Rantalas' drumming is tight ( so is Gas'), and his approach is more energetic and with different dynamics than Gas, that's one part I miss. The keyboard here has a deeper, stronger and more passionate sound to it and Ville is showing a lot of his vocal capabilities, all of which together interlocks with the heavy guitar sound, and the bass, creating this amtosphere and groove which I prefer to the newer sound. But that's just my opinion.

Gas is also very good, the issue is that they don't play this kind of music anymore, so it's kind of hard for him to get to show off his skills.

Same goes for Linde... it took him 15 years in HIM (or more) to finally show the world what a killer player he actually is (not that most of us didn't know already)... and he did it in a Daniel Lioneye record.

It goes to show that HIM is not a "technical" band for virtuoso musicians to show off their skills, which in my mind it's a good thing.

Thing is, there was something about their old style that actually would evoke certain feelings resembling limerence. It's very difficult to describe. This would be both in the music and in the lyrics. Not to say that American style is bad but... all those deep captivating emotions just aren't present in American music, whether people admit it or not : P They definitely need to spend more time in Europe getting inspiration.
