Start how you mean to continue with a person. I don't believe that you should hide Jesus until people think you are cool or "trust" you and then say "hey Jesus, you can come out now - I'm cool, so you'll be cool". "This person trusts me now so I can show them what I've been hiding all this time!"
What happened with the guy in the surf shop? I can't help but think that these people need someone to trust before they make a decision for Christ. Jesus spent an awful lot of time with people, and led by example, not a drive by type of evangelism.
