@bonetmax its because of the crankshaft. it uses the same type as what V8's typically use which is a crossplane style crankshaft. traditional sportsbikes use flatplane crankshaft layouts.
@TheDelianLeague They technically weren't really designed for the road though. While they are not purpose built race bikes they are very very track focused (90/10).........as are all current 600cc and 1000cc sport bikes. If you are looking for a road bike there are far better choices than a sportbike.
don't. there's better bikes for the same price as an R1. i've always liked the yamaha R6 and R1, but recently i realized that the R1 is one of the worst in its class (after seeing various reviews and comparisons). once summer starts i will replace my bike and i have it narrowed down to either the bmw s1000rr or the ducati 1198 (or 848 evo since the 1198 might cost a little more than my budget)
yeah 600cc is plenty. that's what i started on, but then again, i have an '07 zzr600 which is not really a high-end 600cc bike. therefore, i overdrove my bike and want an upgrade, something bigger and better
The great thing about 1000's is the power delivery is much more linear than 600s which tend to be more aggressive than thous. Power is in spades in any gear at any rpm
why do they keep mention'n mapping....standard, A mode B mode....isnt jus the height of the velocity stacks that change with the different modes? anyone?
@MrMOEYMOE...Sorry half my comment didn't come out. The different modes are different engine maps, they control everything from the amount of fuel each injecter injects, to ignition curve etc.
1:38 God women are stupid and don't know when too shut up. In some regards I hate the way muslims treat women, cos it's wrong but on the other hand don;t you just feel like punching a woman in the mouth? Is their brain even connected to their mouth or are they two seperate enities?
thats my bike, well ive got the same color/model. i got for free gold radiator protector, tank protector and rear stand lugs... cheers dandenong yamaha
Why did they NOT use ram air (cold air induction) for the new 09 R1...? All the other previous models have there power output recorded with ram air, however the new R1's power output is recorded without...? Any thoughts?
It does use ram air. The scoops are on the outer corners of the headlights. The airbox is pressurized under high speeds just like all the other ones just in a differet location.
Thanks mate but that didnt answer the question. Im asking, why did they not use cold air induction in order to retrieve power output (e.g. 182PS claimed by Yamaha for 09 R1), where all the previous models such as 06, 07, 08 etc... they did to retrieve the power output? Go to wikipedia and type in yamaha r1, then go to the bottom of page it states the model year comparison, all previous model r1's have got ram air next to their figure whereby the 09 doesnt.
i wonder how many of you actually have riden each bike or actually own a bike. hm? another note: cbr has a great riding postion, not overly aggressive as the gsxr's. the r1 is right in between.
Um, Didn't this new R1 like come last in present litrebike shootouts? It cant take on current cbr's or gsxr's still in a straight line. Anyways whatever turns you on.
fuck its ugly. Sounds meh. Its still getting raped by ducati twins. Hardly a big bang at all. when its a 2nd 3rd gen engine I might buy one. Not for 20 grand though. i'll buy one off the douches who buy then say "its too fast for me". Honestly. All litrebikes are out of touch for anyone to get the most out of.
A big bang firing order and a crossplane crankshaft are two different things. You need to do some research. The Yamahaa R1 has the crossplane crankshaft.....NOT a big bang engine!
rectaldickflop, I do not have an engineering degree so this is my best interpretation. The R1's sound is because the uneven firing order of the cross plane crankshaft. The traditional flat plane crankshaft used in most four cylinder sport bike fire two cylinders pretty much at the same time because of the 180 degree crank pin offset. The R1's cross plane crank has it's crank pins set at 90 degrees so each cylinder fires individually like in many V-8 engines. If I am wrong, someone correct me.
Wrong, there are never 2 cilinders that fire at once in a 4 pot engine, (unless it's a 2-stroke)
Lets say that cilinder 1 and 3 are at the same angle on the crank, this would mean that the if cilinder is in the 1st stroke (intake) then that means the third cilinder is in the 3th stroke (labour).... they will never be in the same stroke since then you would get a pulsating effect between accelaration and idle
AutoZine Technical School: "Flat-plane V8 is named according to the shape of the crankshaft, which is in a flat plane. It is very much like two inline-4 engines mated together. In particular, it achieves end-to-end balance because the first piston and last piston of a bank is exactly in the same position, so are the center two pistons. This is just the same as straight-four engines, therefore the sound of flat-plane V8 is usually somewhat like a pair of four-pot engines screaming simultaneously"
For a know it all you reading comprehension is quite limited. A) I did not post as an expert. B) "cylinders pretty much at the same time," you see "...pretty much..." implies that I am uncomfortable with what I had read on the topic. C) I invited correction. I like the constructive nature of your criticism. Especially the way you started with, "Wrong." Irregardless of the firing order two cylinders of the are in the same position at any given time. Your summation the vibration is correct though.
AutoZine Technical School: "As both banks run like an inline-4 engine, there is second-order vibration. For a 90° flat-plane V8, the sum of second-order force generated in the 2 banks is - by simple vector analysis - 1.41 times (root-2) of the force generated by each of the inline-4 it consists of. And the direction of vibration is left-right instead of top-down." But this is for a V-8 and I can find little for a inline four at this time. Thank you for your effort in this matter.
I think Yamaha is missing something with this bike...Why not give it a side mounted exhaust that we can replace with a Racefit or similar ...add the pointed seat unit like Rossi's bike...and suddenly you have a bit of more of a Moto GP Replica...seems a no brainer to me....come on Yamaha...just DO IT !
beautiful mechanics ..but they ruined the best looking bike on the road ...hideous just hideous ...again mechanically its beautiful...with the 1 3 2 4 sequence
if i get this bike (which i might get in the year 2011;coz im just 16 now!) my girl will get jealous im spending more time with the r1 instead of her!
r1's will be around for ever.... start with a 250 for a couple month then move to a 600... they can be just as quick as a 1k and they're a blast to ride. 1k's are for experienced riders or riders that have a deathwish (literally)
its not how the bike looks like, its the engine performance. now its basically like the new cars wer u can change from cruising to racing performance. and incase everyone doesnt knw this yet (im not an exoert on engines) but they said that the engine of the 09 R1 is the same engineering of the M1 GP. instead of standard FLATPLANE crankshaft, it now uses the CROSSPLANE crankshaft like the motoGP bike used. whew! a much balanced composet inertia
well, yes it indeed has the cross plane crankshaft, however yamaha tries to tell the audience that the crossplane crankshaft idea is completely new, unfortunately its xx years old. What all those new electronics, and technology however it may bring it to a whole new level.
well i dont want 2 put u on the spot but this is nothing like the M1 GP enigne, the crossplane crack is actually a way 2 put power to the ground better. its not to make more power, but everyone knows power sells bikes, so they make it sound like its a big power imprvment when it is not. and to shoairtube... dont get a 1k start with a 250 then after a few years and a lot of miles get a 1k, unless of course, your girlfriend likes the idea of a dead boyfriend.
looks good... needs modif tho..like exhaust and fairings... the tail looks dope... but i think they put too much electronic in bikes now... we ll need a computer to fix our bikes ourself... like for cars now... by the way good move with the res frame and arm spring... bad point for the aditional colors... colors are not agressiv enough... the should take exemple on nijas or cbr... wich they did a great color choice this year... R1 is the best tho... love my 2008
but what i saw it got a mapping selector switch where while u want tame engine respond but torque at lower rev then suddenly u wanted to race just push that damm buttons...
Men this F$#% engine sound like a V8. But here on Brazil this bike maybe don't come this year...Yea yea yea... all about the wolrd economics bang... I can't see when i get's mine once. hehehehe....
I own a Ducati 749R & Yamaha have pulled off a very clever move - this bike is going to sell shed loads in 2009. Boring bit : its wrong to describe it as a 'Big Bang' engine - without gettting completely anal, its more accurately a 'Long Bang' engine. Virgin Yamaha tried a Big Bang engine where they tried to emulate a V twin but they did not alter the crankshaft, as Yamaha have done with this new R1. This R1 is an awesome bike.
"1098 pile of wank" only to those who have to settle for Jap crap armchairs. And the faster one of these passes me the better, i wouldnt want to see it and vomit in my helmet coz it looks so damn ugly. Yamaha spent so much money making this bike look so bad they had to give it a bit more noice to wan people to cover their eyes. Why not buy one in a year from now and save, you will be sure to pick one up for less than 1/5th of the new cost
why sounds like V8 motor?

well i dont want 2 put u on the spot but this is nothing like the M1 GP enigne, the crossplane crack is actually a way 2 put power to the ground better. its not to make more power, but everyone knows power sells bikes, so they make it sound like its a big power imprvment when it is not. and to shoairtube... dont get a 1k start with a 250 then after a few years and a lot of miles get a 1k, unless of course, your girlfriend likes the idea of a dead boyfriend.

looks good... needs modif tho..like exhaust and fairings... the tail looks dope... but i think they put too much electronic in bikes now... we ll need a computer to fix our bikes ourself... like for cars now... by the way good move with the res frame and arm spring... bad point for the aditional colors... colors are not agressiv enough... the should take exemple on nijas or cbr... wich they did a great color choice this year... R1 is the best tho... love my 2008

Why not buy one in a year from now and save, you will be sure to pick one up for less than 1/5th of the new cost

why tell everyone that your 1098 is better on an R1 video?
go comment on a 1098 video.
or better yet go enjoy your bike and ride!

its NOT a batch fire engine. it fires every 90* vs every 180.

Its bound to be good, and very useable road and track.
But, from the looks of it, I'll stick to my ZX10R thanks.
Cant wait to meet one being used properly on a track to see how the two compare.

The 2009 is NOT A BIG BANG motor. I wish people would stop with the ignorance and figure this out.
