Dream Theater are always being slagged off because they ''show off''. My boyfriend is constantly putting them down saying they don't have any talent in song writing, Everyone who says this is wrong. They don't understand the level of skill that goes into their music.Seeing them for the 4th time next month. Hell yuss!!
our teens now-adays, no wonder theres so much suffering and pain.... theyv lost all compassion .... noone understands truley till its happened to them i guess
"The Dream Theater guys are technical and can play fast, but they suck because they are bad in songwritng." To anyone that has ever said that, here is this song to prove you wrong.
@BloodHarvest21 agree, for sure the stupid who wrote that listen some shit, DT is amazing by making music, they really feel the music, just listen in their last album the song Beneath the surface.
I just love how diverse Dream Theater's music is....from prog. metal, to prog rock, and even to ballad-like songs like this...exactly why DT is my favorite band
Come on, people. Child abuse is nothing to be joked about. It ruins innocent people's lives forever. This is a beautiful song with a very serious subject matter, and you should be ashamed of yourself if you find something like this funny.
The organ sucks in this song. I really dislike how much organ is used by both Kevin and Derek in the records from the '90s. Great song, though, despite the distasteful organ. This album has a few good'ns on it.
@PlataniumIdiot Do ya? Organs can be good from time to time, I just didn't find them particularly good in this song. I'd prefer to hear straight piano. But that's just me :D
I was always told it was about a terminally ill girl coming to the end of her life. hence the line "let her breathe the air", because she could not survive with a oxygen cylinder. but as Labrie says, its always open to different interpretation
@AngusYoungForMayor I can list countless times in which dream theater has reused melodies from other songs. i think they use the melodies to trace certain topics back to others and give hints at the songs meaning.
This song is such a departure for DT...like a Beatles/John Lennon ballad. If you enjoyed this one, here's a couple others to check out: "Laura" by Billy Joel, "He's a Good Lad" by Bread, "Goodnight my love" by Dennis DeYoung, "Life Is Real" by Queen, "Lost Without Your Love" by Bread, and "Where's The Orchestra?" by Billy Joel. Those are some good ones. :)
@MrMickel11 Labrie said this song is about pretty much anything the listener makes of it. I, for one, also think this is about a girl who has been abused, but remember there is no right interpretation for this song.
XD, first of all, Dream Theater has a piano, Genesis has Tony Banks, a legend. But, if it was dificult to you to listen the entire song, just listen min 1:40 and you will see it. Im not saying it is the same song, just a phrase
@xXSTFDXx I just say the first notes, the first chords, not the entire song. I'm not saying it's plaggio, maybe it's something like a tribute, or not. Firth of Fifth, when they make the change between "they've seen the way to leave" and "he rides majestic" (1:40), this is the moment im talking, maybe i didn't explain very well.
@1banez I just say the first notes, the first chords, not the entire song. I'm not saying it's plaggio, maybe it's something like a tribute, or not. Firth of Fifth, when they make the change between "they've seen the way to leave" and "he rides majestic" (1:40 on Firth of Fifth), this is the moment im talking, maybe i didn't explain very well. I don't know why are you talking about metallica, cause you don't know what i use to listen just beacuse of my nick.
@NailsForDinner I just say the first notes, the first chords, not the entire song. I'm not saying it's plaggio, maybe it's something like a tribute, or not. @Hetfieldmet their bass player in Liquid Tension is from Genesis...so no surprise there. I hear bits of Saga, Rush, Genesis, and Yes in DT all the time. No doubt these bands all influenced what we hear from DT because they were the progressive musicians of the 60', 70's, and 80's. Back when DT was just wee pups getting better every day.
This is great. I love this band, one of my favorite now. And to say only a few months ago I had no idea who they were. I think this is the only album I dont have now. Oh yeah, Systematic Chaos alos... anyways, James Labrie as always soudns awesome. Possibly the greatest singer alive today.
Same thing has happened to me. It's been a week and a half to two weeks since I became a fan, and they've already become one of my two all-time favorite bands. Of their albums, I have WHEN DREAM AND DAY UNITE, IMAGES AND WORDS, AWAKE, A CHANGE OF SEASONS, FALLING INTO INFINITY, ONCE IN A LIVETIME, METROPOLIS PT. 2: SCENES FROM A MEMORY, SIX DEGREES OF INNER TURBULENCE, and TRAIN OF THOUGHT.
And you're 100% right. James' voice is super-awesome.
@KieferSuth1985Marx I would like to have Scenes From New York... I have all their studio albums, getting WDADU and FII was tough. FII was kinda mediocre thugh, at least incomparison to the rest of their stuff. If you havent already, you should check out Liquid Tension Experiment, its a side project of Mike Portnoys. Oh, and all their side projects kick ass, that one just kinda stands out.
I've gotten to hear some of their side stuff, like Liquid Tension, and Transatlantic. They're awesome.
As far as Dream Theater's albums are concerned, I just bought BLACK CLOUDS & SILVER LININGS. I just need to get LIVE FROM THE MARQUEE, LIVE SCENES FROM NEW YORK, LIVE AT THE BUDAKON, SCORE, SYSTEMATIC CHAOS, GREATEST HIT (...AND 21 OTHER PRETTY COOL SONGS) & OCTOVARIUM.
God Bless! Phenomenal tune and muscianship, as always. Love you guys!
