The approach was not stabilized. He was rolling on short final and way too high. Also, he kicked the rudder over before the mains were down and spoilers applied; by kicking the rudder over too soon he caused the crosswind to get under the right wing and start to turn the plane. He/She made the better call to balk and go around once it was clear that it was past the point of salvage. THIS is why we have recurrent pilot training -- they are NOT overpaid bus drivers.
It's so super stupid to let a plane land in some scary conditions. I think ATC was an idiot and the pilot also, because he (or she, heard it was her, woman) shouldn't accept directions from ATC. Weird, really. This wind could have killed them...
Oh my goodness, that's insane. Don't know how I'd cope in that kind of xwind. I agree with whoever says Lufthansa or whoever are bloody at fault for that landing, not the pilot. As the old adage goes, the inexperienced pilot is still flying in bad weather, the experienced pilot is returning to the airfield and the most experienced is on the ground. Poor bloke, lucky for the passengers that he made the right call. Good on him. :)
and the worst part is, you pay a shit load of money to Lufthansa, for being taken at risk like this. Come on these pilots are moroons. Never again Lufthansa. This company is a shame to the airline industry ...
@kubatova1 What does it have to do with the pilots? If anyone is at fault for launching a flight in those conditions it's the people who are responsible for planning the flight. The pilots have little to nothing to do with that, and in this case the pilot tried his best to land this, and when he saw he can't he went for a second run, like every regular pilot would do.
Not the case at all, any moron knows the weather is erratic and can change from the time you plan and take off to when you land, this is why pilots are regularly tested for this. Pilot is awesome! Say no more!
German authorities have discovered that after the the landing gears of the plane touched the ground the plane computer switched into "non-flight" mode.
The pilots where not able to make the right manoeuvres for about three seconds until they switch manually to an emergency-mode, that is why they couldn't avoid that touch with their wing. Airbus is updating now in his software ;-)
@mharrop396 You know, what you say sounds clever. For just about one fifth of a second. It may or may not be better the 2nd time, who knows? but it sure was not a good idea to land that time.
@levend98 no shithead,it was training and practice on the part of a REAL person that made that happen not some invisible sky spook, give all the credit to the person actually flying it,,,good grief, when will you jesus freaks learn?
@TomUytterhoeven What in the hell are you talking about fuckhole? All I said was he should have aborted earlier. So, cockhole smartass what about my comment below is "know it all"...fuck you.
I never get tired of watching this.He never should have tried to put it down though.Should have aborted waaay earlier.Like before he even lowered the gear.
I wouldn't say the pilot did such a good job. Part of the problem (besides the conditions, of course) was that the pilot straightened the plane too high on the runway and that was what almost caused him to slam the ground with the left wing.
omg.. that pilot was so smart saving the others people life ...in the accident of colombia the other pilot diring thnikg that , that's why they had the accident !!!!! that pilot was more smart !...
That wasn't Lufthansa's fault! In fact, this video should encourage you to fly with them. The pilot of that plane had to use a lot of skill to save that plane. Some airline pilots might have been less successful...
he should have aborted the approach when he realized he missed much length of the runway cause u need some space for braking as well or it would have been the seen similar to air france accident which ran out of room and crashed!!!
this is bad piloting. The pilot should have added more right aileron input as he was pressing on the left rudder, that should keep the airplane from drifting to the left. Another reason to keep that right wing down is not to allow the wind to pick it up like it did in the video and have a possible wing strike on the left side.
actually an investigation showed that the computer of the airplane switched to "ground mode" as soon as the left wheel accidentely touched down, what supposedly caused the airplane to drift away.
i can't give more details, but i read such an explanation in recent news.
Apparently it was a software problem. The computer switched to ground mode as soon as the first tire touched the runway. As a result, the pitch elevator unexpectedly did not allow for sufficient counterbalancing for a couple of seconds, until the computer was reset and put back into flight mode by the pilot.
the wind was way over the max crosswind for the aircraft type, so the captain was crazy to even try it, I dont think he would have still had a job after this got out!
The pilot made a good attempt to land, but did the right thing by going around.
He was coming in on the centreline, was doing well, but when he touched down the wing on the right had more lift because it was on the side with the wind....causing the plane to bank.
That is absolute B.S. I've flown in Boeing and Airbus aircraft, I'd say it depends more on the the pilot flying the aircraft, than the aircraft itself.
He /she was way outside the slope. At 100 ft call out I would have declared missed approach. X wind landing are just part of everyday flying..... and yes I fly a turbo prop twin.
