If a big name like GMC or Apple was to go belly up, another company or person would BUY that company just for the name. If they turn the company back up or slice and dice it is up to them. But we should never, ever bail out a company, government should never dabble in a free market. A company goes bankrupt, people lose jobs, another company comes up and takes its place, more jobs created. This is the concept of free market. The US has been Cuba's main supplier of food since 2003. The US has also given millions of dollars in foreign aid to Cuba. The "embargo" is a myth, its only real function is to prevent American college kids from getting drunk in Havana.

@TheCF221 also, take into consideration that a normal cuban will earn at most 20-25 dollars A MONTH, they were banned from their country's hotels (until recently) they are banned from traveling, they are charged in Dollars while they are paid in Cuban pesos (1dollar=25 pesos). They are charged ridiculously high for daily essentials like electricity (which even sucks since they have power outages almost every week, for hours a day) etc etc etc... so Moore certainly ignored these "drawbacks."

But everyone who works pays taxes and the middle class pays a higher percentage of their income in taxes than the wealthy. That's a well known fact. So yeah, we all bailed them out.

@apnwahoowa I think I understand your point of view. But I feel that civic virtue is a wholly positive thing, regardless of whether or not it is voluntary. In the case of healthcare, I would much rather pay a slightly higher tax rate so if an accident were to occur I wouldn't have to worry about whether the insurance would pay or going into debt. Even if I wasn't subject to an accident, I wouldn't mind paying extra taxes that would see lives saved after incidents, rather than ruined by debt.

There is an implicit threat of force behind every law, so people would essentially be forced to pay for others' healthcare. Do you want that? If you believe that healthcare for others is worthy of your money, go start a private charity. Don't force others to share your values.
businesses are slaves to cost effiency .they will use more resources and create more waste, polution, damage, and death, if it will create more profit. they will not change under competition. the real answer is to do away with money, capital, resource ownership, and profit. we need to produce goods and services on some other basis. the resource based econonmy can produce more with less resource use. How will socialism be any better than capitalism? Global warming, nuclear weapons, overpopulation, big brother...these problems aren't simply going to dissapear by converting to a socialist economy. And by doing so you'll have eliminated for all-time any meaningful autonomy and freedom at the local and individual level. How then is socialism the answer to all the real problems we're facing?

Lets say that global warming is not the only environmental problem, however the chances of investing in renewable energy would be much higher because it wouldnt be done for profit, nowdays private companies dont want to do that because its not beneficial to them, by going socialism we would greatly reduce the amount of waste produced because you wouldnt go to shop and buy 20 new shirts which you dont really need just because its on sale.
This problem is a global problem not specific to any country.
3. Overpopulation
Note that most of the worlds population comes from least developed countries because infant mortality is high and some of the kids have to survive to look after the parents. The birth rates in developing countries are declining. I suppose changing americas system would change that much however if the whole world turned socialist the numbers would stabilise.
@koliber231 You're right as far as those two being the main factors of overpopulation. However, worldwide, there's more than enough resources to keep our populations sustained. If we were overpopulated, don't you think we'd be dying out? Worldwide, that is. Not just in under-developed countries.
Also, the fact that Americans can consume so much sort of just illustrates that we have such an abundance of resources. And, therefore, no worry of overpopulation.
Also , how much freedom do you think you have? Capitalism has provided a great basis for wealth, counhtries who employed it have been gifted with leaps in technology leaps in public health and a furthering for education etc but there are those who over the many years have found loop holes and ways to manipulate the system to work for themselves and at the cost of others and that is where the failings are.

@TheCF221 also, take into consideration that a normal cuban will earn at most 20-25 dollars A MONTH, they were banned from their country's hotels (until recently) they are banned from traveling, they are charged in Dollars while they are paid in Cuban pesos (1dollar=25 pesos). They are charged ridiculously high for daily essentials like electricity (which even sucks since they have power outages almost every week, for hours a day) etc etc etc... so Moore certainly ignored these "drawbacks."

@apnwahoowa I think I understand your point of view. But I feel that civic virtue is a wholly positive thing, regardless of whether or not it is voluntary. In the case of healthcare, I would much rather pay a slightly higher tax rate so if an accident were to occur I wouldn't have to worry about whether the insurance would pay or going into debt. Even if I wasn't subject to an accident, I wouldn't mind paying extra taxes that would see lives saved after incidents, rather than ruined by debt.

@qTheOnep ARE YOU KIDDING ME? we CHOSE not to work. where i live in bflo ny, our law in NYS says bosses can fire without a cause and i had three of them tell me that to my face! i graduated HS and have a CDL-B to drive OTR buses but cant since bosses can fire us for no reason, i lost my home and car, how in the hell did I CHOOSE that? others are born to poor parents, others like my sister ended up with diseases that disabled them. college grads have no jobs, so that's THEIR fault?

@qTheOnep FYI , many of the rich got rich off the backs of the poor and thats why we remeain poor, madoff stole everything, fat cats got bonuses while laying ppl off their jobs, they have money for everything else but jobs and you NEVER qualify for the jobs that ARE there. we are NEVER good enough for hire. thats OUR FAULT TO I GUESS. u are a real peice of work. oh well, thanks to my jobs being taken fom me, your taxes pay my SSD/SSI. so there. God looked out for me when employers didnt.

@721rem What you don't understand is that most of these people out of work can "STILL' make it work, they don't need constant handouts unless of course they rely on welfare and have no intention of ever working. Did you even know that "poor" in America statistically means that 70 percent have a color TV, and basic amenities? 50 percent and more have a vcr? @qTheOnep I did forget to tell you and you can google amherst ny pillar. a beautiful thing happened here in buffalo. a corporate office thought it would be fun to mimmick the homeless by dressing like them for a holloween party, well, thanks to threatening phones calls, and news coverage, all the employees were fired, 600 of them, 600!
lets see how fun it is now for them to live as REAL homeless ppl if they dont find another job. bwah hahahahahahahahaha
