When ABC saw this before airing they remarked that it looked like a PBS special because all the jokes and can laughter from the previous specials were absent.
In recent years several older singers have had success producing albums of classic ballads. Clearly, Karen would have had success with this if she was still around. Thanks for posting this show. I did not see it when it originally aired, and Richard thinks it was their best special.
hehehe i think this was the time that Ella had a sicked while she sang with Karen hehehe,.she got stroke with her neck,..hehehe lol,..it was look like stiff neck,.
This is one of my favorite parts of this show, this duet with Ella, two superstars of music, gone but never forgotten, I bet they're still singing up in heaven!
You're right about the fact that Karen was lip-synching and Ella wasn't, but who are you to say that Ella made Karen's voice sound good. Both of their voices sounded good in their own right.
I don't know if it's the lighting in this segment or what... but even though we know that Karen was very very ill at the time this was recorded, she looks especially gaunt and fragile here. The moment is absolutely magical and the joining of these two legends is inspired to say the least... but it's just heartbreaking to know that in just a few short years, Karen was taken from the world. We just have to be happy this exists at all. Thanks again (and again) for posting this!
I want this video on my EF61 phone.

Magnificent and wonderful. I believe the comment that Ella makes to Karen at 3:22 is "BRILLIANT". I surely agree with Ella.

Richard is so boring without Karen. Instead Karen is the most enjoyable act, alone or in good company such in this case. What a loss!!!!

The BEST DUO EVER!!!!

Interesting that they used Karen's 1973 Masquerade vocal track at the beginning of the medley instead of Karen re-recording it in 1980 for the show.

Karen y Ella, qué duo tan divino, no me canso de verlo.

My funny valentine seems to be a song made for Karen - a sonorous melancholy alto voice.

I get chills when I hear Karen sing, "My Funny Valentine" in this special.

at 3:34 Ella says to Karen, "You have a pretty voice" now that's saying something.
kjm4422 4 years ago
Yep, you can see that in the outtakes, without the audience applause.

Oh, wait, I thought you meant something else. At 3:34, I think Ella says, "Take it away".

i think ella said is "sound perfect"

Ella was singing, Karen was lip-syncing. Ella's voice makes Karen's sound range-bound.

Ella also sings Aint Misbehavin on this show. It is on youTube - type in
Ella Fitzgerald on special 1980.
In incredible form!

Yes, now that we have the hindsight, it is easy to look at this (or hard to look at) and see that she was already quite ill.
