  • she beats the hell out of johnny depp as far as pickin and singin goes

  • Très belle musique, j'aime vraiment beaucoup. Bisouss Gaby

  • i like this version so much better than the ugly blues singers.

  • she hit the genetic BINGO

beautiful to gaze upon and beautifully sung

  • Adorei essa versão!! Muito charme!!!

  • so white

  • @harmonicadijo ENTIEREMENT D ACCORD .

  • Her vocals lack any emotion whatsoever. I don't like this version. Nope, I don't like it one bit.

  • lovely but her beauty affects my blood flow her voice makes it even worse but a nice slant on that famous song

  • If she was ugly this would be completely inconsequential.

  • Obviously some people don't realize she DATED Clapton. Hello! And she does a damn good take, PERIOD. Get over it. If you like Clapton so much better, then don't watch her take!

  • La pire version figurant sur you tube. Affligeant !

  • do i really need to say that bessie smith's version is a HUNDRED times better??

  • Marvelous, simply marvelous. Eric Clapton also did this...

  • come on! even tho she's Madame Presidente she's talented goddamn!

  • 1:38 jon hamm on the strings. this lady is fine, her voice is a bit wispy but i like her style.

  • purumpuru? what is she doing? she's fine voice and plays guitar well but com'n could'not she said mentioned clapton? she's playing his cover !

  • @AZARTI5 Why SHOULD she mention Clapton?. The song was covered by at least 50 people. It was written in 1920s. At least know what you're talking about before spewing your poison.

  • @croft88 this is clapton's version that's why. the very first version clapton covered was in derek dominos, and that version is completely different from this one but when he had solo unplugged concert on mtv, he re covered it and re introduced acoustic version of this song. listen to that one and then to this one, and if you don't see similarity, just bury me !

  • My Lord, she's sexy.

  • is that Andy Dick on guitar solo?

  • bioshock 2 =D

  • where can I find the teri hatcher version of this.

  • menos onda q bandera de chapa, aguante claton !

  • I just dig this chick---especially when she imitates a trumpet.

  • Soul missing.

    Missing soul.

    No blues.

    Superficial. Gaudy. Mechanical. Empty.

  • both terrific and horrible

  • Even thought this is a popular tune, not even Bessie Smith wrote it. I read it was Jimmy Cox. I think this cover of Eric Clapton's version is very nice, but couldn't she play her own version and make it her own? even the solo was almost copied note by note. At least she could acknowledge it. As for the comments about Eric singing it, he does because he is a true musicologist and he has rescued so many popular tunes that were lost in time. Chapeau to both, Eric and Carla. My favorite is Derek...

  • Thanks for posting. Kind of understated, but that doesn't make it insipid, seems to me. However, the guy playing lead on the Gibson was a little distracting with his guitar waving and wiggles ...

  • MOUAIS.... On va écouter Bessie Smith plutôt....

Wanna fly back to the sixties... :'(

  • She failed when she tried to mimic the trumpet solo

  • Pétasse ...et opportuniste

  • I found this vid from listening to Bessie Smith. Where's the emotion? It's just so ......dry.

  • a lovely version.

i dont care if she is living a luxury life or if she live in the streets, she sing it that good that you can fly.

and she is beutiful! too much beutiful!

  • stopped by out of curiousity, stayed to listen. Not bad at all ....

  • I don't like Carla Bruni. But... this is good.

  • still like eric clapton's version better:)

  • I like her voice but I wish she would have given the song a bit more feeling to it

  • I like the way she is doing this... and if you don't then you're not a true fan of good music. That's just it!

  • Never heard her sing before, she sings well and with feeling, nice...

  • Comment removed

  • I still dig this chick.

  • poor guitar solo

  • Bravo Carla !

    Buona musica !

    A presto

    Black Sunday

  • this song isn't by clapton idiots, and she is playing it fine

  • Comment removed

  • @MrWebdrone well... Bessie Smith isn't Clapton, right?

  • This is a very good version, and I'm grateful it exists. Her voice with the accent....totally ROCKS. Also, her version of "You got the silver" is amazing.

  • she can sing..so u all shut up ..loosers ...who the fuck u r to judge

  • shes the reason why i noticed and appreciate this song .... now its my all time fav. real life song ..

  • I love her soulfulness on this song. As a guitar player myself, I personally wouldn't have her singing that semi-doo-doo-dooing right before the guitar lead...it took away from this beautiful rendition of a Clapton classic. Other than that, it was really nice to hear and a change of pace.

  • CLAPTON IS GOD

  • @bawmman It's not a Clapton song. He just covered it.

  • She sucks.

  • @sheepOG

I bet she does. You do not get to roll in the hay with alphas like Mick Jagger or M. Sarkozy if you do not.

She probably does it better than anyone that either of us will ever get to know.

    She can sing, too.

Plus, she has the money to get decent musicians and soundmen to make the stuff sound pretty darn good.

I would not buy the record, though, not even the iTune.

  • eric clapton!

  • dmarkg58

I think it was written by Jimmy Cox in 1923. To all the other critics I suggest you purchase an instrument, learn to play, put your video on u tube and then see the shit that the public throw at you. If you cant say something nice dont say anything

  • Written by Hoagy Charmichael I believe.

  • yo...just the fact that shes knows the song and sings it with her soul...mad respect from me

  • VOMITS IN MOUTH LOL

  • @broodm - I get your point but remember Clapton started singing this on Layla long before "Tears in Heaven". Despite what these dolts on here think you need to listen to a singer sing a song and decide if you like it. That is all. I happen to not like her version but it not because she has money, hell if that were the case I wouldn't like any stars. I just think it is a poor choice for her voice.

  • listening to this after Alberta Hunter, makes me want to throw up =P

  • This is very tired! There is no energy or pathos in this performance. This song is about the emotion of losing and bouncing back and keeping your humanity! This is just flat.

  • Blasphemy

  • How fucking DARE you rich bitch. What really do you know about being down and out? An obscenity. Crap version. Crap voice. Crap accent. Good musicians luckily.

  • @nondescript11 red neck

  • @nondescript11 Sucks to suck...

  • Impossible not to despise or hate this girl! Born on a mattress of dough, she always wants more. An Jewish pawnbroker ego. But a soul can not be bought at Cartier. And her aping of our greatest direct-from-soul songs , Bessie, and the most Lady among ladies : Lady Day.. Carla's gesture is an annoyingl obscenity. But how could she print. She looks as a 2D imitation of a Barbie woman .

Tragical. The top of ever french blues: Edith Piaf "Dans ma rue " Music is only an ornament when soul sings.

  • @BOOOZB Try a less anti-Semitic tone if you want to prove a point.

  • Now listen to the original by Bessie Smith. Its better.

  • I love when she makes that muted trumpet sound with her mouth. So sexy!

  • The stupidity of making fun of her because she is living a life of luxury is only matched by your stupid slobbery worship of Clapton singing this. When was the last time that guy was down and out. Hard to lose hundred million.

  • @6stringdaveyM lol at clap reference he was probably down since tears in heaven.

but your right there are a lot of stupid people in this world that pretend like they know everything

i wish they could all just rot in hell

  • @6stringdaveyM best quote ever.

  • @6stringdaveyM

Try getting hooked on heroine and see if your not down and out.

  • @6stringdavey Clapton turns this song into a MOR bland piece of background music. Like his version this one goes nowhere near the majesty of Bessie's original and I feel is pointless. However if she wants to sing it............

  • @6stringdaveyM LMAO

  • @6stringdaveyM

I'm quite sure that Clapton felt both down and out when his toddler son fell out of a window in a highrise and died, actually. I don't know about you, you might not care about such trivial matters, but my son dying would make me feel down and out no matter how much money I had.

  • @6stringdaveyM the wealth/power card isn't a good one to play when you're defending Carla Bruni..

  • i love this women... her songs are just awesome

  • strange but.... not bad

  • @WillguitGp This song isn't actually her. She's just covering it.

  • she's well amatuerish. shit at guitar

but i'd still get up in that

  • too much like the clapton version, but listenable :)

  • i wish she sings with more risk this song, not so soft

  • @romarina she has no power in her voice, so this is most likely the only way she can sing it.

  • I could listen to this woman sing all day. Wonderful!

  • I think I've just changed my opinion on this woman, even the fact that she's heard of this song must count for something. Plus she sings it great! :)

PS IS that HARRY HEEDLE playing the guitar??? That's a double surprise if it's him!

  • I think I've just changed my opinion on this woman, even the fact that she's heard of this song must count for something. Plus she sings it great! :)

  • Let's face it... it will never touch Bessie Smith and BB King... but that accent makes up for it!

  • very nice!!!!!!! ... bravo Carla!!!!...

  • BIXOUSSSSSS

  • Now i feel like punching Nicolas Sarkozy, curse you Sarkozy lucky bastard!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I don't think it would be half bad, if she said 'eric clapton' instead of bessie smith. cuz thats what it sounds like.

  • @psychoticline She did say Bessie Smith. Yay!!!!!

  • Once I lived the life of a millionire... what a disrespect to Bessie that this pampered doll sing this... Its stupid.

  • @enagyb everyone can play the blues, rich or poor who cares, black or white who cares. Plus the song was written by Jimmy Cox not Bessie (although she made it famous).

  • Is there any DVD of this performance?? I'd like to get it...

  • poor Bessie...

  • very nice carla!!!

  • Pas mal pour une ...hehehe .. not bad for a First Lady .

  • what a good interpretation! didnt expect all this stuff! very good

  • Guys, hate to say something so cliche- but can't we just appreciate music. Despite the kind of glamorous life this singer apparently leads- no human is immune from hardship, be it external or internal. Its simply naive to assume that because she's rich shes never felt "down and out". I think she has every right to sing a beautiful song and it helps that she has a beautiful voice to match it.

  • @Polkendotts

    Beautifully said! Thank you!

  • AmOoOoO brazil!!!!!!

  • When a slapper sings Dylan that doesn't make her a Joan Baez. Eva Braun herself was said to be pretty and tasteful.

  • She can't play the guitar

  • she can't sing this as good as Nina.

  • Absolute murder.

  • love this song!

  • she doesn't have the feel to play this song and i'm not talking about the fact that she can't relate in any way to the song, it's just not in her

  • who did she say write the song? it's by jimmy cox dated 1923?!

  • bah

  • This is a blues song, not some feel good rag timey ditty. Her voice and the music sounds fine, but you are coming at it all wrong.

Not to mention the irony already pointed out.

  • @Jermofoot

Your right on. What's next - 'The Ballad of Hollis Brown' Spike Jones-style?!

  • What a travesty it is even worse than Claptons version! She takes a great song and delivers it with a total lack of emotion feeling. The arrangment is too cheerful. Bessie's original is still the best and always will be.

  • an ironic choice of song perhaps? like when clapton did it

  • @TheMrDobbins

but Clapton version is the BEST EVER!!! :)

  • @Joyfather76

Ever heard of Nina Simone, you poor sheltered fella?

  • much better than the Clapton's shitty version_^

  • @theWARMJET

    Get your ears checked?

  • a kazoo will have done it better at 2:04 ;)

  • Sexy tart

  • "nobody knows you when you're down and OUT" !!! But since she can't read, and never took time to listen to Bessie Smith...

  • I Love Carla Bruni. "Quelqu'un m'a dit"

  • wow, Carla is really good! I'm impressed, not only is she beautiful, she is an artist!

  • 82 are no-culture people.

  • 82 are no-culture people

Pierre

  • This is a joke! The model wife of the French president singing this song? You gotta be kiddin'! "Down an'doubt", indeed!

  • Honteux.

  • Very well done ! ...

(.. this is one of the best "Slowhand" blues tunes , i have listened his

versions hundred of times , Bessie was legend , so no need to comment her...)

  • We in America like Carla Bruni, because she is both hot and cool, but you guys in France should consider retiring at 62 to be a good deal.

In the States, it is 65, and some people want to raise it to 70.

  • Yeah right!Kick out the romany and snatch the pension rights of French workers..tell your husband, nobody knows when your down and out allright....F O!Ferme ta guelle he con!

  • Actually, the real problem is that she is asthmatic, stupid, and that she can't play guitar. But, yeah, she is pretty (and I like the other guy's solo.)

  • nice solo Louis !

  • shes beautiful and sings the song wonderfully. love to be down and out/in with her anytime!

  • I really do not fancy blues, but this swings a lot...

  • YouTube is a forum to listen to music and make comments about the performance.

Well, she performs very well. I don't understand what all the other comments are all about. The lady married the cool president of France and is not only a good looking woman but an accomplished singer besided she speaks a flawless English...

    Good for you Mrs. Bruni-Sarkozy!

  • She should spread legs rather than sing and 'play' that poor guitar.

  • Irrespective of her physical beauty, nice voice etc It is just TRAVESTY she sings this song. Songs like this belong to those who have lived it or are living it so she fails bigtime. This song does not belong to her and never will. It is a song birthed from suffering and steeped in deep meanings than a retro trend take on it.. It is a song for the faceless millions that societies not care a damm for.

  • @MissBristles so what you're saying is: you can't sing a song unless it actually applies to you.... well Eric Clapton, B B king and Bessie Smith ALL sang it.... none of them were broke when they sang it... so are they all to be slated too.... .. 99% of songs would naver be performed if your criteria were applied. so. don't ever let me catch you singing it unless you're homeless and in rags....

  • Somewhere Bessie Smith is rolling in her grave.

  • she plays guitar like an elephant...
