This is the only tune Phil Collins should have sung with the band. He didn't do anything near that which Peter Gabriel did as a front man for the band. In short, in my opinion, he sucked as a front man. He must have sold his soul to the devil to have sold all those records after Genesis sold out. The songs they wrote and played when they were a constant presence on the top 40 radio stations were a study in mediocrity at its' best.
in the archive edition of the live recording, in 1973, i remember hearing the audience reaction after he sang the song, u get the feeling that it was something special. probally why he eneded up as singing in the nend.
Ahh takes me back to when I was 14 (50yr old git now!) If I remember right Phil was inspired to sing this and other songs like it by the break up of his first marriage. (I'm sure plenty will correct me if I'm wrong!) nice footage, and enjoyed that Magog64
Actually it was a two parter with Phil and Peter (first song Phil sang "lead" on any Genesis album. also , foa all you fans, I dated a gal who's Dad was huge with Atlantic....Perry Cooper .renee was good friends w/ Phil and the band. He gave us backstage AND 8th row seats for the FINAL your at the Hollywood bowl on 10/14 08 We hung with Phil and his daughter Joely in the dressing room, got pis with Mike, chester and Phil. Tony and Darryl were at the buffet, but didnt have time to get autographs
@johncorsino The first time phil sang as leader is in "nursery cryme", in the song called "for absent friends" (word: phil collins; steve hackett music: steve hackett). :)
I started with wind and wuthering and trick of the tail and selling england and the lamb... then went back and forwards and sideways w each player and era... each talented and gifted: we have been blessed with a lot of greta music by these musicians!
Yeah you can always count on these sorts of pedantic fools to nit-pick any great performance to death. Was it Tertullian who said that opinions are like assholes, everyone has them?
it wasn't selling out, It was keeping with the times. You couldn't make money on prog in the eighties, and Genesis knew this. Peter Gabriel also made pop music, so Genesis would probably have done Pop even if peter stayed with the band.
Most of thier albums with Peter weren't that succesfull, yes. Even The Lamb (thier best album IMO) could be considered a flop xD But, when they released TOAT, something happened. Suddenlt, they were getting famous :)
This is only speaking in terms of US success. "Genesis Live", "Selling England" and "The Lamb" were all top 10 in the UK and I believe all of them (plus Foxtrot) topped the charts in Italy. They were also voted best live act in the 1974 MM poll and were selling out large theaters in the UK and Western Europe. It's only because they had accumulated *so* much debt in the 1970-72 period that they didn't get out of it until after Gabriel left.
Again, by 73/74 that had started to change and by 76/77 they were certainly making quite a bit, enough to get out of the *MASSIVE* debt they'd accumulated in the first few years of their career.
i completely agree, i personally dispise the commercial post wind and wuthering albums but i don't blame phil collins for them its just that after punk prog rock couldn't be succesful and it was either make duke or throw in the towell
Glad you agree :) But you are forgetting about the album between WW and Duke, "And Then There Were Three" A lovely album, and it's still prog genesis. Duke was the "album in between" it had both prog and pop/rock songs, but i think it's a great album. Also, don't go blaming Phil Collins for turning genesis into a pop group. Mike and Tony were just as responsible for that. Phil didn't really become the "leader" until Invisible Touch IMO. We Can't Dance IS Phil's album and his genesis swansong.
@Janne112 you had make justice on GREAT ALBUM ... I love AND THEN THERE WERE THREE... only blind fans of GENESIS will continue with that kind of hate on the albums post Gabriel, with that rigid position ... and it s worst than that... now exist the Hackett mania .... finally I like too much DUKE is a album that has something special .... actuallity !
I can agree with this--they would have headed in a pop direction anyway. It's just that, with Gabriel and/or Hackett, it would have been a *good* pop direction. As pop songs "Shock The Monkey" or "In Your Eyes" are way, way more substantial than 80s Genesis. Some of their 80s stuff like "Duchess" and "Mama" is OK but the rest...urgh.
I can agree with that. With Peter the pop would have been more in the "art rock" direction. I just think that people should stop blaming Phil Collins and Genesis for becoming more commercial. They did what had to be done, so they could continue to make money and release music.
No, I definitely agree with that. It was the 80s, everybody went pop and cheesy in that decade, so you can't solely blame Collins. They were just moving with the times like every other band. I think Collins gets a lot of blame because his material was especially soppy, and Genesis albums started to sound more and more like his solo albums. But you could even say that the move toward "pop" started as early as disc one of "The Lamb" (but that was *brilliant* pop!).
Well, Genesis have always had a little bit pop in them, but so have almost every prog band. Listen to thier first "From Genesis to Revelation" and also to songs like "I Know what I like" and "Counting Out Time" There has always been pop elements in Genesis, and after Peter and Steve left, the rest of the band expanded on that in an attempt to remain popular and still make money.
Well, yeah, the first album was pop for sure, they were trying to be the Bee Gees. And there was always at least one (sometimes two) pop songs on the early 70s records. But I don't think Gabriel or Hackett would have prevented them from going pop, even if they'd stayed Genesis would still have gone pop (as Gabriel did)...it was the 80s.
@Janne112 i do believe, though, that songs like Counting Out Time and Harold the Barrel were meant as parodies, meaning they were deliberately tryng to write "poppy" tunes
Yea no kidding. I have that book. Phil SANG the VOCALS for the song that STEVE wrote the GUITAR for is that clearer? Holy crap can't people read anymore?
I gave my correction in a positive friendly manner. Since you cannot seem to communicate in a kind and friendly manner Terragen, perhaps you should not speak at all. I was going from memory. I do not believe I was incorrect that both of them wrote that track together. I am pretty certain that is what was written in the book. I'll have to go back and check. In the meantime, it is not too difficult to be kind!!
Ok, just to clarify; no hard feelings. :) I guess since I still cannot let things go, I consider a song that is written by one person to include exclusively the music and all the lyrics. I just looked up the text to see if I was nuts in the book and Steve states that he wrote the music and that both he and Phil wrote the lyrics together. In my view, that is a co-written piece according to Steve. I do not care if I am right or wrong. I just wanted to clarify with the text.
Also, since your last response was still laced with an attitude and ill-mannered at best, this is the last time I am speaking to you. I hope that we at least learned something from my clarification. :)
jpskywalker04 this is indeed 1974. Phil sang this song on the Selling England By The Pound album in 1973. He also provided lead vocals on "For Absent Friends" on the 1971 release, Nursery Cryme, his first ever vocal recording. Peter was the primary lead on both albums. You are correct that Phil took over in 1976 after Peter's departure.
Oh get a life! Genesis and their management have been depriving us of material for years... then charge $200 when they release it. I applaud those fan who've allowed me to watch the Shepperton studios, Bataclan, Melody stuff... if it was left to 'corporate' we'd have absolutely NOTHING from the Gabriel era, so give it a rest!
Phil sang lead vocals on the first record with Genesis! The song is For Absent Friends (Nursery Cryme, 1971)... the guy joined the band to play the drums and on the second track, he was the lead vocalist.
He sings most of Harrold The Barrel. Funny he does not take any lead on Foxtrot. He takes them again on that song on SEBTP, and does not take any on the Lamb.
yeah, ill give him that! but what piss' me off the most about him is that the bootlegs he's made, he sells!! and genesis and their management are really pissed off with people who put together bootlegs and sell them and make profit off their material!!!
i've seen what genesis members have to say about it and they're not too pleasent about it most of the time!! and i dont blame them!! if you were popular, would you like someone else to be making money off of you?? so!! thats just my opinion! :)
hmm, I haven't seen any comments by them. Anyway, Tommy got the ball rolling and Genesis saw an uptick in catalog sales. Plus the guy made a video for me so I'm a bit biased.
Yeah, Tommy is an absolute complete loser to be making money off of these types of things. He should be ashamed of himself and I reckon he will be when Genesis management gets ahold of him.
Yes. But, I don't like the fact he's being stingy with the material (I'm not always going on YouTube to see this-LOL). At least you had the decency to share yours with us. I play my DVD I got from you often. Thanks again.
