Defending Henry Cavill, My opinion on why Tom Welling and Brandon Routh weren't casted

Bruce Banner, and Jennifer Connelly is always great. It's just that the film sucked. Ang Lee should stick to gay westerns and/or Chinese swordfighting epics

@ieodksnw787 Eric Bana was a good Bruce Banner and I did like Jennifer Connelly as Betty Ross more than Live Tyler. However, my point still stands that because it was a reboot the actors were replaced, it was a different continuity than Ang Lee's Hulk with very few similarities. Though Notron is now replaced for whatever reason, The incredible Hulk film is still in continuity with the Avengers so most if not all the cast from the last film may come back if they did a sequel.

the only thing good about returns was Spacey (better than Hackman IMO), and Routh's Clark.

Welling has said he was in talks for SR, but he was contracted to Smallville so those talks fell apart at the initial stages.

First of all, in film it's quite easy to make a 6'1 man look 6'3. 6'4 stretches a bit b/c I consider 6'4 to be the beginning of quite tall.

I'd prefer welling. None of them look exactly like Reeve. Reeve was very masculine but also had a very vulnerable/sensitive side. He looked masculine yet boyish as either Clark or Superman.

Routh was too boyish, looked like a college kid w/ a nice halloween costume. Cavill on the other hand is too masculine and looks roided out. Welling is best imo

@ieodksnw787 Well dude it's not about looking like Reeve, in fact that's not what they were trying to do at all. The point was to find someone who most resembled Superman. Reading the comics Cavill matches more to the Curt Swan and John Byrne's version of Superman at least in facial features and is closer to his physique in the comics too. You say he's too masculine, but Superman has been drawn to be just as masculine in comics for a long time.

@ieodksnw787 Welling is similar to John Bynre's Superman as well, but he leans towards the boyish side a little too. Not as Boyish as Routh perhaps, but to a certain degree, a little more of a boyish version of Byrne's Superman but still much more masculine than Routh.

@arthurthethirdxxx I made my case on why it wasn't going to happen. Tom Welling is connected to Smallville,Brandon Routh is connected to SR. This movie is connected to neither universe. Tom Welling is affiliated with another take on the Superman mythology therefore he wasn't chosen. It not about how long he's played Clark Kent or that he's 6'3. With Reboots, the point is to refresh the franchise and start from scratch, breaking ties from the previous incarnations.

Nolan's Batman has little to no ties to Tim Burton's Batman or Schumacher's, Marc Webb's Spider-man has no one connected to Sam Raimi's Spider-man. The point is these are reboots and this is what usually happens. The moment they announced that they were doing a reboot instead of "Smallville the movie" should have been an indicator that they were not going to use anyone who's played Clark Kent/Superman before.

I don't know why his height is an issue at all. Its a fucken movie, its not like you going to stand next to him and say look his not 6,4 he can't be superman. All they have to do is cast shorter actors around him and he will look taller. Is all these nerds who got nothing better to then to search up actor profile and compare their height to fictional comic book characters that make it an issue.

@xrey2000 I honestly don't know, but it's understandable, "to a degree." I mean I wouldn't want Superman to be played by someone who's like 5'4 or 5'6, but they could make work and if he blows everyone away then it wouldn't be a problem. But his height is not such a big deal, like I said he's a good actor. My beef is if he lets his accent slip, but he'll be fine he's done an American accent before and he's doing his homework for the character. Fans in general can be very harsh on adaptations.

Please, this new movie's going to suck, all the hype that it's building up is going to be wasted. Snyder is a terrible director, and Nolan is a crappy adapter, his Batman was completely off, and from what we've seen it appears his Superman will be too. And what's with that ugly suit...it looks freaking ridiculous, and it's too detailed to be Superman's. This is a disaster waiting to happen.

Henry Cavill is gonna blow everyone away. Tom Welling looks the part, but he's a decent actor at best. I love how everyone bitches that Cavill is too skinny when Chris Reeve was a TWIG! And just cuz Cavill's skinny now doesn't mean he can't buff up for the role. It's called a gym and its called weights people. Substance over style.

For the record- Brandon Routh is a very, very wooden actor. I've seen him in other roles- Scott Pilgrim and lately Dylan Dog. Others have started to notice lately that his acting is very monotone.

Routh was the worst thing to ever happen to Superman.

(1)This film will not be tied to the previous franchise therefore it's a different direction and a reinvention. Synder already confirmed that the movie is it's own thing. Let me put it to you this way you're getting less of what Donner and Reeve did with Superman. Meaning different Krypton, new Metropolis and over all a new take on the mythology. Plus it will have no ties to Smallville's mythology either. (2)In the finale Clark (in a way) did become Superman.

Tom Welling has been on the scene for YEARS. Just because he hasn't been picked THIS movie doesn't mean this is a new thing. Tom is Clark. NOT Superman. There is such a difference.

@IrishBirdy1 Yes there's a difference between Clark and Superman, but their both identities of the same person. Yes, Smallville was ultimately about Clark's journey to become Superman, but he and Superman are still the same character just different personalities. So Tom who may only have been playing Clark, is still playing Kal-el the last son of Krypton aka Superman, so technically he was still playing Superman (just in his developing stages as Clark).

I agree, however, DC stats on Superman are as follows: 6'3, 225lbs. What's 2 inches? That's a very small difference to make up & nothing that lifts or boots couldn't take care of. Yeah, they need to reboot the Superman Movies again. It's 2011 and 2006's Superman Returns was not a good look. Rebooting it for a 2011 Superman feel is a good choice.

The mistake was Warner Bros hired and probably trusted the wrong man (Bryan Singer) for the project by Bryan knew nothing about Superman... Bryan was a former Marvel Comics writer, he never touched or read a DC Comic and especially a Superman comic... that's why the movie was horrible... my opinion

I am very supported of this casting, Henry Cavill is an amazing actor. He has the look and he is already bulking up for his role in the Immortals. Look at Chris Hemsworth before he started bulking up for Thor and he managed the weight gain no problem. Also I have total faith in Christopher Nolan he is a phenomenal director and if he believe in Cavill I do. Remember Nolan cast Heath Ledger as the Joker, everyone thought he was crazy and Ledger got the Oscar for that role.

It's not just Smallville fans. If the problem is that is a reboot, they shouldn't do it that way then. Just think something that fit people wishes. @mahalcat Snyder and Goyer I think has more say in whether it will be dark or not. Nolan's part is mostly in terms of helping with story and producing. To be honest it may not even be all that dark. Maybe just more contemporary and a bit grittier, but not as dark as say Batman or anything like that. The movie will be Pg-13 no doubt.

@mahalcat Snyder's movies were dark because the source material was pretty dark, same thing with Nolan and Batman. Having said that Superman is source material has been much brighter for the longest time. That doesn't mean that it'll be a boring or terrible if it's brighter, the villains can be darker and the world can be a bit grittier, but over all Superman is considered a symbol of light and hope. As long as there's good action, effects, story and great performances, it should be fine.

I like Smallville for example but I find the writing a little light, I want some deep emotional content. I know Superman is a brighter character than Batman, you are right, but he has also had a tragic past. I would like to see more of it, because it is the pain in our lives that either makes us stronger or destroys us.

The fact even though he looks like us, talks like us, act like us and of course cares about us, he knows deep down that he will never be truly one of us and that can be a bit tragic for him. Than is why I love Batman Begins because Nolan and Goyer gave Bruce Wayne that journey of adversity and history, so when he finally met his present and its challenges we better understand him, the last Superman did not allow us that insight which made Brandon Routh portrayal flat and unmemorable.
