Just to give a bit of update, After a month of repairing, it works just like a charm. My Sony TC-580 is up and running for now. I cleaned the heads and it works perfectly and then, the left and right arrow lights actually works and the VU meter on the left channel while recording and playback has restored in tape mode. I might give you an update on that later!
About a week and a half ago, I fixed my Sony TC-580 due to an issue with the capstan wheel being frozen. After so many lubrications, it works perfectly and tape starts moving! I fixed it and it's ready to run! As I said, I have the same exact model but it's missing the head cover and a pinch roller cover. No big loss on that.
I have this one, it's in the box with some VHS tapes there, but I'm not going to open it, because my mom will get into trouble. I took a peek at it inside in one of those holes. That's the reel-to-reel tape recorder that my uncle gave me, but I'm not going to show you until my next video in the coming weeks.
The weak left channel may not be a head issue. The TC-580 had a notorious issue with their record/playback switch inside the deck getting dirty and having issues. I have one that has the lower channel problem intermittently. The reliability problem stems from the auto reverse function which rather than relying on sensing foil like every other auto reverse reel to reel, this one used a dedicated head to look for equal length blank space on either side which led to random reversing.
I'd think the Akai would be great if you can get a decent price for a good one. I've never had an Akai 8-track, but I have seen them on the Net and they sure are nice!
@CassetteMaster great news!!!! I bought a technics (panasonic) RS-858US player off ebay ...after about 3 years of collecting and 600 or so tapes later, I have given up on finding one at a garge sale
btw do you have any shortwave/AM radio (they made some really nice fancy looking sold wood pieces in the 1930s-1940s...would be great if you could upload a vid of one)...I have my grand pa's radio...has no power to it but its quite nice looking
Hey there Ricky do you have any other quad decks or is this one your first one? As I posted a few weeks ago my first in a long time machine, but not a quad, but just a basic.
HH Scott made some of the best vintage speakers back then (the 60's/70s). Not too much bass but very coherent and high quality, tight bass. The S15 was a favorite, less jazzed-up/tinny than
the ARs, Advents of the day, and not as dull/rolled-off as the larger KLHs. (The KLH 17 was the nicest KLH). The ADC 303AX was another goodie.
I think I had a Sansui Amp/Receiver like the one here. I forget the model number. It was a nice unit, but the tuning cord broke on it! That is an AWESOME Sony unit! And your bargain hunting is amazing! You seem to get the best deals! Thanks fr showing off your machines.
Those reel-to-reel decks have near CD quality sound and can't even campare to a cassette tape. If fact many music artist still use them to record their music to give it a warmer sound. Most older CD's have AAD or ADD or DDD on them, the A meaning analog(reel-to-reel).

Dude you sound like a fucking gay Ben Stein, respect though for the Sansui. WTF is with the the you speak, I think I got about 10 diffrent accents, and wuufer? wtf man. HH Scott sucks. I have four 10 way Technics speakers that beat the Piss out of those.
Rickey some humor, when the people called you back to get the eight track deck did you mean they had it setting out for trash pickup ? its a good deck just kidding.
Very cool Quad 8-track deck, I do have a quad deck (a tank) with a built in quad amp! I almost bought this exact techinics deck. It looks like a good Q8 deck, but I was about to pay premium....your lucky to get that for free!!! AHHH I cant find anything around where i live, i have to pay crazy shipping. I wish the quad deck had dolby noise reduction, it is key for proper playback and quality, thats why I love my pioneer H-R100
Nice speakers. I used to really like the Scott S15 3-way speakers from 1970 that were packaged with the Scott compact stereo system. Not a lot of bass, but a very integrated, driverless sound with a liquid midrange and smooth highs. Finally bought Dynaco A25s instead, but it was a close call. The Scotts were much more well defined and musical than ARs or KLHs at the time, and never got the respect they deserved.
(All IMHO.) Thanks for the great videos and good luck.
Loved the A25s. Had the same pair for almost 30 years and finally gave them to a friend. Used an AR XA turntable w/Shure V15-2 and AR receiver. Experimented with "improvements" like Advents, Infinitys, even bigger Dynacos (A50s) and found nothing could top the A25s. They were way ahead of their time. A real classic. (Next classic: Apogee Stages from 1995.)
nice stuff. I have a 9090db. there was recently a Technics SA-1000 sold on ebay for three grand. 330 watts (real watts, not today's watts). weighs about 95 pounds. lol
i once had a sansui quad receiver but i accidently hooked a speaker with a transformer on it and blew one of the channels out and it started smoking, but didn't knew that was going to happen. what a dumbass i was back then when i was 14 and that was a good receiver too and wasted $10 right there.
Ahh, Ricky, so envious of some of your equipment, but you really have excelled this time. The Quad 8-track I want NOW! Great deck, even with the pause and FF drawbacks. I have about 7-8 quad 8-tracks and would love themm transered to CD one day, but nothin' to play them on. If you ever wanna sell...? hehe Great video!
usually the control board (play reverse Rec ff rw) is broken IC's and things. you can't order those new because sony made them and therefor are rare types!!
That R2R can record in reverse?? That's weird, can you explain how that works? Also all that stuff is cool. I heard a smashmouth song "Might as well be walkin on the sun". Classic band

no offense but those hh scott speakers seem like trash to me. I ownly play music through 5 way speakers such as pioneer cs 99s or technics sb g910s.

@banksstinger Pioneer cs99s are junk compared to pioneer hpm 100s .

im jealous :( all I have is a stereo cnadle 8 track recorder :(
im looking at 2 quad players, I like the Panasonic RS-858US because of the features it has (eject etc)
but I hear the Akai CR-80D-SS is better quality (and it appears on ebay more often)
which one should I buy? thanks

What's your favorite 8 track deck out of all the ones you own?
What's supposedly the nicest deck out of all the ones you own?
The8TrackNutcase 1 year ago
Deckwise the Realistic TR-801 or the Panasonic RS-858US.
CassetteMaster 1 year ago
Supposedly the Akai GXR-82D is the greatest deck ever made... With that is the Akai CR-80D-SS, and the Technics in this video is up there as well.
eyg2181 1 year ago
Would you say the Technics RS-858US is nicer than the Panasonic RA-6600?

THey are both very nice.

Where can I buy a 8-track deck in 230 volts?
AllanPoyhonen 3 years ago
Maybe eBay or flea markets, you should find one somewhere. If you can't, you could get a voltage converter transformer to step down to 120.
