  • ppl say natural hair is hard to manage, no, NO ONE EVER TAUGHT YOU how to manage your natural hair

  • This is a black man making astute observations and saying this?? Wow. *clap, clap, clap.

  • gr8 video

  • im going natural

  • I agree with everything you said...more of us black women should wear our hair natural. But, I do have to say that the big reason why we chose relaxers, is because its manageable. I simply don't have hours to devote to styling natural so that it looks professional.

  • "... big reason why we chose relaxers, is because its manageable. I simply don't have hours to devote to styling natural so that it looks professional."

I cant speak for everyone else but Im natural and I dont spend hours stying my hair so it can look "professional". I probably spend the same amount of time if not less doin my hair(and my hair is kinky/ curly n not locked). I had very long permed hair and i'am gaining lengthy natural hair" sorry but your statement sounds like a cop-out.

  • Mann i'm from tha south and bw get away with wearing braids and locks in tha work place and guys can't... It bs 2 me

  • If BM encourage & show support 2 BW there would be change. Media representations need to change as well. I don't want to always blame media because it s not the media that has good v bad hair dichotomy. SOME black families adhere 2 this & it's detrimental.Blk ppl have 2 reframe their discussions about hair. "Good hair" should be healthy hair "bad hair" should be unhealthy and abused hair. Family is the first place where children learn to love/hate themselves. So it should begin @ home.

  • I understand what you are saying you do have some valid points. BWs hair mags should have natural hairstyles that are not theatrical or outrageous. Also the community needs to support BW who do go natural. For example I know a BM who was upset that his mixed daughter didn't have hair like her mothers

( who is Portuguese and Indian) that's madness. I know not all BM have this mentality but BW also need support from BM. The reality is that women beautify themselves to attract men cont...

  • are you trying to say that wearing your hair in weave isnt for the work place. because thats what it sounds like to me

  • Why do people care? If its not your head why do you care. If you are not going to get a sista's hair done then mind your business.

  • i think what people are trying to get bw to realize is that you don't need chemicals to be pretty. as for chemicals you make it other people's business when you put them in your head for everyone to see. especially if you wind up baldheaded. most black girls have. it leaves people to leave their opinions, lol.

  • I understand that but unless they plan on teaching her how to wear it natural then I say don't worry about it. I have seen a lot of videos with people degrading women who have perms or weaves. If you take care of your hair then it will grow. Natural doesn't equate to healthy but perms do eat your hair.

  • Yeah, natural does not equate to healthy. Healthy eating and healthy hair care equates to healthy natural hair. NATURALS SHOULD DO IT.

  • I am natural, from NYm and planning to go to USC or UCLA in the fall. is this only in the corporate world? i expected californians to be more laidback! my chosen profession is either film or journalism so i don't think i would face discrimination.

  • i have been natural for 7 yrs, locked for 6. i graduated college 6 yrs ago and have nvr had an issue getting a job. i am from okla, have lived in ohio, cali, and now illinois. when ppl talk about the job thing...that is some bs.

  • i think its more so your location. my sister is also locked in dc. she moved from LA. it also depends on the industry that york in.

  • oh okay, no need to respond . i just read your response.

  • its intresting that i hear men talk about womens things like this all the time. You dont hear women say men should have their natural hair because most of the time bm have very short to bald heads. I rarely see a bm with a variety of hair styles like i see other races of men- not including dreadlocks of course. Even the biracial men tend to shave their hair so maybe bm are ashamed of their hair perhaps?

  • i'd like to see black hair care magazines with more "wearable" natural hair styles and less processed junk as well. I used to collect magazines by a popular company, but since Im natural now, the styles and stuff don't apply to me.

  • me too! i always see styles with locks in a hundred colores and its always a certain lenght. they dont have variations of natrual hair styles.

  • when it comes to styles, women tend to follow the mainstream media. So if there were positive representations of natural styles then women would probably get them. Right one of the most popular woman out there is beyonce and she has a weave and so does tyra. Women see them as beautiful and want to emulate that. When halle came out u saw the short hair cuts, when janet rocked the braid in poetic justice, women followed that. I even saw wmn with Alicia keyes braids when she first came out.

  • It's just about the styles that are out now. I like short bobs. When your young you tend to follow the trends, when your older you tend to develop your own style. Natural hair is just another look. It looks good but it's not mainstream enough nor is it promoted enough as being beautiful where the majority of the women would where it. But i hear you.

  • well then who controls mainstream media? Not black men. its not black mens' fault that black women want to mainstream into a society that is not created or maintained by them.

I think black women have more control than they portray in terms of their hair. i just feel like they are scared to take the risk so they go with what is comfortable. What makes tyra and other women in her league attractive to black men has more components than just her hair length and texture.

  • I personally am not blaming anyone. It's a personal choice how someone wears their hair. I'm just stating what is.

I can say however that sterotypical feminity is closely associated with longer vibrant hair. So a lot of women tend to get the weaves to get that beautiful "sexy" or youthful look. Different hairstyles give off different vibes. so even though people don't LOOK like tyra or beyonce they still want to have their look. right now the more hair the sexier ur I suppose

  • And black women do have control over their hair but they can't control the responses they get from them. Hair for a lot of bw is a sensitive issue and therefore we can be insecure about it. So if you end up getting more attention or positive feedback from men when you wear the weave vs ur real hair, then a wmn will probably wear the weave.

I never had a weave but I did have longer hair at one point and a friend of mine said my hair was what attracted him to me initially...

  • Now I prefer short hair. I actually love it. To me growing up, the bw who had the short hair always looked very well put together and sophisticated. They just looked very clean. That's the look I want for myself.

A lot of guys don't always like the short hair b/c they think it's too masculine. But I don't have self esteem issues like that to care. But again i can't control the responses anyway.

  • am i the only one who thinks tyra banks looks scary with all that makeup and 25 inch weave? It reminds me of rupaul. it's not natural looking, it's pin straight horselike weave. She doesn't practice what she preaches. What a turn off. She has power in the media and still hides behind all that hair and makeup. I know years of modeling in the 90s has done this to her. But I now see more models like HOLLIS rocking their own afro textured hair on the runway.
