There are theories that Korean and Japanese have roots in Shanghainese. They have like the same sort of tones, but it is just a theory of course.

it sounds like Korean because it has a similar sound system, and Shanghainese tones are few and don't rise or fall like most other dialects of Chinese, so it almost doesn't sound tonal. Also, Shanghainese makes use of a lot of pure vowels and comparatively few dipthongs. All of this makes it sound like Korean or Japanese.
