This movie rocked. Remeber the Monkey dude that fought? RobotCrypt has an article about where he'd be in the current mma environment. Pretty funny stuff. Just google RobotCrypt and it's their latest article.
Look at 5:00 with the rope training. What that does is not only make you extremely flexible but its main focus is to strengthen the bones, ligaments, and any other connective tissue to the muscles. This results in incredible strength for normal sized guys, Bruce Lee, Jet LI, Jackie chan, and of coarse JCVD for example.
it also enables your joints to hold up against twisting, like the wrist, knee, or shoulder, NEVER attempt at home youll fuck yourself up, find and old japanese badass to teach u
This clip exemplifies the relationship between mind, body, and spirit in martial arts. Physical conditioning is only one aspect of the training process... you cannot succeed without strengthening yourself psychologically and sharpening your instincts.
Man this movie really invokes the human side of the mind, body and spirit. I wish films today had this kind of emotional medium impact that influences significantly the kind of heart-felt criteria. I love it.
I would love to see the bloopers of this film, and when is Van Damme gonna be on the Joe Rogan Podcast? That would be epic! I bet he has some awesome stories.
Yeah growing up, this film was very motivating, not many films can even compare. Watch this film and try to not kick and punch whatevers around you. This was all before energy drinks and N.O. Explode, lol.
if you did thise leg stretching shit at 5.00 it would tear up your muscles you have to stretch for weeks first to make them flexible if you just did this without stretching for a few weeks, it would tear muscles no doubt
@Brady2k10 I sincerely doubt it would tear muscles. Ligaments maybe, but not muscles. Anyhow, the technique does exist, just not in the western world and probably not in this day and age.
@NiggadickJaxHD This will be my same reason too. This training scene helps me meditate and study before an exam. Any time I feel that I am lost of hope or ambition to succeed in life, I think back of this scene to give me encouragement to never give up. I was never a smart kid growing up, nor was I an A honor roll in high school, but I know that if "I keep an open mind" and focus, I will succeed.
if van damme ever dies, i dont know what i'll do. we have lost great ones like bruce lee and his son. but god instead gave us lady gaga and the justin beaver faggot.
I remember when I was a kid.. Van Damme was my rolemodel! I could do splits, and alot of his awesome kicks.. (today i can't do shit, i'd probably break something xD)
But i remember.. At 5:40 in that clip.. That's where i began to understand feelings, and the power they have.. Everytime i see that part of the movie, i see those years of my life passing by.. Such an intense moment just helped me grow up. God, life was so great back then ( Still is, just not in the same way ;P)
@nhisgreat No, this is a scene, not a real fight, this is no martial arts this is american cinema for most of the population, watch an UFC or a K1 fight and you'll see what's a ring fight is
@nhisgreat I'm just a man who's shocking by the foolishness of this movie, where an apparently thaiboxer (the guy of the final fight, but i can't really tell what martial art he does, cause it's no martial art...) is bodybuilded, where the stereotype of the old knowledge master is at his best, where the fans are so impressed by these ridiculous scene who getting rid of all real fighters.
If there's one thing that Jean Claude Van Damme's movies have taught me over the years, it is that a warrior's strength is meaningless without a heart and soul to guide and channel it.
great film, maybe one day george st. pierre can do a documentary film about jcvd's career, lol. They seem so much alike to me.
Man I was fortunate to grow up with these films. Now all kids got is "Faster", and freakingly stupid "expendables". The expendables 2 doesnt have Bolo Yeng, Snipes, Norris, Segal, Van Damme, so no real action stars at all really. And again I just gotta add that expendables was a horrible movie.
@777arcangel77 "Tanaka was played by Roy Chiao (16 March 1927 – 14 April 1999), was a Chinese actor. He is the founder of "Artists' Home," a Christian Fellowship for actors in Hong Kong. @mjfan123085 I've studied the martial arts since I was 9 bud. Traditional TaeKwonDo, ITF, Shotokan Karate, Kickboxing, saying how many arts do you see in MMA is my friend a lame comment. There is a difference between the "Martial Arts", and MMA.. One is for entertainment, the other is meant to kill. And by no means am I saying MMA artists aren't great atheletes, but its far different training to survive then to entertain. I hope my words make sense, I don't want to spark a youtube outcry ;)
@Coads301 LMAO. this is reality, not some MA action flick. Face it, some arts are more practical than others.
Giving 5 year old kids black belts to make money is not the martial way. I honestly can't comment on the training methods of authentic arts. but in the west there are way too many mcdojos.
and I also have been doing MA since I was a kid, so don't get too high and mighty on me PAL.
Also who uses H2H fighting to kill? Even in feudal times they used weapons. It's all nonsense.

What the fuck happened to these style movies.... @nolt2004@nolt2004 No it didn't, infact he is a better actor today than he was than. Of course his youth has faded but his acting skills are much better since he has been clean because he wants to prove himself. Watch Wake of Death (2005), Until Death (2007) & JCVD 2008 to see. Of course we know he is famous for his great athletic abilities and energy on scene. However, here is a great clip to view his acting skills:
search for " JCVD Monologue with English Subs " here on youtube. If you mean the drugs lessened his fame than yes, in the West it has. But he has still been making many movies.
To honor you...Shidoshi.

@nolt2004 @nolt2004 No it didn't, infact he is a better actor today than he was than.
