  • notice how the 2 leads are more attractive than everyone else? I have Autism and I find this a typical hollywood approach to a big issue. At least rain man felt more realistic

  • Comment removed

  • The characters in this movie covers the full spectrum of autism. Only the two main characters are aspergers. Autistic people are NOT retarded. Go watch the movie before you guys throw potshots at it.

  • asperger is having SOCIAL PROBLEMS, theres no retarded things. And even, aspegers are like advanced at school because they are like in their world so they don't realy have time to have fun with others because they have this social problem that can't let them having friends and people think that that makes them retarded. NO FUCKING WAY! the retarded one are the ones that sais they're retarded because they don't even know how they fell.

my brother has aspeger and its not retarded at ALL

  • @G0lfer4EVER Thanks but, AS normally have difficulties with social contact but that doesn't mean that we can't have friends, or have a good time with others. And there are also AS's that aren't that advanced. Look at me, my IQ might be "127" but I'm just doing mavo (Average secondary school in the netherlands) and I'm highly dyslexic .Every AS is different and that's also why Asperger is such an interesting Syndrome :)

  • I saw this online I thought i would be a good movie, but by watching the clips I'm kinda perturbed. How can you cast a bunch of nerotipicals to play aspies, the actors prob all watched rain man to train for it and then add some cliche mental retardation traits or "crazy" tics, this is offensive... were not retarded, were the software engineers and scientists of the new world.

  • Quite exaggerated, but on the mark in some respects. I have been an "aspie" all my life. Always knew something wasn't quite right, but I only found a name for it about 10 years ago.

  • fuck this movie! u dont have to be a retard to have aspergers. this is so wrong

  • I like Isabel and Donald characters in MOzart and the Whale the movie is over exaggerated however, It is one of my favorite movies. I have Asperger's syndrome and have some talents that Isabel has I don't have her temper. However, I do have a loud nervous laugh. I do talk kind of loud sometimes and speak my mind. I love art and have a talent in it kind of like Isablel. Also I love animals I was obsessed with cats for many years later the obsession went to other animals too.

  • i really want to watch this movie.. it's still out in the market?

  • this movie is so freaking sad dude

  • It's been a while since I saw this, but I thought the support groups were for people ALL over the Autism spectrum, but that both our main characters happen to have Aspergers specifically..

  • Also, It's Trip Fontaine from the Virgin Suicides!

  • I have Aspergers and I don't like the impression the media gives that everyone with Aspergers acts alike or has some usual tendencies in common. Most people don't even know I have Aspergers unless they know the signs and know me long enough. Others are quite obvious. But Aspergers isn't just a verbal autism, it's quite complex and can't be given one all identifying label.

  • @MasterAdam100 I've dealt with some strangers before that have thought behind my back about why I'm so slow which is insulting if you ask me

  • beautiful movie, really, simple and emotive. just real.

  • The Book is better more detailed. But the movie is good too

  • Most of my friends have AS including my ex girlfriend that is now my best friend (similar to the movie's plot in what we are going or have gone through). We are planning to watch it together in hopes it might help us understand ourselves better

  • I have a son with aspergers..wouldnt it be nice if they actually used people with AS to play the parts. It could be done-but I dont think anyone would want to try. The movie tries to "explain" too much without realizing you cant pigeon hole Aspergers into such a tight explanation. Did they really try? Or did they just attempt to turn a profit ..I dont know what my son thought_he couldnt sit long enough to watch the movie..

  • @Zimmie63

I would have loved to have played one of the girls with AS, as I am a girl with AS. I agree though, sometimes Hollywood directors really don't seem to know what to do with the characters, so they make them seem nuts. Then again, I have never come in contact with anyone else that has AS, so maybe some of it is true.

  • @Zimmie63 maybe this movie wasn't so much for the people who have Aspergers but to educate the public on their inherent humanity..

  • @Zimmie63 Yes ,that would be a good idea and it would make the movie a much more realistic and less stereotypical. But the only problem is that People with AS can be a little bit "difficult" and handeling a few AS is allready difficult for people that aren't trained to handle with Autistic people, so a whole filmset full of AS's would be really hard to handle.

  • I have not yet seen this movie, but my little brother has AS and I think it can show me what he'll be like. They probably won't hit it on the nail because people who have autistic friends or family know what it's like to live with one. It is Hollywood so it will either be dramatic or dull.

  • Very emotional and deep movie with brilliant acting. Josh Hartnett, Radha Mitchell and many others did a great job.

  • I haven't seen the movie, just the trailer. Are all these people supposed to have AS, or just the main 2 characters? Because the other people in the trailer seemed a little high-strung and...er...mentally challenged a little. (Can I say that? I don't mean it to be offensive.) Especially that big woman with the scruffy hair. I would never go on and on like that about a completely random subject unless it came up in conversation. Especially to someone I'd never met before.

  • @Amy2838

eh,, actually it's a group of people having the syndrome.

  • Okay, I went to netflix and watched the movie online. It was okay, but I thought they missed the mark for portraying true asperger syndrome. I agree with another poster who said the characters seemed more like high funcitoning autistics. (The only characters who were supposed to have aspergers were the main two characters...the others in the group were said to be autistic.) But even that wasn't really "right" either. They tried, but just didn't get it right. Oh, well. At least they tried.

  • My only real complaint abou the writing in this movie, are the lines where they prattle on aloud at the group meetings, about their symptoms of Aspergers. For no reason. The other members of the group already know the symptoms, I'm sure, so it's obviously meant for the uninformed in the movie audience. Which comes across as kind of distracting .. awkward and strange. Nobody really talks like that in everyday conversation. I prefer the more natural conversations movie better.

  • i really need to see this movie. When I found out I had asperger's syndrome, I felt useless and my confidence dropped

I do have social problems, have wierd obsesions and repetitive routines. I just need to know how people cope with AS

  • @jdofdoom Its a really good movie i just watched it yesterday

  • @jdofdoom You have to believe in yourself and not give up. Lots of people like weird people...

  • @jdofdoom, just be yourself. :)

  • @jdofdoom I would not choose this movie as an example of coping with aspergers. For a Hollywood film I think it is quite accurate but very overreacted.

I have AS and I have learned a lot from a good social training. Not the kind that teaches you to say hello/goodbye/yes and no. But something managers use to improve their social skills at work.

  • @jdofdoom Logic. Make body language your obsession. Try to understand why people do the things that you don't understand. Understand why you do things neurotypicals don't. You are actually much less likely to lie, and a boon to society. Almost all geniuses had disorders. Find something you are good at, and excel.

  • @jdofdoom man, im kinda sad. i was told i got it like 2 days ago. and i feel like shit :(

  • this movie isnt about aspergers, its about High Functioning Autism they screwed it up, theres a big difference between the two.

  • AS is high functioning autism. i know i have it

  • I have Asperger's too. I do have a lot of social problems and it made me totally obsessed with SpongeBob SquarePants.

  • Me too. I've seen every episode, my stranger that is a best friend to be. =]

  • I used to see my aspergers syndrome as a hindrance but, now I see it as a privellage

  • Hi have aspergers too i was DX at 14 and this is an awesome movies one of my faves :)

  • I wish I didn't have it.

  • Why?

  • Maybe because he irritates the shit out of everyone.

  • Well, at least people are becoming aware of AS, which is something. I was only recently diagnosed, and I'm 45.

I can't really relate to the severity of the manifested conditions of the characters in this movie. They're much more extreme than the AS I have. More like high functioning Autistics than real AS.

Now that I know what it is I have, its not real consolation. I still have it, and it bothers me a lot. I don't relate well to my wife or children, and that's so very very bad.

  • i tried to watch this clip but i just couldn't get through it...this film is just badly made. people who actually have ASD should make a movie about it.

  • Although these covers real issues in AS, the two main actors are simply very unrealistic. Its very difficult for AS people to integrate their personality and life aspects, let alone talk about them to newcomers. It is annoying that AS people should be presented in this way as it does not really show AS as a condition that can be very difficult to live with, it presents it as a way of being that is merely interesting (not difficult per se) and somehow trendy. Thats only partly true.

  • I love having Aspergers, regardless of how hellisly difficult life can get.

I believe the positive aspects outweigh the negatives, which are sometimes only negative if that's how they're perceived by the individual and those around them.

  • Hey cool i also have aspergers syndrome

  • This is a decent film and portrays Aspergers pretty well in some respects...

It is, however, a bit over done in parts. That's Hollywood for you I guess.

One thing to take into account of course is that, like people without AS, there are many different types of people who have it, and it can manifest very differently in each of us.

I'm a very creative person who lacks concentration on my specialist subject - music. I find that irritating and debilitating, but I love the things it does.

  • I love this movie

  • I love this movie it's ssssooo.... sweet:P

  • Why are some people moaning about it? The main thing is that they made this film because its based on a true story and also trying to get Aspergers noticed. As I have Aspergers i loved the film and to me its the best ever!!!

  • I just saw this movie recently. I have AS but I don't act like anyone in this movie.

  • they can't make a movie that represents every kind of person with AS. there might be some people with AS who ARE like them.

  • You're right, but no case is the same, some come close, but they are all different.

  • I liked this movie; however it was a little disapointing.

  • The movie is cute..but poor in demonstrating demonstrating aspergers.

  • oops...didn't mean to type that twice lol.

  • The literal language thing gets me at work, every time. I take my boss very literally, and when I do exactly what she told me to do I often get into trouble because I truly didn't understand what she was trying to convey.

I am still single, and I'm not a spring chicken.

  • this movie is so stereotypical! I am a female aspie and my friends and I do not act like they did in the movie! You can't tell a person has AS just by looking at physical stuff. I could relate to some of the problems they were having so it is not all bad.

  • loved this movie

    josh did amazingly

  • i know right?! I watched the faculty because of elijah wood and i fell in love with Josh! Then I loked up every movie he's ever been in and the only one I was aloud to watch was this one! I was mad but it was okay. I watched this movie at least five times a day! I memorized like everything! He accually made me obsessed with numbers! I'm always dividing stuff by 3. In my head that is, it's quite strange. Anyway, JOSH ROCKS NO ONE CAN BEAT HIM! well- DAVID TENNANT ROCKS JUST AS MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • bad filme

  • We aspies take figures of speech and some idioms literally, not everything literally. We do have to think before we speak that's all, that might help us at times. I do sometimes say the wrong thing at the wrong time.

They should have hired actors with asperger's syndrome for more realism.

  • I am an amalgamation of the GIrl and the Boy that fall in love here. I was diagnosed at 34 if you want I have some AS videos on my youtube. I loved this movie. It showed AS for what it is. How everyone reacted differently etc.

  • Thank you for making this movie and shedding light on Asperger's.

We have a son who lives with this everyday and tries his best each day and for that I am very proud of him and very thankful for this movie.

    Thank you!

  • I am so glad they made this movie!

    And in Spokane.

    Awesome!

    :)

  • filmed in spokane, wa! woo hooo

  • I like this video so much. Unfortunately, I have never seen this movie, but want to see as soon as possible. I didn't know that autistic people can feel love, they're so cute. I'm interested in Autism / Asperger Syndrome. The part from about 03:56 is lovely. Thanks for sharing it!

  • i know some of the things in this movie are stereotypical but i thought it was good on the fact that two people with aspergers could be in a relationship and stuff i hate movies that act like because you have a mental disability you cant be in a relationship or anything

  • Somo of them look like Jim Carrey, does Carrey have asperger?

  • hey the movie came out 12/12/06 rite? well, there are two twelves and twelve divided by 2 is six, im not copying donald i just the same obsesion

  • um...how do you tell if u r an aspie without taking any tests, or can u? i dont want to be mean by asking it in any way, seriously

  • I thought this movie was supposed to be good? The way this is protrayed...really stereotypical. Makes me wonder exactly who they've seen that acts like this.

It's like they take every stereotype they can and projected into two people. Not every aspie does EVERY autistic thing. Some of this is way too fake to not be funny. When will we get a movie that portays things more accuratly? Maybe we need real aspie actors??

I'm slightly miffed i have to say.

  • I agree with you. I'm aspie and I'm not like anyone of the actors.I'm now totally normal because i fought much to be like this.

  • @SumireIsrafel I watched the whole thing. It's really horrible. It's like Natalie Portman's character from Garden State giving a very confused PSA about Aspergers while on acid.

  • wtf? if you got as you got some problems, but your high functioning, its severe but less noticeable. whats wiv the barking n weird laughing. i h8 this depiction

  • wtf? if you got as you got some problems, but your high functioning, its severe but less noticeable. whats wiv the barking n weird laughing. i h8 this depiction

  • I was diagnosed aspergers a few years ago. This is a terribly backasswards portrayal.

  • Some of this does strike me as quite stereotypical but some of it really hits hard.

  • Brilliant

  • This was such a good movie, I loved it!

  • Does anyone know where I can download this in a torrent or watch it for free? It looks amazing.

  • i hav aspergers. hell on earth...

  • i know it is painful sometimes, but if you try to make things better for yourself, they will work out in the end.

    JUST DO NOT LOSE HOPE!!!

  • This is to sterotypical.

  • really agree. asperger is not like that.

  • how they put the actors to constanly quote eachother after a typical autistic standard makes it look more like a fictional documentary then a movie!

  • Radha Mitchell is fantastic!!

  • I love this move it's my all time favorite

  • me too!!!! my all time fav!!! :D I would marry Josh Harntett's character in a second!

  • I think that the two main characters sort of force their mannerisms too much. It doesn't feel natural to me but the minor characters seem more natural.

I was very impressed, though, with "What''s Eating Gilbert Grape" and their portrayal of the autistic boy in that movie. Why did Leonardo DiCaprio regress from a great actor into such a poster boy!!!??

  • I am not sure how people think I act toward them, some don't even know I have Aspergers until I explain it to them and some people can see it right away.

  • I'm an Aspie myself & i'm very thankful for this movie!...

    Luv Natalie...

  • i would think anything that helps people understand even a small amount of what someone with and ASD has to cope with would be a good thing...

and previous comments mentioned the differences and thats true because no 2 people are truly identical...

i could only wish my children were high functioning and could communicate to the levels shown in this clip

  • Wow! I can't believe the number of negative (or pointless) comments on this video. I'm a high functioning autistic (not AS, though), and I found the movie's portrayal quite heartwarming. Sure even other autistic people get that we're all different, we all behave differently, some of us pass better than others (by reading my words, you might think I'm quite on the ball, but in real life I'm so much like it Donald it was scary to me). Thanks a million for sharing this.

  • stop lame chain letters

  • i have A.S

  • to those who say the actors' portrayal of autism is inaccurate, there are all different kinds of autism and savant syndrome and many different degrees in both. I know several people with aspergers and they all act differently. Its virtually impossible to portray a syndrome in genereal. so get off ur soapbox and if you dont like the movie or the actors' portrayal of Asperger's Savant Syndrome, then deal with it.

  • I'm an NT advocate for my lovely aspie wife. I second bookworm2010's comments. The movie is all about the writer, the producer, and the actors and their attempt to make a difference. I know it is diffucult, but you might ask what it cost them, the writers, producers and actors, to do the movie, act the parts. If you have a few perseverations left over, devote one to figuring out what it costs in psychic capital to say "I love you."

  • This is actually a really great movie, perhaps not for everyone, but for those who want to watch something with meaning instead of mass produced shit, then weatch this film!

  • @lewec :D

  • For a better view on autism, watch Star Trek and pay attention to Spocks social blunders... best example I ever saw. Forget this Hollywood crap.

  • MICHAEL TSARION!!

  • this video made me want to puke, is nothing like my husband or my daughter and totally misses the point.

  • This clip is funny if not totally accurate. Some of us Aspies that were diagnosed late in life and have been "passing" for years not only identify when we are acting "weird" but before we were diagnosed that is what we called it. Now we call it having an Autistic moment. We always think differently but we can act more like the NTs most of the time.

  • i like it it is sad and it reminds me of my friend that saddly was killed last year because of reading chain letters and now that you have read this eshe will slowly kill you by everytime you hear a ring in your ear she will make your life shorter by a day post this on five different vidios to be saved sorry

  • oh well im dead

  • I want this movie. IT's so emotional.

  • This movie disappointed me. I was really excited that some one had made a movie about this. And for an instant i thought that it would help to give normal people a better understanding. But its so warped and as stated already, over exaggerated. It turns us into circus freaks, and pushes us farther away from normal people. We are not that different, we just think and act on a different level, and sometimes we confuse normal people, or ourselves because we don't quite click.

  • You can be AWARE of it, I am aware of my aspergers, but when it kicks in, I don't think "thats aspergers" i think thats just me. It's hard to stop being yourself, what this video shows is that they know the issue, but it will never just go away, it's about how to cope with it and cope with people on a day to day basis thats hard.

  • wow, my brother has aspergers and he does that exact eye rolling thing as that man, the exact same face. weeeeird

  • I found this piece of crap so upsetting to watch I had to turn it off halfway through, and almost vomited into the top of a $2500 plasma TV as I did so. It is hard to even call it a film, but it is to the autistic what Ron Howard's Wonderland TV show was to the mentally ill (that was cancelled because NAMI protested hard enough).

  • I know what this film was trying to do; but seriously if people with a syndrome had such great insight regarding their deficits, wouldn't one's syndrome become less of a hindrance? Wouldn't they be able to solve their problems. The things about people with autism, is that they aren't even aware of their deficits.

  • I think they should have broken the fourth wall with this film; they should have been like, well my autism allows me to notice details, like that camera that seems to follow me. It would have then been a great movie.

  • That depends upon whom you're talking about. Not everyone with Autism or AS has the same issues and that is the problem. You either can relate to the people who are discribed in the story or you can't.

  • Actually, they ARE aware of their deficits, but they can't help being different. Asperger's Syndrome is highly functional autism, so these people are not semi-retarded or anything, they just happen to be bad with people, clumsy, bad at interpreting certain things, etc. This movie appears to use all the clichés and exaggerates the way these people behave.

  • No. I am aware of my deficits, but I can't just 'fix' them. If I could, then I would.

I can't even begin to try to explain to you how my brain works and why I can't fix my problems even though I'm aware of them.

  • While it was not bad i was kind of disappointed the traits are too extreme or over done. The only person i related to a little bit was the female character with going from happy to sad but didn't relate to the taking things literary.

  • great movie. maybe its over exagerrated mayb its not remember some people have mild aspergers ( me ) and some people more higher funtioning mayb thats what the character of the whale played.. and there is diff types of autism!

  • i should see this movie because i have asperger's

  • this is stupid, horribly overexaggerated, makes us insane when we aren't

  • thats an exageration of the syndrome, kind of disappointed...

  • i have it and can wholeheartedly call that lady a fat bastard then squirt ketchup on her fat self.

  • I have to agree, 2 starts out of 5 for extreme behaviors.

I thank God for the absolute provilige of assigning these wonderfull souls to my care.

  • check out the vids by jdplvy

  • the young boy is a dead ringer for my cousin

  • I can relate to the main female character(mozart one)

due to her using of sexuality as a expression tool.

    I have been there before(ages 20 and 34)

I can relate to the main male character(whale one)

due to not getting to the point but don't

relate to his looking away(I eye lock you)

    with intensity.

  • I got the DVD from a friend earlier last month.

I was a bit disappointed in the film due to some

of the extremities over-exagerated. The other

of the characters were dead-on or close.

2 stars for the film ** out of 5 due to extremities

  • Yey I love this movie but only because it was filmed in Spokane. Made me like the movie more.
