my pioneer sa-610 amplifier has a switch a lot like that for the input selector.
it has a normal switch direcly on the front, which controls the input indicators above the vu-meter (tuner, phono, tape, aux), and then such a cable goes to the back of the amp, where another switch switches the input signals.
