I have heard many recordings of the fourth concerto, but I have NEVER heard anyone play the opening bars of that concerto as quickly or clearly as Kissin. It seems to be a segment that many virtuoso pianists struggle to play clearly.
Como dice Sir Davis, Kissin es técnicamente supremo, casi perfecto, por eso es uno de los mejores 5 pianistas en los últimos 100 años. Simplemente magnífico.
Kissin is the greatest living, performing pianist. Alfred Brendel has retired, otherwise he would still hold that honor. The astonishing thing about Kissin is, as mentioned in the video, his absolute mastery of technique, perhaps unmatched. And interpretationally Kissin is a master as well, though it is his incredible technical mastery which puts him alone at the top.
@demosj He didn't quit the piano in favor of conducting. Ashkenazy had already mastered the piano and recording ALL of the major repertoire. He had nowhere else to go but to a different field entirely.
@goodguysdoll Most of the great pianists mastered the piano and recorded all of the major repertoire, but Horowitz, Cortot, Hofmann Gilels and Richter didn't quit the instrument did they?
I agree with what the commentators have said about Evgeny. We are so lucky to have a young man of our time playing with such talent, dedication and most of all the truth f the music.
Anton Dikov and Yuri Termikanov made cleaner and more stirring recordings of these concertos. To me, Robert Casadesus is still unbeatable playing the Fifth Concerto.
I was fortunate enough to work on these sessions as an assistant engineer. The LSO and Kissin were an amazing combination!!! Huge credit must go to the engineer Arne Akselberg who did a wonderful job in recording this music!
This is truly a wonderful set; for a long time, the Perahia-Haitink recording was my absolute favorite...but this, if possible, is even better. Bravo! to Kissin, Davis, and EMI!!!!
He is not only gifted, but also the most diligent player i've ever known. world class musicians tend to digress on the way quite often, but kissin was totally devoted to music itself his entire life. We all love him, and i hope he achieves even greater musical beauty and perfection.
@emiclassics Do you know anything about the release of both Brahms' concerti with Kissin and James Levine? I hope they come out some time in the near future.
he remind me of tom hanks somehow ..interesting

@bnull240 I'm speaking of the rondo of course, not the first movement.

Love Kissin, but I think Argerich can give him a run for his money...just my opinion.

I love the irony in Ashkenazy's speech, considering he quit the piano in favor of conducting. XD

Lang Lang has nothing on Kissin!

@gold3c Agreed, one is a flashy showman, the other an unaffected, consumate artist. I;m sure I dont have to name names in my assessment.
meredith21846 2 years ago
Oh how can they be compared like this? Evgeny is a true master while Lang Lang...well I don't know how to describe... a show-off-er?

I LOVE Lang Lang's channelling
but Evgeny is sheer perfection:
does the emotional identification produce the technique
or does the technique release the music ??
I'll take both.
johngotwalt 3 years ago
It's not perfection if there have been better pianists in the past is it ? Rubinstein, Rachmaninoff, Horowitz.

Interesting. I'm just curious--where is this footage from?
I find the comments by Ashkenazy, who himself is well-known for being an extraordinarily diligent "study bug" of music, to be very fitting.
