I can't believe the guy said "it didn't rejuvenate attention" because there weren't that "many media cameras." Did he not realize that every student in the US watched this LIVE, and that had never happened before????

As a 3rd grader at the time, I will never forget that day. It was a combination of complete shock among us students, seeing many teachers crying for the first time, and coming home and just feeling like the entire country was completely overwhelmed. Reagan's speech that night was profoundly moving.

With that in mind, it would be nice to read other memories here, instead of ridiculous conspiracy ideas of a 25 year old tragedy.

It is most likely that the crew died when the cabin landed in the sea. It is not clear if any remained conscious to the end but it is known that Scobee, at the controls, did not give up and fought it for as long as he was able.

In the end he shined with the qualities that make these people stand apart from the rest of us.

If you're not an American, just someone who sucks the advantages gained from the shuttle program without contributing a dime to it, then you really have nothing to say about it, now do you? I remember seeing the Plum in the Cold Florida Air (36c) from Winter Springs,FL On Tuesday Jan 28th 1986 .I was One at the time my mom held me in her arms as dad looked on in the front lawn.Being so Young at the time I truely didn't understand the "Horrid" event that took place infront of or eyes. It's still burnt in my Brain Forever seeing that unusual Plum 60,000 Feet in the Air.

@oiyabastard Incorrect! The Bush administration decided years before Obama ran for President to discontinue the shuttle program. The facilties to build and service the shuttle had been dismantled and sold before Obama took office. Want to blame someone for what happened to NASA? Dubya is the guy who arranged and profited from dismantling NASA.

The look on the capcom's face at 5;47 kind of says it all. This was so very sad and everyone was in shock.
