I first heard this on the 20th century greatest pianists set. Great expression and energy again from Horowitz. It's facinating how he can get the listener so pumped-up, like at the end of this piece.
Just a comment: this recording was available for many years on an RCA LP entitled "Homage to Liszt" and has subsequently been available on various CD reissues. Awesome stuff, regardless.
Love the Slavic pathos he brings to the slow section. What can one possibly say about those crazy octaves that follow, only Horowitz could achieve such electricity.
Sure, in my dreams. But it doesn't matter, I think that Horowitz's version of the final part is better than Liszt's one. Did you ever listen to such kind of octaves?
You are right! On YouTube a few yrs ago a group of people were commenting on Horowitz's playing. They were wondering why Horowitz was considered such a great pianist as they said he made a lot of mistakes. It bothered me cause the pieces they were listening to were recorded by Horowitz when he was older! I was going to log on, let them know the newer recordings were recorded when he wasn't in his prime, and then upload this album w/the Hungarian Rhapsody to show them how GREAT he really was.
@bertogel you've never heard Liszt, neither has any other living human being since there's no recording of Liszt on the planet. Liszt was THE GREATEST PIANIST OF HIS TIME among his peers, great composers not just internet wankers like you.
@flarbton, yes, yes, it isn't necessary to be so upset, I may say, however, that I've I've really heared Horowitz. Anyway your words, like "wanker", are not so sweet as as netiquette suggest, so please moderate yourself.....thank you.
@bertogel - My last post was commenting on your post about how great Vladimir Horowitz was! I grew up listening to him with my father. The album this came off of has a Pink Cover that just says "Piano Music From Chopin and Liszt", Vladimir Horowitz, Pianist. I got it from my Father when I was young & it's the reason I became a pianist. He is the GREATEST pianist known to me...& I have personally witnessed many of the greats in my lifetime.
@corwinofamber8 you're an idiot ,I would advise you to review some of busonis catalogue .The man had the best technique .All qualified musicologists and pianists agree with this.
oh my god. i feel so fortunate to have had this treat. it made my day. 7 minutes of bliss, listening to this interpretation. it makes you laugh and hold your breath with amazement, although these are only 2 of many feelings horwitz's playing can invoke. just the simple slow playfulness of the recording along with the ingenius and classy interpretation are amazing. i don't know what to say other than bravo mr. horwitz and thank you so much fillipe.
Many thanks for posting. This recording is widely available on a budget priced CD from RCA called Horowitz Encores. It was available for years on an LP from RCA called Homage to Liszt, so it's not that difficult to find.
contrary to popular report, horowitz ennobled virtuosic works. if you actually listen to what he's doing there's a probing intelligence and often a really outstanding intelligence. of course he fails sometimes (liszt legende no. 2 is terrible), but for every failure there is something like his islamey.
@catutaaa i completely disagree with you about him being the best pianist there ever was cuz im certain any one of the ancients (liszt himself, mozart, beethoven, rachmaninoff) woulda kicked his ass easily.
@Musicownz1997 not necessarily, as far as technical ability goes. And I'd hardly call those composers ancients if you look the history of music. I mean, Franz Liszt? He was around until 1886 and Horowitz was born 17 years later in 1903.
cmon guys. we all know this is Cziffras piece. end of story

5:00 First time I ever saw Horowitz curve his fingers. Usually they're flatter than a pancake.
JoeTownley 3 months ago
His fingers appear curved in this picture. Did he not always play with straight fingers then?

His was the greatest interpretation ever by far. We're just lucky Liszt never heard Horowitz play it, or he would have thrown in the towel.

@Tiberius1919 the way Horowitz builds to the climax in this piece is unequalled. Not even by Cziffra

@bobbphysics disagree. Cziffra is more of a show-off, just like Liszt was
