I think African Butterfly fish are so freakin cool.They remind me of mini arrowanas. How much do you have to worry about these guys jumping out of your tank?
you have to worry allot. I had the cover on my tank and he jumped out of the hole in the back for the heater and filter in the middle of the night and died. :(
@biologyfuckyeah AFB are in their own family, but yes, I know theyre closest relatives are the arrowana, a 15 gal seems a bit small for more than one because the ones that i I had in my 55 gal would stay at opposite ends of the tank which leads me to think they may be a bit territorial, but if your just keeping one im sure itd be fine. Remember to try and get a tank with as much area as possible, the depth of the tank doest really matter

ur tank is so overstocked, the needlenose gar needs a 55 gallon tank, and the african butterfly fish will beat up the gar as they are both top dwellers, wait ithink the gar is going to eat it before it hits full grown lmaooo, so are the community fishes, say bb to all of them and get ready to see a stunted gar
actually no. the needle nose won't get but 10 inches, give or take an inch. hes actually not even a member of the gar family. this little bugger is a xenentodon cancila a member of the needlefish family. they are called needlenose gars by the appearance that they give off. you are confusing it with
a member of the lepisosteus family. get your facts before you start making an ass of yourself.
The needlenose will be ok in that size tank. butterfly fish don't just beat up other fish becouse they are also top dwellers, and look the needlenose is still small once they are both fullgrown the needlenose still wont eat it because they can only handle very small fish.
And you can't be sure that the comunity fish will be eaten because you don't even know what it is.
Get your facts straight before you make fucking retard out of your self.
The needle nose gar is actually not even a gar, they just call it a gar fish because of the looks and how much similar it is to the actual gar fish. It's actually a needlefish.
They are not aggresive fish either, only reason why they have teeth is to manuver there prey from the front of their long mouths, to the back to swallow it. It is also there to just hold live food.
They should not be kept in a tank that small 1 they grow up to 16in for 2 they should be kept in schools of 3 or more
agreed - he looks extremely thin. how long have you had him? they are finicky, and mine didn't want to eat for roughly a week after i bought him. what are you giving him? i keep my tank constantly stocked with small to medium rosies and he tends to eat them one a day.
i was thinking of getting a nn gar but i thought maybe i shouldnt house it with my other fish you see i have 2 dragon gobys a pleco and a bichir. can any one help me out?
i used to have an african butterfly... until my heater shattered and he got electrecuted.... i used to feed him bugs from the yard because in the wild they hunt bugs from the surface
I really need to get another butterfly fish :( mine went MIA (fully covered tank).

@drkingslend:
actually, according to recent research, the african butterfly fish is related to the arowana
btw, i'm setting up a tank for an AFB (and only an AFB, no other animals), will 15gal do?

@drkingslend
yeah, i've come to the conclusion that 15gal is too small, even tho i'd only keep one AFB
i guess i'll stick with my reptiles for now and see if i can spare some room for a 30gal

The gar will outgrow your tank.

The "gar" is actually a South American brackish fish. Drop 1/8 cup marine salt into the water and he'll liven up.
Does the butterfly get along with the needlenose? We've got a 100g brackish with an old butterfly, and we're thinking about a needlenose or five.

ballisticnovacannon 3 years ago
don't put a gar of any kind with anything that's not at least 3 or 4 times thicker than it is .
EggsAckley1 3 years ago
the pleco can sucker onto your gar and cause substantial damage because of their lack of your typical-thick fish scales
