Neil is a superb drummer, no question about it. But before anyone starts getting in a pissing match over who wears the crown, they better get educated about drummers. Start with Billy Cobham, Buddy Rich, Marvin Smith, and Dennis Chambers and work your way outward.
I used to be the biggest Rush fan ever, for over 20 years....Until Tool came along. Now looking back on this, man,the drumming wasnt all thatI remember it to be. I do appreciate the lyical content, always about something cool. Rush has its place in musical history for damn sure. Buddy Rich was the best. Vinnie Colleuto was the best Pocket drummer.
Peart had the biggest set-up and would just bang away. He is more legend that talent as this shows. Check out Mickey Hart and John Kreutzman of the Dead. for this kind of shit.

Dude, Ask most drummers today, who todays best drummers are, and they will either tell its either Niel Peart or Mike Portnoy. I heard some of these new great drummers of today and they are awesome. But they don't have the mastery that Niel has. Niell can litterally play one base double base style. He can play faster and with more authority over all these other drummers, that you feel are so awesome. The guy owns them non stop. There is nothing average about Niel peart.

Neil makes a 5 piece sound like it's one of his huge ass sets. I don't know much about Portnoy though. I've heard he's good though. Other than Neil, in my opinion, Dave Grohl kicks ass. but you can't compare the two of them. Two different genres and styles. Buddy Rich was killer too.

This was a clear off-night for Neil. Even still he was brilliant. When you set your bar to above all, you still outshine the rest when you come close.
There are a lot of technical, fast impressive drummers. What sets Neil apart and in the same way Bonham is what they do for a song. That is really what makes a great drummer. Flash can impress any one.
Your right, sure solo's are cool, but its not the solo's that makes someone the a good drummer. And Neil isn't nessicarily the best. ( I know I spelt that wrong.) Because people have different unique styles of drumming.

There are a few Metal drummers that are amazing, Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater) for one, is phenomenal. Blake Richardson (Between the Buried and Me) is also amazing. There are many others too.

Buddy Rich was the best. Vinnie Colleuto was the best Pocket drummer.
Peart had the biggest set-up and would just bang away. He is more legend that talent as this shows. Check out Mickey Hart and John Kreutzman of the Dead. for this kind of shit.

Most ppl cant tell a good drum solo from a lousy one. Basically every time somebody plays an "exciting" solo ppl think its the best drum solo ever.
I mean, listen to the crowd in this vid when he gets on the cowbell - technique really doesnt make much different to the average listener. All they hear is a drum solo, which either is or isn't exciting, and imho Neil's generally aren't.

Brionman is correct. NP is just a lucky good/average drummer that made it big in an even luckier band. God knows why they are so liked w/mediocre songs, horrible singing.average lyrics,boring guitar(what's that guy's name?)and this for a drum solo for 50 years nightly. It's so underwhelming it's ridiculous. To think drmmers of non playing talent keep idolizing this guy instesd of moving ahead talentwise. Dude, Ask most drummers today, who todays best drummers are, and they will either tell its either Niel Peart or Mike Portnoy. I heard some of these new great drummers of today and they are awesome. But they don't have the mastery that Niel has. Niell can litterally play one base double base style. He can play faster and with more authority over all these other drummers, that you feel are so awesome. The guy owns them non stop. There is nothing average about Niel peart.

@Riptidescool YES! THANK YOU! Everybody today is all about Joey Jordison and Travis Barker. They're alright. But hands down NOT the best! Neil makes a 5 piece sound like it's one of his huge ass sets. I don't know much about Portnoy though. I've heard he's good though. Other than Neil, in my opinion, Dave Grohl kicks ass. but you can't compare the two of them. Two different genres and styles. Buddy Rich was killer too.

There are a lot of technical, fast impressive drummers. What sets Neil apart and in the same way Bonham is what they do for a song. That is really what makes a great drummer. Flash can impress any one.

Your right, sure solo's are cool, but its not the solo's that makes someone the a good drummer. And Neil isn't nessicarily the best. ( I know I spelt that wrong.) Because people have different unique styles of drumming.

I completely agree, I'm not gonna lie, I'm a metalhead too, but I do like rock more. This is an amazing solo and Metalduder06 is fricken retarted. Neil Peart is a drum God, John Bonham comes second, but there definately is a gap.
There are a few Metal drummers that are amazing, Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater) for one, is phenomenal. Blake Richardson (Between the Buried and Me) is also amazing. There are many others too.
But seriously, Neil Peart is by far the greatest drummer of all time.
