  • I plan on naming my first son after this guy. :D He is just that freakin awesome!

  • NYS forever holds its head up high at Col. Chamberlin. NYS will march side by side with any Maine boys, ALL HAIL COL. Chamberlin

  • La carga a la bayoneta de Chamberlain, es similar, estrategicamente, a la carga de los "Grises" en Waterloo...

  • Freedom is not free. All who served, all who gave, M.I.A, You will never be forgotten!

  • What an icon. Look at the gaze in every photo. A man beyond himself, doing the duty that only few could ever stand. He should be celebrated like a true hero.

  • I have always believe that God want United States To Remain as Whole. And not separated. And that is why We the People are Blessed.

  • A great commander Lt Gen J.L Chamberlain

  • abgesehen von einigen armen hunden im wk1 wohl der letzte bayonett angriff... wie tapfer!

  • Chamberlain's 20th Maine was the "flank": the extreme left of the Union army at Gettysburg and defended Little round top to where they were at the breaking point, but held. Job well done, Col Chamberlain.

  • I like the Picture's of Chamberlain in his later yr;s,

he was a very dapper, and distinguished looking man,

in his suit, and the pic of him in the later Union Uniform,

He looked very Dapper in that union Uniform with the wide gold band across his shoulder,

    if he was here today,,,

Id walk up to him, and Hug him and then stand back , and salute him, and shake his hand to thank him for what he did in the war,

  • chamberlain was a really good, and forgiving officer, he always made sure his unit was in good spirit's and made sure they went phisically shattered, or hurt if it could be helped at all,

He was a very helpful officer and saw to his unit's need's in a personal way,

short , or out of ammo and reinforcement's he too little round top and defeated the enemy in one swift move charging down that hill to never give up, untill it was done,

  • Jeff Daniel's was perfect to play chamberlain,

he has the same stance and same look as chamberlain,

He was perfect for the part,

  • they couldnt have gotten anyone better than jeff daniel's to play chamberlain,

he was perfect in every way, the look the makeup and the stance,

chamberlain was very helpful to his troops and treated them well,

Made sure they always had decent food and clothing,

helped them to keep thier spirits up too,

    Really Good Officer,

  • He is a hero. Ordered the amazing bayonet charge that saved many men's lives. Not to mention his mustache is awesome.

  • "Gentlemen, we are the flank."

  • A very very good Film!!!

  • Jeff Daniels who played Chamberlain in the film Gettysburg looked very much like the war hero. Chamberlain was perhaps a bit thinner.

  • Chamberlain by far my favorite personality of Gettysburg, maybe even the entire war. He was a schoolteacher who believed in the mission to the hilt. Out of ammo and no reinforcements or resupply, his charge won for him a most deserved Congressional Medal of Honor--one of 62 awarded Gettysburg participants. A man of peace, with more courage than any war dog I served with in Nam. Chamberlain was a great man.

  • hahaha, yeah, thats something every American wants; shake the hand of a famous civil war soldier...

Personal, i want to shake the hand of Stuart of Jackson but i have a great respect for this man

  • my hero-----next to sherman

  • Chamberlain and the 20th Maine are true American heroes! If they had not held Little Round Top, then the Confederates would have flanked the Union army and might have won the entire Battle of Gettysburg. Let us never forget the heroic sacrifices made on July 2, 1863, by the 20th Maine and all of the brave soldiers who fought at that terrible battle.

  • They were very heroic. However, the fate of the army did not hang on Little Round Top... on the other side of the hill was the entire ticked-off XI Corps, the largest in the army. :)

  • Sorry, I'm a doofus with my Latin numerals. VI corps, not XI corps.

  • J.L. Chamberlain is a true American hero. Gen. J.B. Gordon surrendered the Confederate troops at Appomattox to Gen. Chamberlain.

Youve been taught all these years that Lee surrendered to Grant! They agreed on / signed the articles of surrender.

There are many other historical facts "omitted" from the yankee written history books.

Bet you didn't know Chanberlain had his troops salute / honor the defeated Confederates as they laid down their arms.

It's quite moving, read about it!

  • Yes, in fact, I did hear about that a time or two. ;)

Lee did surrender to Grant. Let's get over it.

  • @Pillboxesghost The salute was not reported favorably in the north, but Gordon put it into perspective by calling Chamberlain "one of the knightliest soldiers of the Federal Army".

  • @Pillboxesghost . Grant chose Chamberlin to receive the surrender. it was an honor accorded Chamberlin At Yorktown Maj General Benjamin Lincoln took the British surrender for the Americans because of his service at the surrender of Charlestown. There were lots of American hero's and many of them never lived to the surrender. Strong Vincent my 5th cousin died defending Little Rountop.his the efforts and bravery of Vincent were instrumental in the eventual Union victor.

  • Any blond man who is capable of doing so should grow an awesome mustache like Chamberlain's.

  • When you see the actual photos of this man, it's clear how much Jeff Daniels who portrayed him in the Gettysburg film resembles him. Daniels is not quite as thin.

  • Yeah, not QUITE... especially in Gods & Generals, he was fat enough for 3 Chamberlains. From the neck up though, he does look a lot like him.

  • exactly - and all the fat extras waddling around in gettysburg pretending to be soldiers.

  • Let us remember these brave heroes for all time! Never let their sacrifices go unnoticed

  • never forget the 20th maine!!!!!!!!!

  • J. L. Chamberlain, J. Buford and W. S. Hancock - the heros of Gettysburg !

  • Three of many. :)

  • Yes, of course !

The soldiers on both sides were heros.

  • Very true and let's not omit General Warren who saw Little Round Top was not occupied and through the command structure had Colonel Vincent sent up with the 44th New York, the 16th Michigan, the 83rd Pennsylvania and of course the 20th Maine to establish their position and hold it through out the day.

  • And kindly allow a "huzzah and a tiger" for that boy general with the long golden hair from Michigan, who stopped Stuart's cavalry dead in their tracks north of town. Had he not, that offensive by Longstreet and Pickett might have had a different outcome.

Whatever abject stupidity he may have displayed against the Sioux and Cheyenne 13 years later, Custer was a legitimate hero on July 3, 1863.

  • It took a lot to stop Stuart. I will give Custer his props.

  • He's the damn best officer of the 20th maine!

  • Einer der besten Soldaten der Unions Armee!

  • Ja, ich stimme

  • Savior of the union!

  • Gotta love the 'stache that ol J.L.C. is sportin too. He was definately my favorite character in Gettysburg and Gods and Generals.

  • I tell you if I was younger and mustaches were in, I would like to grow a real large one like Chamberlain had. It was a masterpiece! It kind of inspires awe in one.

  • Mustaches are coming back in style. Any man capable of growing a mustache like JLC's should let NOTHING stand in his way!

And youth has nothing to do with it -- I've seen photos of JLC as an old fellow and he looked just as good with a long white mustache.

  • That portrait of Chamberlain at 2:49 is especially nice. Very Distinguished

  • what genrals would u guys go for id go for chamberlain or meade confedrate would be lee and Gen Pickett or jeb Stuart

  • Go for?

  • Every time I watch this video, I have this feeling that I must salute General Chamberlain. I read a book authored by him and discovered just how articulate he really was. Also, I sat upon a large rock on Little Round Top that he purportedly sat on when he returned to Gettysburg over the years in order to contemplate what had happened at that place so long ago. As I sat there, I did ponder and dream and as he said, the shadow of a mighty presence was indeed all around me.

  • great video i just went on a trip to gettysburg harpersferry and antetiam but i was unfortunate enough to not have gotten through the killer angels in time the biggest regret of my life

  • He looks really bold in that picture at 2:50.

  • A few things: this must be every one's favorite song from Gettysburg. Two, Joshua2153, you are named after the guy who saved Gettysburg (or at least that is what my dad says). Jeff Daniels really does look him, they'd better make the Last Full Measure into a movie. And Killer Angels is the best book about the BOG (the story-line for the movie Gettysburg).

  • Chamberlain was one of many men who saved the battle of Gettysburg. Daniels is too fat to be Chamberlain now, though. He actually was too fat in Gods & Generals. He is big enough to make two Chamberlains now.

Killer Angels is a good novel but it's not history... there are some inaccuracies and some people are shortchanged.

  • Particularly Stuart.

  • Don't forget kilrain wasn't a real person but has similarities to one

  • MY NAME IS JOSHUA LAWRENCE!!! NO JOKE!

  • Cool!

  • well jeff daniels was the best actor for chamberlain because his face is nearly identic with the face of the real Person Joshua Chamberlain

  • i swear to god that he is my great great (maybe another great) grandfather. if you dont believe me, i dont mind. I know it is true and good job making the video!

  • Good for you, you must be real proud of him, as i am of my ancestors from that era. I remember reading an essay about the forgotten meeting at Appomatox between all the generals, and how Major General Chamberlain was there and that alot of the story of that reunion was told by him. Guess God rewarded him with survival and a life-time vacation to Maine:)

  • @LauraLeeLovesCows

    I believe you.

  • joshua chamberlain is the manliest man of all time. just look at that mustache.

  • Well said!

  • dude had some unique mustache huh?

    i want one

  • He was born in Brewer Maine. I live about 20 minutes away from brewer. Yay.

    but seriously. an american hero

  • Chamberlain was one of the few commanders (that I have come across so far in my readings) that was a competent leader and inspired courage in his men. He did deserve the Medal of Honor and his promotion to Brigadier General, though I thought he ought to have at least made it to Major General... oh well.. can't change the past. He did deserve more than he got in the end.

  • He did make it to major general.

  • He doesn't look at thing like Jeff Daniels!!

  • I think he looks just like him!

  • So do I Eringpbragh915! He does look just like him!

  • It's not that he looks like Jeff Daniels, it's that Jeff Daniels looks like him when you compare the two after Daniels has all the facial hair and the uniform.

  • In other words, Daniels in the role of Chamberlain looks like Chamberlain.

  • Chamberlain was AWESOME!

    Long Live Maine!!

  • treu AMERICAN hero!!!

  • This man very well could have saved the world as we know it..............

  • True

  • May God bless chamberline, and when he was promoted and won the congressional medal of honor,he deserved it all and more. He is one of many people that encourages me to join the USA Military

  • Actually, he deserves many salutes! He was great!!!

  • He deserves a salute!!!

  • God bless Chamberlains soul.

  • Amen.

  • Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain. A true AMERICAN hero. the man who defended little round top. he should be mentioned right up there with audie murphy and the 101st airborne at bastogne.

  • 1 of the best videos on youtube

  • Chamberlain is the msot heroic man I've seen in my history classes, short of General Washington himself. True patriot. The artwork you used, and the song, are both stupendous.

  • same here, and I'm A Canadian.

  • erin go to gettysburg yourself and look at the monument at the top of little round top of general green. He and the 78th new york held little round top from 7,000 confederates with 400 men through two days of fighting. go there urself i might have had wrong info but the main right depended on green.

  • I have been to Little Round Top and have climbed up the 78th NY monument tower. It is on the Union left, not the right. And it is not as far to the left as the location across the road that was held by Chamberlain and the 20th Maine. They were the end of the line.

  • I paid a visit to where Chamberlain made the charge on Little Round Top. As I contemplated old Chamberlain and his men and how they saved our left flank and our nation, a tear came to my eye. Chamberlain forever!

  • oh, thats cool, all i remember was a couple days ago my us history teacher was talkin about him and how his bro always called him lawrence

  • its Lawrence Joshua Chamberlain

  • Joshua Lawrence. He changed his name, but from childhood always went by his middle name, Lawrence, which he then made his first name.

  • A distinguished and gallant example of the

    patriotic gentleman-scholar turned soldier.

An American of whom Americans should be proud.

  • it wasnt just chamberlain the army of the potomac depended on. there was a general by the name of general green who held little round top with the 78th and 102nd new york regiments. they also played a key roll in the battle of gettysburg. god bless the union.

  • "It wasn't just Chamberlain the Army of the Potomac depended on"? That's a bit of an understatement, isn't it? :)

  • No finer gentleman could have been chosen to accept the formal surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia than Chamberlain.

  • Agreed.

  • "Those boys from Alabama said they'd never been whipped before....and never wanted to meet the 20th of Maine again..."

Long Live the 20th! Thanks for the video. Makes this County boy proud.

  • a citizen soldier and a true patriot and defender of the union.

  • Very Nice Tribute - thanks for sharing ! Chamberlain was a Godly man and a true hero.

  • You know when in "Gettysburg" Chamberlain leads his bayonet charge down Little Round Top? During filming, they couldn't find Jeff Daniels' prop sword anywhere. My teacher had a friend who was a reenactor during the filming. He had my history teacher's sword with him, which belonged to the teachers's ancestor who fought at Gettysburg. This friend let Jeff Daniels use my teacher's sword for the charge. My teacher says he's going to bring the sword to school some day and let me see it.

  • It doesn't get much cooler than that.

  • Very nice! Chamberlain truly was a hero.

  • Chamberlain the academic was quite the brave action figure. We sure could use men of his caliber today. Where are the giants of the past?

  • I'm in "Gettysburg", 20th Maine - was right behind Jeff Daniels in the bayonet charge.

I saw JLC on LRT last year - still there!

  • You need to see Steve Earle's "Dixieland" - there is one on here - it tells the story of the 20th Maine from Kilrain's perspective. Comments on JLC. You'll post it, I'm sure!

  • Chamberlain, one of the North's greatest yet little known heroes.

  • Indeed... I wish people would learn of his heroism...

  • My personal hero, Bvt Maj. General Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain

  • Glad you enjoyed it :)

  • I'm named after him!

    -Joshua Chamberlain Hollin, Missloula, MT

  • Very cool!
