dutch Indies in 1904. A still-existent statue of him was erected in central Amsterdam. By 1904 most of Aceh was under Dutch control, and had an indigenous government that cooperated with the Dutch colonial state.

The only part where the Dutch able to entered was Masjid Raya. And they have burnt down the building. However, the Achehnese fought it back. They have killed their General. I have set my foot there. Mr Burit, the smart way to learn history is to get the fact instead of putting own hatred and emotion into the history. For example, Marsuse lead by Colonel Macan consists of Halmaheran, Ambonese, Javanese, Bataknese and even some Acehnese. Java war(Diponegoro) fought Dutch soldiers coming from Makasar, Halmaheran and Ambon. Padri War (Imam Bonjol) fought Dutch troops component lead by Sentot Ali Basyah (a javanese who later changed heart and fought side by side with Imam Bonjol).

Indnesia is very democratic now. Compared to countries in the region such as Sngapore and Mlaysia, Indnesia has much better freedom of speech. Yes we lag behind from the economics point of view due to the legacy of Suharto's 32 yr of corrupt gvernment. However, we struggle on our own with pride to overcome such economic challenge. Now let me ask you sounynoma, in those 350 years during Dutch occupation, wht did u Dutch bring besides human right violation, human degradation, and wealth robbery?

350 years? who was occupied by who? Only Jawa island was occupied by the Dutch that long. The rest they kept fighting. The sad thing is Jawanese was used by the Dutch as the soldier to attach the other island. But they could not even get into Acheh. Today, Jawansm, once was soldier of the Dutch, became the Boss in Indoensia, now wonder people don't like 'em.

Mr. Burit, please something that you surely know. Only Java island occupied by Dutch that long? Here are some facts: Amboina was captured by Dutch(from Portuquese) in 1605. Batavia(Jakarta) was conquered in 1619. Part of Sumatra, Kalimantan, West Java were added into VOC from 1801 until 1870. And the whole West Indies (currently Indonesia) was falling into Dutch hands between 1871 until 1942.
