Lol okay so, my name's Mariah and i've always been told about this song but never heard it before now. That was really cool lol I liked it a lot even though it's old fashioned(: thanks for the video!!
This movie was great, and the critics bombed it. The lead singer with the beard has a marvelous voice, and he played the General in Saving Private Ryan, and also the Father in Law in FARGO. Amazing voice, and this song is a powerful emotion evoking song with the way he lead it.
@TheJannaR That's it Harve Presnell, and he does sound and look like Howard Keel. Gordon Macrae, Howard Keel, and Harve Presnell all have similar looks and voices, and they don't make those kind of movies anymore, and there isn't anyone with their talent anyway. Trivia: James Edward Olmos from BattleStarGallactica was married to Howard Keels daughter, and heard she divorced him after years of physical abuse. Course two sides to every story. But Presnell Great, to end on pos note.
@nocturnalcorruption - I have a habit of humming my own words to songs, an affectionately-humored reaction to situations that arise in my life. May your strapping ;) forebear forgive me for often singing "Pariah" :-P
Man I don't know why they don't bring this back to Broadway, it'll be a smash with the right cast. My favorite line in it was when Lee Marvin is showing the Young Mormon boy around town and you see Harve Presnell in a card game with some farmers. He looks up and says Ben I havn't had a winning hand in five days. Marvin says to the kid don't ever get into a game with him, the kid says I never indulge in games of chance, marvin says back, well neither does he, you couldn't beat him with five aces
I have a tape of this song, BUT it's on a drum of tape that has to be threaded onto the pick-up drum. The tape player no longer turns, tho the rest works: no traction in the motor,on the revolving spindles. The song is followed by the theme of SPACE 1999 which was a hokey scifi drama. The theme music was the best part.
Owing to a hearing problem, I heard Maria(h) as NYRIYA, a Cthulhu Mythos horror !
Great song. By the way, right now it's "Tess"ing outside and we're expecting a big "Mariah" storm later. Think I'll throw another "Fred" on the "Jo" and watch some Hawaii 5-0 on the "Melvin."
My goodness we did this play back in 1967 and sang this great song. Little did we know it would become a movie musical w/the great Clint Eastwood, Academy award winning late great actor Lee Marvin. And the great tenor of Broadway musical fame the late great Harve Presnell. This was to me the best song of the movie, and no one could of sung this song better then Harve Presnell. Brilliant!
Fun fact, the cinematographer to this movie, William A. Fraker (ASC) directed Lee Marvin a year later in an amazing western named Monte Walsh which is easily as good as The Professionals or The Wild Bunch. He also strapped himself to the hood of a speeding Mustang to get some amazing shots as the cinematographer for Bullitt. The sad, dusk, natural lighting in this scene really helps the song's sad tone come across.
@Constavlos They do. THEY call the wind Mariah, it says it right there in the song. The real question is the same asked by that crazy prospector guy from The Wild Bunch: "WHO THE HELL IS 'THEY?!'"
nocturnal - was Harve truly your grandfather? Please email me at tomfelock@comcast.net and let me know. This and "to love you more" by celine dion are my 2 favorites songs as far as beautiful go.
Harve Presnell was a marvelous actor and singer. He did many of the Fifties/Sixties musicals on Broadway and then onto the silver screen. I have always loved this song. The way he sang it, could evoke such a mixture of exhilaration and sadness at the same time..
everyone asks me if this is how I got my name. no actually, I didn't even knew this song exsisted untill someone said, "Mariah? like the wind?" I was confused and he said, "you have a song ya know" thus, I am here!
I love the movie brings so many memories of Christmas time for me. I was 13 1982 and School let out for Xmas and it was snowing by the time I got home from school and I was cold and miserable my mum made me some hot chocolate and I put the tv and this movie came on and I loved it. I loved all the songs this has always remained one of my favourite movies.
THIS is how MY daughters name came to be....I heard this song as a young girl...actually sang by Ed Ames on TV. Fell in love with the song..and the name. I watched paint your wagon later...and of course love this version. Great movie!
There is an old movie named "Paint Your Wagon'', with Lee Marvin, Clint Eastwood, it was fantastic and very popular for the music score. This song "Maria" is the song from the movie sung by actor "Harve Presnell ",. I loved hearing him sing it in the movie, great singing voice
This song isn't even about the great MARIAH CAREY but the haters still here. Why? This so is from a classic play titled "Paint Your Wagon"
Yes Mariah Carey got her name from this song but some people isn't here for her there here for the song. So why don't you take your stupid ass comments somewhere else!
I've been reading through this thread, and I can't believe all the people who are saying that this is someone other than Harve Presnell singing this. Harve was a highly trained Broadway and opera singer who had many parts written around him because of his fabulous singing voice. Why would such a great singer mime this for someone else? I saw this movie in 1970 at the Cooper Cinerama Theater in Denver......it was fabulous, and Harve was definitely the high point of this great movie.
I understand and appreciate the idea of artistic or poetic license. Really, I do. But they call the rain "Tess", the fire "Jo" and the wind "Mariah"? Um, really? I'm skeptical that this has even a thread of basis in western (or any other) folklore. You can't just invent this kind of crazy concept out of nothing and expect people to buy it in what is meant to be a serious song.
XD my parents sing this all the time and my teachers at random moments. But yeah my name Is Mariah Storm Aldrich and so I am WindStorm XD lol pretty wicked.
This man, this fantastic man, is my grandfather. This song used to ring through our house every Christmas and this brings back such wonderous memories. Thank you so for posting this :)
@nocturnalcorruption fantastic actor/singer you are so f----in lucky, I hope you have as many great memories as me, and I only ever saw it on tv etc, all my best wishes
@nocturnalcorruption He had such a beautiful voice. I'm sure I saw in another movie but I can't remember the name of the movie but I think it was a musical he was really good in that movie.
@nocturnalcorruption I first heard your grandfather singing with the Roger Williams Choral group. Easy to pick his voice out because it was so outstanding. Still have his two albums,,,,after rescuing them from my mother who almost wore them out. Truely outstanding voice. Met him backstage when he appeared with Debbie Reynolds in Annie Get Your Gun. When I told him how much and how long I had admired his singing he gave me a great big hug,,,,,,which is still a highlight in my memories.
@nocturnalcorruption . Harve Presnell is you grandfather......singing my favourite song of all time. I have it as a ring tone on my mobile and It must have been fantastic to hear his voice in your home singing this. The film musical is without doubt the VERY best of all musicals and your Grandfather is one of the characters that makes it so with his wonderful baritone voice and this so thought provoking song.
@nocturnalcorruption Wow !! This was the best song in the entire movie as far as I'm concerned. That's saying alot because the movie is filled with wonderful songs. What a joy it must have been to be sitting around the house and hear your Grandfather burst into song.
Many years ago the producer was on the Johnny Carson show and talked about this song and its filming. The cast and crew were near revolt due to a solid week of cold rain spoiling scene after scene.More rain was forecast. The director made a deal with the cast and crew.If he was satisfied with the filming of the song he would cancel filming until Monday, this being Thursday, they shot the scenes and song in one take.Everyone piled onto buses and went to town for hot showers and warm food.
i went to see paint your wagon as a kid when it first came out, with the winnings from the grand national a horse called gay trip, and i also have the lp a brilliant film that i could watch over and over
Not so in America, but I've heard that the songs including this one, were in the top 10 music charts throughout Europe, I love this one, he sang it with so much emotion.
Haha my science teacher plays this song to me all the time because my name is Mariah. Haha and whenever I meet an older person, they always sing this song to me! Haha but it's pretty cool!! (:
@CrazedImagination ME TOO!! My name's also Mariah and every old person just bust out singing this song when I introduce myself. xD It's great. Makes me feel special.
@MissMariahMisfit I know what you mean. I never knew there where so many Mariah's out there the only difference with me is mine is spelt Miriah. But I still get the comments and singing. That is why I finally looked this song up and I dont know if I should laugh, or be grateful or offended that my mom named me Miriah. :)
That is so beautiful- and Harve Presnell put so much into his expressions when he sang it. "Hard-Luck Willie" may not have been a big part, but those few minutes said volumes about the character.
Saw this when it came out, though was pretty young. Really liked it, this song still gives me chills. My French spouse is fascinated by Westerns but generally hates musicals. I'm hoping to get this one from the library for us to see. Greetings from Paris via the USA. Thank you for posting.
I love this song cause my name is Tess Mariah my parents named me after this :D i feel awsome lol <3 my family thinks i control the weather but thats just a joke in the family :3

I wish I had a recording of me as a little boy belting this out. And despite my love of show tunes, I did grow up to prefer women, thank you. :0)

According to IMDB this rendition is sung by Harve Presnell and the movie chorus and is credited in the cast as such.

Not so in America, but I've heard that the songs including this one, were in the top 10 music charts throughout Europe, I love this one, he sang it with so much emotion.

Same singer as in the musicals Seven Brides for Seven Brothers and Kiss Me Kate... it's Howard Keel. Beautiful voice.

@CrazedImagination ME TOO!! My name's also Mariah and every old person just bust out singing this song when I introduce myself. xD It's great. Makes me feel special.
MissMariahMisfit 9 months ago 2
@MissMariahMisfit I know what you mean. I never knew there where so many Mariah's out there the only difference with me is mine is spelt Miriah. But I still get the comments and singing. That is why I finally looked this song up and I dont know if I should laugh, or be grateful or offended that my mom named me Miriah. :)

That is so beautiful- and Harve Presnell put so much into his expressions when he sang it. "Hard-Luck Willie" may not have been a big part, but those few minutes said volumes about the character.
Mariposa0416Annie 10 months ago
@Mariposa0416Annie He did a terrific job. I thought Clint did good in the movie, singing, but he hated it.

Saw this when it came out, though was pretty young. Really liked it, this song still gives me chills. My French spouse is fascinated by Westerns but generally hates musicals. I'm hoping to get this one from the library for us to see. Greetings from Paris via the USA. Thank you for posting.

Harve Presnell was great as the ill-fated scout in 'The Glory Guys' and the no nonsense father-in-law in 'Fargo'; both non-singing roles.
