She looks and sounds fantastic ! She is one year and 2 days younger than me and I can tell you pushing 50 and doing what she does, and looking like she looks is amazing.
I think the reason there is an issue with this version of the song is that for most of us Stevie Wonder's version is imprinted in our minds. Nobody else's would sound "right". If you go back and listen to Stevie's version with an expensive set of head phones you can see how stupendous his voice sounds. Not to mention one of the best harmonica solo's in history! I love Joan Osborne, she's keepin' the faith.
There is a scene in Standing in the Shadows where Joan and some of the Funk Brotheres are sitting in a diner and Joan starts to sing, and the funk brothers visibly thrill to the beauty of her voice. Maybe you don't like her, but they do. And I think their opinion has, shall we say, a bit of clout.
Okay, for those who wanna roast me over my opinion, that's fine. I'll accept that. But still in all, I have heard many, many renditions of this song and I just feel she butchered it. I don't remember mentioning Gladys & Aretha at all. However, I have heard this version (the upbeat one, not the original slow one) and have never heard it done this bad. It's not an easy song to sing, especially with this being Stevie's version. Example: How do you think Christina Aguilera would've done?
@er9421....Okay, then if that's the case, then who are you to question my opinion? My opinion is valid. Listen to Gladys, Aretha and others. she's not a soul artists. Just because she's siging don't make her all that good in regards to the riffs, runs and vocal quality of REAL soul artists. But obviously you think he was the best choice....not...she was available. Plus, the band didn't pick her, that's not how it works.....dummy!!!
@afrosensuous :oh,so if you name Gladys and Aretha your opinion is valid?..ok,this may not be her best performance (sound isn't that good either, keep in mind),but to say that Joan Osbourne has no soul makes me laugh..As if Aretha is that great everytime lol..and to compare this with Celine Dion trying to sing a Chaka Khan song is just not done..Like er9421 says, check both songs on the Standing in the shadows of Motown DVD and then come back and say again she has no soul,if you dare ;)
@afrosensuous You are certainly entitled to your opinion. If I implied otherwise, please accept my apology. The point I was trying to make was that the Funk Bros seemed to feel a real connection to Joan. Her rendition of "What Becomes of the Broken Hearted" was amazing. Did you watch the show? No one appreciates the talents of Gladys and Aretha more that I do. Never saw Aretha live, but did have the privilege of seeing G and the Pips at Leos Casino in Cleveland back in the late 60's.
There's absolutely no soul to her voice. She literally "butchered" this song. Soime people need not to sing certain songs. That's like Celine Dion trying to sing a Chaka song. She sucks!!!!
@afrosensuous If you had seen Joan perform in Standing in the Shadows of Motown you would have seen and felt the obvious chemistry and connection between Joan and the Band. They could have picked just about anybody to tour with them, but picked Joan. Who do you think you are to question their judgment?
@er9421...If you feel I can't question their judgement, then who are you to question mine? That hypocrasy on so many levels. I said what I said someone said the performance was right on and it wasn't. Some of you don't know the history of this song. She's missing vocal elements that made the song a hit. Plus, that's not all the original Funk Brothers. But, if your needto be the youtube God, then so be it. But your statement madeyou out to be a hypocrite.
@KeyboardMan1977.....okay I saw Celine for free over amonth ago and I didn't hear any soul music because that's not what she does. i've never heard her attempt it, not that she can't, but at the same time, this vid is all about the Funk Brothers. Please send me a linik to at least 3 soul songs she's done justice to. You must be a Celine fan. Stay in that side of the funk and leave this to folks who know funk/soul.
@afrosensuous I'm a music fan. Good music is good music. Funk/soul is probably the genre I know best, though, so get off your high horses. I was just pointing out that Celine got a lot of qualities that we usually think of as "soulful" - vocal runs, great timing, emotion. I'm aware that she hasn't recorded any pure soul material - so no links, sorry. But listen a bit deeper to some of her songs, and you'll hear it. Or you won't.
@KeyboardMan1977...Look, I've seen Celine live and liked the concert. Her vocal control during runs (especially in proper scale mode) is excellent. I'm not knocking her. I put her with Neil Sedaka, Barry Manilow, Dionne Warwick and others like that. I'm not on a high horse because I listen aso so many genres of music that it ain't even funny. From Tears For Fears to Thomas Dolby to Cameo to Earth Wind & Fire, etc. My original 'COMMENT" was regarding Joan's performance on THIS song. Read!
does anyone have the recording of MY guy from this concert ( montreal jazz fest 2004) when audience members were called up onto the stage? I was at the concert and it was cool event. It was filmed but did it end up on the cutting room floor?
You don't have a BAND like this backing you up if your ,, SH,, not up to par !!! You know what class is ?!? Giving someone proper's despite what their position in life is !!!

Paul Williams(The Temptations) has a really nice version. Not as hip as Stevie's but still very powerful!

@afrosensuous I agree that Stevie's version is better and that this is not one of Joan's best efforts.
